Chapter 187: How Long Until She Wakes Up?
Doctor Hensley checked in again that afternoon, and her expression was pleased.
"Your mother’s brain activity continues to be strong," she said. "I’m very encouraged by her progress. The crisis event seems to have passed completely. We’ll continue monitoring her, but I see no reason why she shouldn’t continue improving at her current rate."
"How long until she wakes up?" Lilith asked, the question she’d been afraid to ask since arriving.
Hensley was honest in her response: "We can’t know that. Sometimes comas last weeks. Sometimes months. Sometimes much longer. But your mother’s body is healing. That’s what matters right now."

That evening, Lilith found herself talking about the future in a way she hadn’t before.
"I think I’m going to stay at Blackwood," she said to her mother’s still face. "I know that’s not what I expected to say. I know you probably expected me to be counting down the days until I could get away from them. But something’s changed, Mama. And I’m beginning to think that maybe... maybe I’m not supposed to run. Maybe I’m supposed to stay."
She held her mother’s hand, pressing her thumb gently against the paper-thin skin of her mother’s palm.
"I don’t know if it’s love yet. I don’t know if what I’m feeling is genuine choice or just the mate bond making me feel like I’m choosing. But I know that when I think about leaving, about going back to Shadowmere, about never seeing them again....my heart breaks a little. And I think that means something. I think that means this is real, even if I don’t fully understand it yet."

The light was fading outside the window when Lilith finally acknowledged to herself what she’d known all morning: she’d been at the hospital for two full days. She’d fulfilled her promise to her mother. And now it was time to go back.
She stayed with her mother through the evening, talking less now, just sitting together in the quiet space of the hospital room.
When the final visiting hours ended, Lilith rose slowly, gathering her bag, preparing herself for the drive back to Blackwood Estate.
"I have to go now, Mama," she said, bending to kiss her mother’s forehead one last time. "But I’m coming back. I promise you that. And I’m going to keep talking to you. And I’m going to keep telling you about my life, because I think somewhere inside you’re listening."
She straightened up, looking down at her mother’s peaceful face.
"I’m going to build a life at Blackwood," she said quietly, as if saying it out loud made it more real. "I’m going to figure out what it means to be a mate to the brothers, and I’m going to do it all while making sure you know you’re not alone. That I’m not abandoning you. That you matter to me more than anything else ever will."
She stood there for another moment, then she turned and walked out of the room.

Marcus was waiting at the hospital entrance when Lilith emerged, her small bag in hand. He took it without comment and helped her into the carriage with the same quiet professionalism he’d shown on the drive to Saint Mary’s two days ago.
The journey back felt different this time. Lilith sat in the passenger seat and watched the landscape shift from neutral territory back into Blackwood’s carefully maintained grounds, but her mind wasn’t fully present for the drive. She was calmer now, more settled, her thoughts no longer spiraling with worry about her mother’s condition. Doctor Hensley’s assurances had anchored something in her. her mother was stable, and she had done what she came to do.
The drive took the same hours it had taken before, but this time the hours felt productive rather than anxious. Lilith found herself thinking about the brothers.
By the time Blackwood estate came into view, it was almost midnight. Marcus pulled the car to a smooth stop near the main entrance.
"Welcome home," he said quietly, helping her down.
Lilith made her way inside, and the estate immediately felt different. Or perhaps she was different, and the difference made everything else feel like it had shifted. The corridors were familiar now, the layout no longer confusing. She moved toward the common areas without having to stop and think about direction, her feet carrying her toward wherever the brothers might be.

She found Sebastian in one of the sitting rooms near the library, a book open on his lap though his dark eyes were fixed on the window when she appeared in the doorway. The moment he saw her, his expression transformed.
"Lilith," he said, and the way he said her name was different. Softer. More real. "You’re back."
"I’m back," she confirmed, standing in the doorway uncertain.
"Come sit," he said, patting the space beside him on the sofa. "Tell me about your mother."
She moved toward him, and her exhaustion made the walking clumsy, She settled beside him on the sofa, maintaining a small distance between them that felt safe, and Sebastian respected that distance without comment.
"She’s stable," Lilith said. "Doctor Hensley said her brain activity is good. She’s healing."
"That’s good news," Sebastian said, and the sincerity in his voice was unmistakable. "How are you?"
"Tired," she admitted. "But okay. I spent most of the time sitting with her, talking to her. It was good to be there."
"I’m glad," Sebastian said, and then he smiled...a real smile, warm and unguarded in a way she hadn’t quite seen from him before. "I’m glad you’re back."
Before she could respond, Lucian appeared in the doorway, and his entire body seemed to relax the moment he saw her. His gold eyes brightened, the feral edge that always defined him softening into something almost tender.
"You came back," he said, moving into the room. He didn’t rush toward her like she might have expected. Instead, he simply settled into a chair across from them, his gaze never leaving her face. "How’s your mother?"
