Chapter 142: You Are Our Mate, Lilith

Finn’s knock came at her door just as the afternoon light shifted golden through the narrow window. Lilith was sitting on the edge of her bed, staring at nothing, when the sound pulled her back to the present. Her heart jumped before she could stop it.

"Come in," she called, her voice steadier than she felt.

Finn opened the door, his professional demeanor intact, his expression revealing nothing of what was about to happen. He was tall, broad-shouldered, with the easy confidence of someone who’d spent years serving an alpha. His dark eyes met hers with respect, but there was something else there too—something that felt like gravity.

"Alpha Nicholas requests your presence in his room," Finn said. The formality of it was suffocating. The inevitability of it was worse.

Lilith’s stomach dropped. She stood on legs that felt uncertain, smoothing her hands down her dress out of habit rather than necessity. "Now?" she asked, though she already knew the answer.

"Now," Finn confirmed.

The walk through the Blackwood quarters felt longer than it should have. Every corridor was lined with polished wood and soft lighting, the luxury of it almost mocking her. Her mind spun with questions she couldn’t answer. Why was Nicholas summoning her now? What did he want? The pull—that inexplicable, constant pull that had been driving her insane since the brothers arrived—grew stronger with each step. By the time they reached his door, her heart was racing. Her hands trembled slightly at her sides.

Finn knocked once, a sharp sound that echoed down the hallway. From inside, Nicholas’s voice was immediate: "Enter."

The door opened. Lilith stepped inside.

All three brothers were present, and the sight of them hit her like a physical force. Nicholas sat in a high-backed chair near the window, his silver eyes already locked on her. He didn’t move. Sebastian stood near the far wall, his dark eyes tracking her every step with an intensity that made her breath catch. Lucian sprawled on the sofa, his gold eyes gleaming with something feral, something hungry, something that made her instinctively want to run.

The tension in the room was suffocating. She could feel the weight of whatever was about to happen pressing down on her chest, making it hard to breathe. The door closed softly behind her. She was alone with them now.

"Lilith," Nicholas said, his voice calm and controlled. "We have something important to talk to you about."

She tried to sound steady, but her voice wavered. "What is it, Alpha?"

She stood in the center of the room, trapped by their presence. There was nowhere to go. Nowhere to hide. Just three alphas and whatever truth they were about to deliver.

Sebastian stood from where he’d been leaning against the wall. He moved toward her with deliberate slowness, each step measured and purposeful. His dark eyes never left hers. When he reached her, he raised his hand slowly. His palm was warm against her chin as he cupped her face gently, tilting her head up to meet his gaze.

His touch was warm. Possessive. Certain in a way that made her entire body respond without permission.

"I don’t want you to be too surprised, Lilith," he said softly, and his voice carried weight beneath the gentleness. "But you are our mate."

The words hung in the air between them. Simple. Absolute. Life-altering.

Her eyes widened in horror. She pulled back from him as if his hands were burning her, as if his touch had suddenly become dangerous. "What? What are you saying? I don’t understand," she whispered. Her voice was small, frightened, confused.

"You are our mate, Lilith," Sebastian said again, moving closer. His voice remained gentle, but there was no room for argument in it. Undeniable. Certain. Not unkind, but absolute.

She shook her head, backing away from him. "No. No. That’s not possible." Her voice was desperate now, the words tumbling out. "That’s not possible. I am not your mate. No. I am not your mate. I can’t be your mate."

The denial was fierce. It was absolute. It was terrified.

Sebastian looked back at his brothers. Their expressions confirmed what he was about to say. "We found out during the contract," he said quietly. "The first few days."

Lilith’s breath caught. The pieces clicked into place in her mind like dominoes falling. The early release. Sixteen days instead of thirty. The intensity of their attention. The constant seduction. The way they’d been watching her, always watching her, since the moment they arrived at Shadowmere.

"Was that why you allowed me to go early?" Her voice was shaking. "Was that why the contract ended early? Was that why I spent just sixteen days instead of thirty days?" She looked between all three of them. "Because you found out I was your mate?"

"Yes," Sebastian confirmed, nodding. "That was why we allowed you to leave early. We couldn’t keep you there knowing what you were to us."

A sharp, slightly hysterical laugh burst from her throat. She shook her head, unable to process the enormity of it. She looked at all three brothers. "Does that explain the involuntary pull I’ve been feeling towards the three of you since you got here? That constant pull?" The laughter continued, but there was no humor in it. "That constant feeling that I was losing my mind?"

"Yes," Lucian said from the sofa.

She turned to face him. "But I am wolfless." Her voice became harder, more defiant. The shock was wearing off, replaced by something sharper. "I cannot be your mate. I don’t have a wolf. I didn’t shift when I was eighteen. They all call me a freak. I have been living without my wolf for years. I’ve been living with the shame of it, the stigma of it." She looked between all three of them, her voice rising. "How do you expect me to believe you when you’re telling me that I...a wolfless girl, am made for the most powerful alphas in the werewolf realm? How does that even make sense?"

Her voice cracked on the last word. "Are you trying to play with my emotions?"

Nicholas stood from his chair with deliberate grace. His movement was commanding, authoritative, the kind of movement that made the air itself seem to shift. He walked toward her, and when he reached her, his presence seemed to fill the entire room, pushing everything else into shadow.

"What Sebastian said is true," Nicholas said, his voice absolute. He looked directly into her eyes, and there was no wavering in his gaze, no doubt, no hesitation. Just pure, absolute certainty. "You are our mate."
