Chapter 225: Chapter 225: A Call From Xia Zhengguang
Yun Zijin was a little surprised that Lu Yunque had agreed with so little hesitation.
However, Lu Yunque always took his promises seriously. Barring circumstances truly beyond his control, he never went back on his word.
"I’ll be holding you to that, then. When the time comes, I’ll bring the garlic to you myself."
Lu Yunque chuckled. "I never forget the things I promise you."
Yun Zijin huffed. "You should get back to your meal. I won’t keep you. Bye!"
Lu Yunque didn’t really want to hang up, but it was indeed time for him to eat. "Bye."
After hanging up, Yun Zijin put her phone away and closed her eyes to rest.
The car had just pulled up to Xingyu Mansion when Yun Zijin’s phone rang again.
The caller ID showed an unknown number, but its area code was from the Imperial City.
Yun Zijin habitually rejected calls from unknown numbers.
But after she declined it, a second call came through from the same number.
Yun Zijin pursed her lips and answered the phone as she got out of the car.
"Hello!"
"Zijin, it’s Dad."
’Dad? What a niche term.’
He hadn’t introduced himself, but Yun Zijin knew that no one other than Xia Zhengguang would call her and refer to himself as "Dad."
"What is it?"
The Xia Family members had gotten smarter. They knew Yun Zijin had blocked all their numbers, so they always borrowed other people’s phones to call her.
She wouldn’t pick up the first call, which was normal. But when they called a second time, Yun Zijin would assume it was someone who genuinely needed to reach her and answer.
As much as she hated to admit it, this tactic worked every time.
"It’s the National Day holiday, isn’t it? Everyone is off from work and has come home. I was thinking that since you’re my daughter, I can’t let you spend the holiday all by yourself."
"Are you free tomorrow? How about we have a family dinner?"
"We’re all family. I’ve already spoken with Jiao Jiao, and she absolutely won’t cause any trouble for you at dinner tomorrow."
"And your mother, she knows she was wrong. She told me she regrets how poorly she treated you before and just wants to make it up to you now."
"Not knowing you existed for all these years, letting you suffer so much out there... it’s all Dad’s fault. Come home for dinner tomorrow, and Dad will personally apologize."
Xia Zhengguang said all this in a single breath. Yun Zijin remained silent, wanting to hear him out and figure out his true motive.
’But... asking me to go to the Xia family home for dinner? Is Xia Zhengguang out of his mind?’
"Oh, I’m not free tomorrow."
Yun Zijin didn’t believe for a second that Xia Zhengguang had genuinely come to his senses and wanted to make amends.
If he’d wanted to make amends, he would have done so the day they found her, not waited several months to call and spout a bunch of sentimental drivel.
Besides, the Xia Family’s business was in real trouble lately. If no one took that plot of land in the South Suburb, there was no telling how long they could stay afloat.
"That’s all right, the day after tomorrow is fine too. Dad is the one who has wronged you. If you’re busy, Dad will work around your schedule. Just let Dad know whenever you’re free."
Every time she heard Xia Zhengguang call himself "Dad," Yun Zijin felt her skin crawl.
"You can stop calling yourself ’Dad.’ I’ve never had a father."
"I don’t know what you’re plotting with this sudden phone call, but... I’d advise you to drop your little scheme."
Yun Zijin figured it was probably only because of their blood ties that she was being this tolerant toward the Xia family.
"You... Dad knows you’re angry about how well we treat Jiao Jiao. But don’t you worry, I’ve already talked it over with her. She’s an adult now, so I’m going to have her move out."
"But since Jiao Jiao is still in school, I’ll continue to provide her with a monthly allowance."
"But don’t worry, no matter how much she gets, it won’t surpass what you get."
"Whatever I give Jiao Jiao, Dad will give you double!"
"Oh? And how much would double the allowance be?"
Yun Zijin raised an eyebrow, her tone casual.
"Jiao Jiao’s monthly allowance is five... five hundred thousand, so Dad will give you one million!"
’Five hundred thousand? Who is he trying to fool? Xia Jiajiao would blow through that on just two handbags, to say nothing of all her luxury clothes, shoes, and jewelry.’
’Five hundred thousand probably didn’t even cover the pocket change of Xia Jiajiao’s real allowance.’
"Mr. Xia, do you think I’m bad at math, or just an idiot?"
"Considering Xia Jiajiao’s spending habits, you claim her monthly allowance is five hundred thousand? Not even a dog would believe that."
"And a million a month for an allowance? I spent over five million just this afternoon shopping. With a million, are you expecting me to live on air?"
She had spent two million at Hermes alone, and with her other purchases, the total came out to at least eight million, if not ten.
To be honest, a million a month in pocket money felt, to Yun Zijin, like an offering to a beggar.
Xia Zhengguang fell silent. He had only heard bits and pieces about Yun Zijin from his wife, Zhang Yiqin, and his daughter, Xia Jiajiao. He knew she must have some money of her own, but he had no idea she was wealthy enough to spend five million in one day.
Even Xia Jiajiao wouldn’t dare spend five million in a single day!
But Xia Zhengguang failed to consider that if Yun Zijin only had a little money, she would never have been in a position to consider buying that land in the South Suburb, let alone plan to build a manor on it.
"Then what will it take for you to come home for dinner? You’ve been back in the Imperial City for so long and haven’t even visited home once. If word gets out, people will think that I, Xia Zhengguang, am barring my own daughter from her home. How would that look!"
’So now he’s decided to play the part of a father. Where was this act back then?’
Yun Zijin rolled her eyes, not falling for his act. "I have my own house, so you needn’t trouble yourself."
"How can a house you bought yourself compare to your family home? Listen to Dad and come home for dinner when you have time."
"Everyone in the family is waiting for you to come back. You... having a daughter who won’t return home... do you have any idea how much that pains me as a father?"
"If you’re having heart problems, go to a hospital. If that’s all, I’m hanging up. It’s late, and I still need to have dinner."
With that, Yun Zijin hung up and promptly blocked the number.
’If they dared to call, she dared to block them.’
’It was a contest to see whether they could borrow more phones than she could block.’
Xia Zhengguang was about to say something else, but the line suddenly went dead with a dial tone. He pulled the phone away from his ear and saw that Yun Zijin had already hung up.
His benevolent, fatherly expression from a moment ago vanished, instantly replaced by a dark look.
"Well? What did that brat say? When is she coming home for dinner?"
Zhang Yiqin had been standing by his side the entire time, but she had kept quiet so as not to disrupt Xia Zhengguang’s performance.
That was right. Xia Zhengguang and Xia Zhiyun had laid their plan bare before the entire family, and today’s call had been made with every single Xia family member looking on.
"What else could she have said? She’s the same as always—stubborn and ungrateful!"
"Dad, please don’t be angry. I’m sure my sister didn’t mean it. She’s... she’s probably just upset because of me..."
"Dad, I should just move out. If I leave, I’m sure my sister will be willing to come home."
As Xia Jiajiao spoke, her eyes began to turn red.
"What nonsense are you spouting? I’m the one who watched you grow up; you *are* my real daughter! Anyone can move out, but it will never be you!"
