Chapter 362: Chapter 360: How Did We End Up Like This? Part 2

’An impulse surged within her, telling her to charge forward and tear them apart. Annabelle Linton can only be yours.’

’But what was the use in charging forward?’

’It would only lead to more disappointment, more heartbreak.’

She knew that woman. If something happened, Annabelle would never stand by her side.

Leona Grant stood there with her hands in her pockets, a slender figure. Her eyes were serene, and she was quieter than ever before. For all her steely strength, she radiated a pitiable loneliness.

Aaron Wyatt kissed Annabelle Linton and said softly, "Let’s go. I’m taking you home."

Home...

’What a warm word.’

Annabelle Linton’s eyelashes trembled slightly. A mist of tears welled up in her eyes, reflecting the shimmering glow of the streetlights as she looked at him.

Aaron Wyatt’s heart melted completely.

He reached out to pat her head again, then kissed her forehead and said gently, "Don’t be sad. It hurts me when you’re sad. There, there."

He wiped away her tears, bent down, and swept her up into his arms. A roguish smile played on his lips. "Had enough fun? Time to go home. Lord Wyatt is carrying you back now, be good."

Caught completely off guard, Annabelle was lifted into his arms and instinctively threw her arms around his neck in surprise.

He smiled gently at her.

She stared at him blankly and asked subconsciously, "Aaron Wyatt, why are you so good to me?"

A fleeting light flickered in Aaron Wyatt’s eyes before he nonchalantly looked away and continued walking. "Because you’re Annabelle Linton."

The corners of Annabelle Linton’s mouth curved up slightly. She lowered her gaze and turned to nestle her face in his chest.

But as she turned her head, her eyes met Leona Grant’s icy gaze.

Leona Grant watched her impassively. Her face was expressionless, but her eyes were piercingly cold.

Under the moonlight, she seemed even colder than the moon itself. The streetlight poured down from above, plunging half of her face into shadow, while on the other half, a look of pain was faintly visible.

Loneliness, sorrow, heartbreak, and pleading—all crowded into her expression.

Annabelle Linton glanced at her once, then expressionlessly looked away and closed her eyes.

Leona Grant simply watched them walk away, wanting to stop them but lacking the courage to step forward.

Pain flickered in her deep eyes, and a profound gloom settled over her beautiful face.

She stood rooted to the spot, her vision blurring.

"Sis, go after her!" Ashley Grant urged Leona Grant, watching the couple’s retreating backs.

Leona Grant gave a silent, soft laugh, as if she had just heard the biggest joke in the world.

’Fight for her?’

’With what?’

The past flashed before her eyes, frame by frame. The bizarre, dappled nights were tangled with too many old heartaches and regrets.

Scenes from the past surfaced in her mind.

"Annabelle Linton, you shameless woman! Did you really think scheming your way into the Grant family would make you the Young Madam? What a joke!"

"Annabelle Linton, isn’t that pathetic expression of yours disgusting? What are you crying for? If you have the guts, go tell Grandpa you want a divorce! What’s with the act?"

"Get lost! I’ve never met a woman as disgusting as you. How can someone like you have the nerve to even be alive?"

"Annabelle Linton, tell me, how long are you going to keep pestering me? You disgust me! Can you just get lost?"

"You’re sick again? How are you sick every single day? What makes you so much more delicate than everyone else? If you’re that weak, what’s the point of being alive? Are you done with your act yet?"

"Annabelle Linton, every woman I’ve ever met is better than you. You’re the most detestable woman I’ve ever seen. If I were you, I would’ve just died already!"

"Annabelle Linton, you’re truly worthless..."

Leona Grant clutched her aching chest as she walked back, step by step. The corners of her mouth twisted in a pained grimace. She wanted to laugh, but she couldn’t. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

’Look... after hurting her like that for twenty years, what kind of miracle would it take to make her come back?’
