Chapter 184: Go And Stay With Your Mother For Two Days
She wanted to ask him to stay. The thought floated up through the fog of exhaustion, but sleep pulled her under before she could shape it into words.
Lucian stood over her for a moment longer, watching her breathing even out, watching her finally, fully surrender to rest. Then he made himself turn and leave, closing the door behind him with more care than the moment probably required.
In the corridor, his jaw was clenched so tight it ached. He walked back toward his own room on legs that didn’t feel entirely steady, using every last thread of control he had not to turn back, not to open that door again, not to give his wolf what it wanted.
By the time he reached his room, he was shaking.

*The Next Morning*
Lilith was still asleep when Sera knocked on her door the next morning
The knock was soft, apologetic, the kind of sound someone made when they didn’t want to wake you but had to. Lilith stirred slowly, pulling herself up through layers of exhaustion, her mind not quite present yet. The sun was already high, which means she’d slept longer than she realized.
"Come in," she called, her voice rough from sleep.
Sera appeared in the doorway, already dressed in her warrior’s gear, her face carrying something that looked like worry carefully smoothed into neutrality. "The Alphas want to see you in Alpha Nicholas’s office," she said gently. "When you’re ready."
Lilith nodded, not yet fully awake enough to question why all three of them wanted to see her so urgently. She dressed quickly and made her way through the corridors, her mind still half-caught in the fog of yesterday’s emotional exhaustion.
Nicholas, Sebastian, and Lucian were already in the office when she arrived. She noticed immediately that something was different about them. There was a tension in all three of them, visible in the tight set of their shoulders, in the way they held themselves with the kind of careful control that came from actively containing something. The air of the office felt charged, like the moment before a storm broke.
Lucian looked the worst of the three. His gold eyes were bright, almost luminescent, and his jaw was clenched so tightly she could see the muscle jumping beneath the skin. He stood near the window, slightly apart from his brothers, as if creating distance between them was necessary.
"Lilith," Nicholas said, and his voice carried that same measured calm it always did. "We need to discuss today’s arrangements."
She waited, trying to read their expressions.
"Your mother," Sebastian said, his voice slightly rougher than usual, "needs you with her. She’s still fragile from the episode, and she’ll heal better with you present."
"We think you should stay at the hospital," Nicholas continued. "For at least two days. Maybe longer, depending on her condition. We want you to focus entirely on being with her. On helping her heal. Not thinking about anything else."
Lilith’s first instinct was to question why they were suddenly pushing her away, why they wanted her gone for two full days when they’d been so focused on her presence, on her adjustment to the estate. But even as the questions formed, she thought about her mother lying still in that hospital bed, about the crisis event Doctor Hensley had warned might happen again, about the fact that her mother needed her in a way these brothers, powerful, ancient, capable of taking care of themselves, simply did not.
The thought of staying at the hospital, of sleeping in a chair beside her mother’s bed, of being fully present for her mother without the pull of obligations at Blackwood dividing her attention...it overrode every other concern.
"Okay," she said simply. "I’ll stay with her."
"Good," Sebastian said, and something in his face relaxed fractionally at her acceptance. "Marcus will take you back now. We’ve already arranged for you to have a room at the hospital so you can rest properly between visiting hours."
"How long will I be gone?" Lilith asked, though the question felt oddly distant, like it belonged to someone else.
"Two days," Nicholas said. "Perhaps three if her condition requires it. We’ll send word if the timeline changes."
Lucian didn’t speak. He simply stood by the window, his gold eyes tracking her movement as she nodded her understanding, as she turned to leave. There was something in that gaze that made her pause for just a moment, some depth of emotion that he wasn’t articulating in words.
"Be safe," he said finally, the two words carrying weight that went far beyond their surface meaning.
"I will," Lilith promised, though she wasn’t entirely sure what she was promising to be safe from.

Marcus was waiting with the car already prepared. The drive to Saint Mary’s felt shorter this time, or perhaps Lilith was simply too lost in her own thoughts to fully notice the passage of time.
The hospital accepted her into one of the staff rooms on the fourth floor...a small, simple space with a narrow bed and a window that overlooked the gardens. She dropped her bag and immediately made her way to her mother’s room.
Her mother was exactly as she’d been yesterday...still, silent, peaceful in that way that meant absent. Lilith pulled the chair close and settled in, taking her mother’s hand, beginning the vigil that would occupy the next two days of her life.

In Nicholas’s office at Blackwood, the moment the carriage crossed through the gates and disappeared down the main road, something shifted in the room’s atmosphere.
Lucian’s control cracked first. His head tilted back, his gold eyes closing briefly, and when he opened them again, there was barely any human left in them at all. A low growl rumbled in his chest...not aggressive, but raw, uncontrolled, the sound of something trying desperately not to break through entirely.
Sebastian moved immediately to the side table and poured a glass of whiskey with hands that weren’t quite steady.
