Chapter 207: Her Hands Glowed
Gold and faint and gone in less than a second.
Nicholas stopped moving, he went completely still above her. His eyes dropped to her hands. And his breathing stopped.
The glow was gone.
Then he started moving again and said nothing. But his eyes.... silver and sharp and already somewhere else entirely....did not forget what they had just seen.

Dawn came through the curtains slow and grey.
The heat finally dropped to something close to manageable.
Not broken entirely but low enough that she could think in straight now. Low enough that her body stopped screaming and started aching....bone-deep and satisfying and entirely worth it.
She lay between them completely wrecked.
Every part of her body used and marked and satisfied in a way that went all the way down. She should sleep. She knew she should sleep. But something was keeping her at the surface of sleep.
She looked at her hands.
Normal. Nothing there. Pale and unremarkable in the grey morning light.
She was certain of what she’d felt, but also less certain of what it meant.
"Nicholas," she said quietly.
"Sleep," he said.
She turned her head to look at him and found out he was already looking at her.
That expression. The one she’d learned to read over weeks in this estate....the one that meant he knew something and was deciding what to do. What to say and what to keep to himself.
"Sleep, Lilith," he said again.
She held his gaze for one more moment.
Then she closed her eyes.
She fell asleep within minutes because she was too tired to keep her eyes opened.

Nicholas’s POV
He waited until her breathing evened out.
It took a while. She was fighting it....he could tell by the slight tension still in her shoulders, the way her fingers didn’t fully relax. She knew something had happened or maybe she had suspected.
Eventually her breathing slowed.
He didn’t move.
Lucian was out on her left side. Sebastian at the foot of the bed with one hand resting on her ankle, his eyes closed. Both of them down. Both of them looking exhausted.
But he didn’t feel tired at all.
He stared at the ceiling.
Gold.
Faint. A second, maybe less. Her hands where they’d gripped his arms....that warm, deep gold that had moved under her skin, like something pushing up from below.
Not bioluminescence. Not a trick of the dawn light. He knew what he’d seen.
He’d seen it before.
Once. A long time ago. In a text his father had kept locked in the east library and thought none of his sons had read.
He turned his head and looked at her face.
She looked younger when she slept. The stubborn set of her jaw released. All that sharpness she walked around with....the wariness, the defiance, the constant low-level watching....gone. she look peaceful and her self....
"Wolfless."
That’s what they’d all believed. What the records said. What she believed about herself.
Kael shifted in his chest then he settled. The wall still cracked and tender from the night...three wolves hitting it simultaneously had done something to the binding that Nicholas hadn’t anticipated. The fracture was real. He’d felt it happen.
He’d also felt her power move.
She hadn’t. Or she hadn’t understood it. She’d looked at her hands afterward and seen nothing and the confusion on her face had been genuine.
She didn’t know.
Whatever was inside her....whatever had been buried, suppressed, tied down so long it had calcified....she didn’t know it was there.
But her body did.
And now, apparently, so did his.
He looked at her hands resting on the sheet between them. Small. Still. Nothing gold. Nothing glowing. Just her hands.
He thought about Dr Aldric’s voice in the corridor. She’s been managing this alone for days. Running a heat she didn’t understand.
A wolfless woman didn’t go into heat.
A wolfless woman’s hands didn’t glow gold when a centuries-old binding cracked open either.
Nicholas was very good at not drawing conclusions before he had enough information. It was something his father had taught him. Something the curse had reinforced. Patience was the only thing that had kept them functional for years.
But he was beginning to form one now.
He turned back to the ceiling.
Kael was quiet. Watching. Present in a way that felt less like pressure and more like attention ...like even the wolf understood that this particular moment required stillness.
Less than three months left on the curse.
Less than three months before all of it became irreversible.
He looked at her one more time.
Then he closed his eyes.
He didn’t sleep that night.
But he stayed very still and let her rest and turned what he’d seen over and over in the quiet of the early morning until the grey light through the curtains went pale gold.
And then he felt Kael pushing again, and this time around he was wasn’t pushing at the wall, He was pushing to take control over his body.

Lilith’s POV
The heat came back at dawn.
She felt it before she was fully awake. That same pull. That same burn. But different this time, it felt...heavier. Like it knew something she didn’t.
She turned toward Nicholas.
He was already awake. Lying on his side and was watching her. His silver eyes were steady. That particular stillness that was so specifically him...controlled, deliberate, always three steps ahead of whatever room he was in.
She opened her mouth to greet him good morning and then his eyes changed.
Between one blink and the next.
Silver.....and then it was gone.
Something gold looked out through his face. Ancient and completely feral and nothing behind it that recognized patience or restraint or her name or anything she had learned about him in all the weeks she had spent in this estate. His whole body shifted. The stillness changed. Not Nicholas’s stillness. Something that held itself differently. Moved differently. Had exactly one priority and had already decided everything else was irrelevant.
She went cold.
That was not Nicholas.
