Chapter 431: Chapter-431
"A competition, My Lady?" Samuel rumbled, his voice dropping into a dangerously low, velvety register that sent a sudden thrill down Heena’s spine.
His large, scarred hands slowly came up, deliberately overlapping hers where she tightly gripped his clothes. He didn’t break her hold; instead, his warm, heavy fingers gently wrapped around her wrists, anchoring her hands directly against his pounding heart.
"This servant is a man of absolute fidelity," he whispered, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that threatened to melt the wooden mask right off his face. "My wife holds my entire soul in the palm of her hand. If you wish to prove you are greater than her... I am afraid My Lady will have to try exceptionally hard to make me stray."
Heena narrowed her eyes, a dangerous, highly competitive thrill sparking in her chest. She could see the hidden, deeply amused glint in his eyes. This man knew exactly what he was doing. He was using her own haughty, noble-lady persona to flirt with her relentlessly, completely secure in the knowledge that ’she’ was the flawless, beautiful wife he was praising so highly.
"Is that a challenge, Mr. Guard?" Heena purred, her fingers tightening on his collar as she pulled him down another fraction of an inch, entirely unfazed by his massive, imposing frame. "You think your loyalty to some woman can withstand my whims? You underestimate just how ruthless this lady can be when she wants to destroy something."
Behind his mask, Samuel bit his lower lip, his heart hammering so violently against his ribs that Heena could feel the vibrations through her palms. The sheer proximity, the sweet scent of her hair, and the scandalous position of her leg brushing against his tunic were pushing his rigid sense of propriety to its absolute, agonizing limit.
"Then by all means, My Lady," Samuel rasped, his breath hitching as he leaned in until his mask almost brushed the tip of her nose. "Show me your ruthlessness. Let this loyal servant see exactly how you intend to compete with the woman who already owns me."
Before Heena could fire back another sharp, teasing retort, a frantic, high-pitched voice violently exploded inside her mind.
HOST! HOST, OH MY GOD, STOP FLIRTING FOR A SECOND! THE RADAR IS BLINKING! the System shrieked, its digital avatar practically turning inside out with panic. THE REGRESSOR SIGNATURE! IT JUST MOVED! THEY JUMPED CHANNELS FROM THE CAPITAL AND ARE ACTIVELY INTERCEPTING THE MARQUISATE’S OUTER BORDER LOGISTICS RIGHT NOW!
The romantic, thick atmosphere in the bedroom instantly shattered. Heena’s playful smile locked in place for a microsecond before her eyes sharpened into the icy, calculating gaze of a veteran Black Lotus.
’What did you just say?’ Heena snapped internally, her competitive spirit instantly shifting from her husband to her actual prey.
’’The Regressor!" the System whimpered, pulling up a tiny, frantic map in her mind. ’’They aren’t waiting in the capital anymore! They are making a move on your family’s outer supply lines right this second!’’
Heena slowly let go of Samuel’s collar, her hands sliding down his chest as her mind immediately began mapping out a counter-strategy. It looked like the ghost she was hunting had just decided to walk right into her trap.
Samuel was on the absolute brink of heaven, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs, when Heena’s grip suddenly relaxed and she completely checked out of the moment.
A terrible, deeply ominous feeling instantly washed over him. No, no, no, no, no. Not again.
The last time he had seen his wife wear that exact same look of sudden, calculating distraction, he had been left to bear the physical and mental torment of unfulfilled anticipation entirely alone for days. He was a red-blooded man, and his wife absolutely loved to tease him right to the edge—only to hit the emergency brakes the exact moment he was on the verge of reaching paradise.
He looked down at her, his voice cracking slightly behind his mask. "Wife...?"
He desperately grabbed her hand, attempting to pull her back into the thick, romantic atmosphere that had been enveloping them just a second ago.
Heena didn’t even blink. The seductive, playful noblewoman vanished in a puff of smoke, replaced by the icy efficiency of a veteran hunter. She casually tapped his cheek. "Get dressed properly, Mr. Guard. We are leaving right now."
Samuel figuratively slapped his own forehead in utter despair. *What the actual heck?!* The mood had been absolutely flawless! The tension had been thick enough to cut with a blade! How on earth could she just flip a switch and turn into ice?
He looked at her, entirely discarding his terrifying assassin persona as he leaned in close. He widened his dark eyes behind the mask, desperately trying to look as pitiful, coy, and hopelessly lovely as possible.
"Can we please just go a little bit later?" Samuel pleaded, his deep voice dropping into a soft, utterly desperate whine. "Let’s finish what we started first. Just five minutes, My Lady..."
Heena stared back at his devastatingly handsome puppy-dog routine, completely unmoved by the sheer weaponized tragedy of his expression. She patted his cheek one last time, her tone entirely firm and non-negotiable.
"No. Let’s go."
Samuel let out a long, agonizing groan, his broad shoulders slumping in complete defeat as he reluctantly pulled back. He knew that tone. When his wife decided it was time to move, not even a mountain of gold or a direct imperial decree could hold her back. With a heavy, deeply frustrated sigh, he began to fix his collar, silently cursing whatever external force had just ruined the best moment of his week.
Samuel dragged himself up from his knees, adjusting his skewed collar with the slow, tragic movements of a man whose entire world had just been callously upended. He pulled his wooden cat mask tightly against his face, his heavy, suffocating assassin aura instantly snapping back into place.
On the outside, he looked like a terrifying, unyielding god of death. On the inside, he was crying tears of pure, unadulterated frustration.
"Where are we heading, My Lady?" Samuel rumbled, his voice instantly dropping back into its professional, gravelly shadow-guard cadence—though there was still a tiny, unmistakable trace of a sulk hidden beneath the surface.
Heena slipped out of the plush bed, her indoor silk slippers clicking softly against the stone floor as she walked over to her wardrobe to grab a heavy traveling cloak. Seera’s body was still thoroughly weak and plagued by a lingering nausea, but the sheer, adrenaline-fueled motivation of securing her corporate payout completely overrode her physical limitations.
’System,’ Heena commanded internally, throwing the dark cloak over her shoulders. ’Give me the exact details of the logistics line they are targeting.’
The little holographic lion rapidly tapped on a transparent floating keyboard inside her mind. ’’It’s the Marquisate’s northern iron-ore convoy, Host! Because your useless father was stripped of his authority today, the guard schedules for the outer borders are completely in flux. The Regressor is taking advantage of the chaotic transition to hijack the shipment! If they succeed, it will cripple the Grandfather’s military supply line for the upcoming winter campaign.’’
A dark, icy gleam flashed across Heena’s eyes as she tied the silk ribbons of her cloak. ’A tactical strike on the family’s foundations. This Regressor certainly knows where it hurts.’
