Chapter 188: Chapter 188: She’s More Fragrant Than a Roasted Potato
"Thank you for letting me come in and rest."
"You’re welcome." The old woman saw that she hadn’t eaten a single potato. "Aren’t you hungry?"
Faye Yardley hummed in agreement. "I’m not hungry right now."
"It’s getting late. You can sleep in the small room tonight. Remember, no matter what you hear during the night, don’t get curious and leave the room."
"Okay, I’ll remember that."
Faye then got up and followed Monty to a small room to the side. When she opened the door, she saw it was only big enough for a bed and a low cabinet that served as a nightstand. There were no windows in the room.
Monty lit a candle on the wall. "Alright, I won’t disturb you any longer. I’m going to bed too."
With that, she turned and walked to the room next door.
Faye watched her enter the bedroom and close the door before she stepped into the small room and closed her own door.
[Dungeon 2 Clear Condition 1: Survive for seven days and nights within the Dungeon.]
[Dungeon 2 Clear Condition 2: Help Monty find her son.]
[Dungeon 2 Clear Condition 3: Help the villagers break free from control.]
The sudden system prompt made Faye freeze for a moment. ’Break free from control?’
’They don’t show any signs of being controlled.’
’No, that’s not right. I haven’t had any direct contact with them at all.’
’Monty doesn’t seem to be controlled by anyone either.’
As for surviving here for seven days and nights, Faye felt that shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
The room was too small and had no windows. With the candle lit, Faye was genuinely afraid she might eventually die from lack of oxygen.
So she blew out the candle on the wall by the door and took out a Luminous Pearl.
The moment she blew out the candle, Monty in the next room turned in surprise to look at the wall that separated them. Originally, she...
’Forget it. As long as she stays in the room, nothing should happen.’
She lay down on the bed and even bound her own hands and feet with iron chains. ’Just endure it. Endure it, and it will all pass.’
Faye wasn’t actually sleepy. After all, she had only left the raft and entered the Dungeon this morning. Now, after half a day at most, she was being told it was dark and time to sleep.
Under the soft glow of the Luminous Pearl, Faye carefully examined the small room.
It wasn’t just that it lacked any coziness; it had no warmth at all. The cold, sterile room made one want to just lie down and wrap themselves tightly in a blanket.
Faye thought for a moment, then took out an Exorcism Talisman and stuck it to the back of the door. She then heard a blood-curdling scream, but she decided to follow Monty’s warning and not go out no matter what happened.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, she took a rice ball from her backpack and ate it in small bites. ’Strange. The rice ball tasted delicious outside the Dungeon, so why does it taste like chewing wax now?’
But even if the taste was hard to swallow for a moment, she knew her food was clean and hygienic, and wouldn’t cause any adverse reactions.
She had enough food in her backpack to last for seven days, as she also had various long-lasting pickles and flatbreads.
After finishing the rice ball, Faye took out a cup of milk tea and had a sip. As expected, the taste of the milk tea had also changed, becoming sour and bitter.
’Good heavens, this place really sucks all the joy out of everything.’
But this wasn’t a major problem. She closed her eyes and put the milk tea straight back into her backpack.
Leaving aside whether she could tolerate the taste, she was afraid she’d have to pee if she drank the whole cup. It was best not to create unexpected problems for herself when she couldn’t leave the room.
SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK~
THUMP THUMP THUMP~
AHHHH~
The sounds outside were rich and varied. Besides these noises, there was also a SHUFFLE... SHUFFLE... like the sound of someone injured, dragging their leg as they moved slowly.
Faye looked down at her watch. In just that short time, an hour had passed.
Ignoring the sounds outside, she lay down on the bed. She touched the ring on her left thumb, then clutched a small silver sword in her palm, which made her feel a little more at ease.
She placed a silver cross by her pillow, and with a tilt of her head, Faye fell straight asleep.
CREAK... CREAK... CLANG... CLANG... The noises outside were incessant, and the stone walls did nothing to block the sound.
But Faye, surprisingly, slept very soundly.
The ring emitted a faint red glow that enveloped her.
Next door, Monty had already transformed. But with her limbs bound by iron chains, she could only use her sharp teeth to gnaw at them. It was clear, however, that these were no ordinary chains; they couldn’t be easily bitten through.
"Son, is everything alright over at Monty’s?"
"Dad, everything was fine when I went to check."
"Come warm yourself by the fire. We don’t need to worry about the outsider."
The little boy looked up with a smile. "Mom, Dad’s worried the outsider will make Monty stronger."
"She won’t. Anyone who dares to travel alone isn’t weak. Come eat a roasted potato."
"Mom, that lady smells so good, much better than roasted potatoes."
The man’s face immediately darkened. The woman quickly stuffed a roasted potato into the little boy’s hands. "Eat up. Nothing smells better than a potato."
The little boy glanced at his father, then quickly lowered his head, blew on the potato, and started eating.
The man sighed. "How much longer?"
The woman smiled. "Soon, very soon. After one more payment the day after tomorrow, we’ll have paid enough. We can take our child into the city then."
"We have to make the outsider leave tomorrow."
"Mm. But that also depends on what Monty wants."
Similar conversations were happening in other houses, but the general consensus was to make the outsider leave—if she was still alive tomorrow.
Some people even left their homes to pace around Monty’s house, waiting to get a piece of the pie.
But after waiting in vain all night, nothing happened. This disappointed them, but it also kindled a different kind of hope.
And so, the restless night passed.
On the second day in the Dungeon, the sky remained dark and gloomy, as if sunlight never shone directly upon this land.
Faye woke up after just two hours of sleep. She had no choice. The flow had suddenly gotten heavier, and she felt like she was about to leak.
She heard a knock on the door, followed by Monty’s voice. "Young lady, it’s morning. Time to get up."
"Okay, Monty."
She first put away the cross, then carefully got out of bed, put on her black cloak, and adjusted her mask. Then, she carefully peeled the Exorcism Talisman off the door and put it back in her backpack.
She opened the door. "Monty, excuse me, I need to use the restroom first."
"Mm. It’s best to burn what you change out of."
"Ah? Oh, okay."
’Perhaps the local custom is to consider a woman’s menstrual blood as filth, as something unclean?’
Fortunately, even if Monty didn’t provide a fire, Faye had a torch and a Fire Pit in her backpack. The convenience of carrying more things after her backpack was expanded was undeniable.
Although it was a bit of a hassle, Faye took care of everything. When she returned to the main room, feeling fresh and clean, Monty was still friendly and even praised her for doing a good job.
