Chapter 212: Victoria Morvain Is Her Aunt
They also remember the three encounters they have had with her. What she’d said the last time she came to their house twelve years ago.
Sebastian closed his eyes for exactly one second.
Victoria Morvaine. The most powerful witch of the last century. Disappeared twelve years ago without explanation. Last confirmed sighting.....a small house on the outskirts of Shadowmere Pack territory.
Lilith would have been seven or eight years old.
Then Lucian said.... "She was never wolfless."
"No," Nicholas said.
"Her power was suppressed."
"Deliberately. Carefully. From the time she was a child."
Lucian turned away, put both hands flat on the mantelpiece and stood there with his head down and his shoulders tight and said nothing for a long moment. Zev was right there at the surface. Nicholas could feel it from across the room.
Sebastian hadn’t moved from the window.
"Victoria is her aunt," he said. "Her mother’s sister."
"Yes."
"And Lilith’s mother is a Morvaine."
"Yes."
The full shape of it settling over the room. A woman who had just lost her father. Who had grown up believing she was broken. Who had been sent to them as payment to pay off the blood debt they had accused her father of, a woman who is carrying the most powerful witch bloodline in existence inside her body and had never been told.
Lucian lifted his head from the mantelpiece.
He turned.
Looked at Nicholas directly.
"We were there," he said. "When he died."
The room went very quiet.
Nicholas held his brother’s gaze.
"Yes," he said. "We were."
That was all that needed to be said. All three of them knew what the official report had called treason, they know what the record had called betrayal. All three of them knew what it actually was. What they had ordered.
Lucian looked at the floor.
"She doesn’t know," he said.
"No."
"But Victoria does."
"Victoria knows everything," Nicholas said. "That’s been made very clear to us on multiple occasions, and i am sure she knows about what happened during the alliance meeting also"
Sebastian turned from the window.
"So when she comes...." He stopped. Started again. "She’s not just coming because Kael marked her niece without consent." He paused. "She’s coming because the men who marked her niece are the same men who killed her sister’s husband."
Lucian sat down heavily on the edge of the chair.
For a moment none of them spoke.
Then Sebastian said....quietly, more to himself than either of them.
"How much of this does Lilith already feel."
Nobody answered that either.
Because the answer was....they didn’t know. The mark was fresh. The bond was new and raw and neither of them had any idea what she was picking up through it or what her body was starting to understand even if her mind hadn’t caught up yet.
"We have to tell her," he said.
"No," Nicholas said.
Lucian turned.
"Nicholas...."
"Not yet." Nicholas set the records down on the table. "Think about what you’re saying. She is going to wake up very soon. She is going to see that she has a mark on her throat she didn’t choose. Her power surged hard enough to crack stone and shatter windows and she doesn’t understand why. Her father just died five months ago, her mother is in the hospital." He looked at his brother. "You want to tell her on top of all of that that her entire life was a lie."
Lucian’s jaw tightened.
"She deserves to know...."
"She will know. But not today."
"Then when?"
Nicholas looked at Sebastian.
Sebastian was already looking at him.
They’d been brothers for twenty six years. There were conversations that happened without words. This was one of them.
"When all three of us have marked her," Sebastian said quietly.
Lucian looked at him.
"Think about it," Sebastian said. "Victoria felt that surge. Whatever corner of the world she’s been hiding in for twelve years.....she felt it. The Morvaine bloodline breaking free after years of suppression." He paused. "And i am sure that she’s already moving."
The room was quiet.
"If Victoria gets here before the triple bond is complete," Nicholas said, "she can try to take Lilith. She’s powerful enough to attempt it."
"And if she pulls her from an incomplete bond...." Sebastian didn’t finish.
He didn’t need to.
They all knew what an incomplete forced separation could do to a newly marked mate. Especially one whose power had just cracked open. Especially one whose body was still adjusting to everything that had happened in the last twenty four hours.
It could kill her.
Lucian stood there.
His face showing multiple emotions all at once. The part of him that was Zev pulling toward Lilith the way it had been pulling since the moment she was sent to them as payment. The part of him that was Lucian.....who had watched her cry in that bed this morning, didn’t want to keep anything from her.
"Two months," he said finally. Quietly.
"Yes," Nicholas said.
Two months until the three months timeline. Two months until the curse became permanent and irreversible and everything they were now was everything they would be forever.
They had found their mate.
They were not losing her.
Not to Victoria. Not to the curse. Not to anything.
"We move fast," Nicholas said. "We keep her close. We give her time to understand what she is" He looked at both of them. "And we make sure that when Victoria arrives there is nothing she can do."
Sebastian nodded once.
Lucian looked at the floor for a long moment.
Then he nodded too.
"She won’t forgive us," he said. "When she finds out we knew and said nothing."
"I know," Nicholas said.
"She’ll be furious."
"I know that too."
Lucian looked at him.
"You’re prepared for that."
Nicholas thought about Lilith’s face. The mark on her throat. The crack in the floor. Her hands lying open and still with all that gold underneath them that she didn’t know was there.
"Yes," he said.
He picked up the records.
"I’m going to her now," he said.
His brothers looked at him.
"Not to tell her," he said. "Just to.....be there."
Neither of them said anything.
They understood what he was saying.
Nicholas looked at his brothers one last time, then he walked out of the room.
