Chapter 168: She Broke The Last Time We Pushed Too Hard

"It’s true," Sebastian confirmed, his voice quieter but no less intense. "Same thing is happening to me. Rhen is restless. I couldn’t focus on anything all afternoon. The hunger..." He trailed off, his jaw clenching. "The hunger is going to be unbearable by the time the full moon arrives."

Nicholas said nothing, but his fingers tapped slowly against the wooden arm of his chair, a sign that only his brothers would recognize as him thinking, processing, running calculations.

"So the question becomes," Sebastian continued, moving to lean against the edge of Nicholas’s desk, "how do we not go to her like feral beasts and take what we need? How do we not mark her before she’s even had time to adjust to being here, before she’s had time to understand what any of this means?"

"We mark her now," Lucian said, his voice hard. "We complete the bond, settle the curse, and stop dancing around what she is to us."

"She broke the last time we pushed too hard," Sebastian said flatly, and his voice carried enough weight that Lucian immediately went silent. "She was empty. Gone. It took Agnes holding vigil over her just to make sure she didn’t disappear entirely." He looked directly at his youngest brother. "I won’t do that again."

"Neither will I," Nicholas said quietly.

The words hung in the air between them.

Lucian turned away, his hands clenching into fists at his sides. "So what do you propose? We wait? We pretend we can control this for eight more days, four weeks more if we’re going to be truly patient?" His gold eyes flashed back toward Nicholas, and there was real anguish in them beneath the fury. "Nicholas, I don’t know if I can survive that."

"Then we do this carefully," Nicholas said, his voice settling into the tone of strategic planning. "We observe her for the next three to four days. We watch her responses, her comfort level, her readiness. We determine if she’s actually prepared for the bond or if she’s simply resigned to it."

"And if she is ready?" Sebastian asked.

"Then we mark her before the full moon becomes unmanageable," Nicholas said. "Before the curse makes us lose control completely. But we do it with her understanding, with her consent, with her knowing exactly what she’s agreeing to."

"And if she’s not ready by day four?" This from Lucian, his voice carrying both hope and dread.

"Then we manage the full moon the way we managed it before we found her," Nicholas said, and his tone suggested this was non-negotiable. "Separation. Control. The curse is brutal, but we’ve survived it before."

Sebastian pushed off from the desk, his expression darkening. "But what if we can’t hold back? What if the curse wins before day four? What if one of us loses control around her?"

"We won’t," Nicholas said simply.

"You can’t guarantee that," Sebastian said, his voice rising slightly. "We’re not dealing with normal alpha hunger here. We’re dealing with a curse that’s been building pressure for years. We’re dealing with a mate bond that’s pulling at all three of us simultaneously. You can’t just will that away through sheer force."

"Watch me," Nicholas replied, his silver eyes hardening into something that made even Sebastian take a small step back. "For four days, we observe. We watch how she settles into the estate, how she interacts with the pack, how she responds when we’re near her. After four days, we make a final decision."

Lucian dropped his face into his hands, a gesture of exhaustion so complete it made both his brothers pause. When he spoke again, his voice came muffled through his palms. "I think you’re right."

Nicholas and Sebastian exchanged a glance.

Lucian looked up, his gold eyes still burning but with something different beneath the fire now, something like realization, like clarity cutting. "We took so much from her already," he said quietly. "When she was here before, we didn’t even get to know her. She doesn’t know anything about us except what we forced on her. We don’t know her, not really. And she doesn’t know us." He paused, swallowing hard. "Maybe we should use the time between now and the next full moon to actually become the mates she deserves instead of just... taking her."

"A month," Sebastian said, testing the words. "You’re saying we should wait a full month?"

"I’m saying we should give ourselves and her the chance to build something real," Lucian said, and there was something raw in his voice now, something that suggested this realization had cost him everything. "The full moon in eight days is going to be brutal. But maybe..." He looked toward Nicholas. "Maybe we can survive it differently if we know her. If she knows us."

Nicholas was quiet for a long moment, his fingers resuming their slow tap against the chair arm. The sound filled the office...steady, rhythmic, thoughtful.

"Four days," he said again. "We observe her for four days and make our decision then. If she seems ready, we mark her before the full moon hits its worst. If she’s not ready..." He paused. "Then we do what Lucian suggests. We wait. We build. We become something worth waiting for."

"But how do we survive the full moon in eight days?" Sebastian asked, and there was genuine concern in his voice now, concern not for themselves but for Lilith, for what their loss of control might mean for her.

"We’ll manage," Nicholas said. "The same way we’ve always managed. We’ll separate if necessary. We’ll control it through discipline and will." He looked directly at his brothers. "Lilith doesn’t go anywhere near any of us during the full moon until we’ve completed the bond. That’s non-negotiable."

"And if the curse gets worse before day four?" Lucian pressed.

"Then we accelerate the timeline," Nicholas said. "Because i have changed my mind, We don’t touch her without certainty that she’s ready. We’ve already broken her once. I will not be responsible for doing it again."
