Chapter 53: Chapter 54: Ivy lay there... lifeless.

One second, I was falling, fire licking dangerously close to my face, the searing heat brushing against my skin, while the swarm of Blood Ants waited beneath me like a living, crawling carpet of death. The very real possibility of dying in the most embarrassing, humiliating, and utterly stupid way imaginable flashed through my mind in a blinding instant.

And the next....

Strong hands grabbed me with lightning speed.

Firm. Unyielding. Powerful.

One closed around my upper arm, fingers digging in just enough to anchor me securely without bruising. The other wrapped around my waist, solid and unshakable, pulling me back with raw strength that left no room for resistance.

I was yanked backward so sharply that the air punched out of my lungs in a painful whoosh, my breath catching violently in my throat. My feet left the ground for a heartbeat before reality reasserted itself.

I didn’t hit the ground.

I didn’t touch the ants.

I didn’t burn alive.

I simply... stopped.

Suspended for half a terrifying second, maybe less, maybe more, in that fragile, razor-thin space between total disaster and miraculous survival. A space where everything in existence seemed to hang by a single, delicate thread so thin you could almost feel it straining, threatening to snap at any moment.

Then reality slammed back into place with brutal force.

I stumbled as my feet finally touched solid ground again, my legs suddenly uncooperative and trembling beneath me. My balance was completely gone, my heart pounding so violently it felt like it might tear itself free from my chest and flee into the forest on its own.

"...Wow," I breathed shakily, the single word coming out uneven and weak, my wide eyes still locked on the exact spot where I would have landed in a pile of fire and death. "That was... almost a very dramatic death."

Because truly....

Falling face-first into flames and a swarm of killer ants?

That would have been an absurd, ridiculous way to go.

Not tragic.

Not heroic.

Not even memorable in any respectable sense.

Just... stupid. Pathetic. The kind of ending people would whisper about with secondhand embarrassment for years.

Definitely not the legacy I was hoping for in this nightmare world.

I let out a slow, uneven breath and brushed imaginary dust off my clothes with trembling hands, forcing them to move as if I hadn’t just been seconds away from becoming a gruesome cautionary tale for the others.

"Good to know I can still keep things interesting," I added, my voice intentionally light. Too light. Almost detached, like it belonged to someone else entirely.

Inside, though?

My hands were still shaking uncontrollably.

My pulse refused to slow down.

And there was this lingering, icy awareness crawling beneath my skin, that I had almost died.

Again.

---

"Elion, Ashriel..." I started, turning slightly, intending to say something. Anything. Thanks, maybe. Or at least acknowledge the fact that they had just saved my life.

But I didn’t get the chance.

A sharp, violent thud cut through the night air.

Followed immediately by a choked, strangled sound that didn’t belong in any normal conversation.

We all turned at once.

Thorne stood directly in front of Ivy.

Very close.

His posture rigid, his presence heavy and radiating cold fury.

His fist was still slightly clenched at his side.

Ivy was bent forward, her body folding in on itself as she clutched her stomach desperately, gasping for air like it had been violently ripped from her lungs.

He had hit her.

Hard.

"What the hell....?!" Theo snapped, already moving forward, his voice sharp with disbelief and rising anger.

Kaden rushed after him immediately, her eyes wide with shock written plainly across her face. "Thorne... why would you...?!"

Elion frowned deeply, confusion flashing across his features before it hardened into something far more cautious and guarded.

And me?

I just stared.

Because deep down, I already knew.

I hadn’t seen it clearly in the moment.

I hadn’t processed it fast enough.

But my body had recognized the truth instinctively.

That push, the one that had sent me falling forward into the fire and ants...

That wasn’t an accident.

---

"Why did you do that?" Theo demanded, stepping protectively in front of Ivy now, his stance firm, his tone edged with genuine anger. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"I didn’t..." Ivy straightened slowly, her voice tight and strained from the impact, still catching her breath. "It was a mistake."

A mistake.

Right.

Her words said one thing.

But her face told an entirely different story.

No panic.

No guilt.

No flicker of horror at what she had almost caused.

Just... Annoyance.

Subtle. Controlled. Carefully masked.

But it was there.

Like she was quietly frustrated that her plan hadn’t gone exactly the way she wanted.

Kaden’s expression darkened noticeably. "Even if it was a mistake, you should’ve been more careful. You almost got her killed."

That... surprised me.

A little.

I hadn’t expected him to take my side.

I hadn’t expected anyone to, honestly... Maybe Elion...maybe

I didn’t wait.

Didn’t think.

Didn’t weigh the consequences or consider the possible outcomes.

I just moved.

My hand came up fast and sharp, aiming straight for her face in a slap born of raw fury and lingering terror.

But I didn’t even get close.

Ivy caught my wrist mid-air with effortless precision.

Her reflexes were faster. Stronger. Deadly.

Her grip tightened instantly, unyielding, her fingers like iron bands locked around my skin.

Her eyes locked onto mine.

Cold..... Flat.

Completely unapologetic.

"Why?" I asked, my voice low and far steadier than I actually felt inside.

She didn’t answer.

Fine.

I tilted my head slightly, a small, humorless smile curving my lips despite the adrenaline still surging through me.

"Oh... I get it."

Her eyes flickered.... Just a fraction.

Barely noticeable, but I saw it.

Direct hit.

Good.

"It’s not my fault you couldn’t keep Elion."

That one landed exactly where I wanted it to.

I felt the impact.

Saw the tiny shift beneath her iron control.

That brief, satisfying crack in her perfect composure.

Behind me, Elion went very still.

I didn’t turn to look.

Ivy didn’t say a single word.

Didn’t react outwardly beyond that micro-expression.

But her grip tightened, just slightly, before she finally released my wrist.

"Enough," Kaden cut in sharply, the tension in his voice thick enough to choke on. "We can fight each other later, if we’re still alive."

Fair.... Very fair.

And just like that....

We went back to survival.

Time lost all meaning after that.

Minutes blurred painfully into hours.

Or maybe it was the other way around.

Everything reduced to pure instinct.

Constant movement.

Fire. Step. Burn. Crush.

Repeat.

Over and over and over again until the motions felt burned into my soul.

The ants kept coming.

Small.

Almost invisible in the weak light.

But endless.

Relentless.

They crawled across the ground in endless waves, slipping through cracks in the earth, emerging from shadows we hadn’t even noticed before. We crushed them underfoot, burned them with our makeshift torches, drove them back inch by painful inch.

And still...

They kept coming.

At some point, my arms started to ache with a deep, burning soreness that settled heavily into my muscles and refused to leave. My legs felt leaden, like they no longer fully belonged to me. My breathing turned ragged and uneven, shallow gasps dragging in air that tasted of smoke, dirt, and something faintly metallic and bitter.

But I didn’t stop.

None of us did.

Because stopping...even for a single second... meant death.

Simple.

Uncomplicated.

Final.

Then.... Slowly....

Something in the world began to shift.

At first, it was subtle. Almost unnoticeable.

The suffocating darkness around us softened at the edges.

The sky, hidden behind the thick canopy overhead, started to change.

Not bright yet. But lighter.

Light.

Weak.

Pale.

But undeniably there.

And just like that...

The ants began to retreat.

Not in panic.

Not chaotically.

But gradually. Methodically. Like a tide pulling back from the shore at dawn.

They disappeared into the earth, slipping into cracks and shadows until they were gone.

We stopped.

One by one.

Breathing hard.

Chests rising and falling unevenly.

Watching and waiting.

Still expecting them to surge forward again and prove this wasn’t truly over.

But they didn’t.

"They’re... leaving," Lyra whispered, her voice quiet and almost disbelieving.

Theo exhaled a long, shaky breath. "It’s working..."

Ashriel said nothing.

But his sharp gaze remained fixed on the ground, observant and confirming.

"They only come at night," Kaden muttered, wiping sweat from his brow. "So that’s it?"

"Seems like it," Elion replied quietly.

And just like that...

Relief hit us all.

Heavy.

Sudden.

Overwhelming.

It settled deep into my bones, into my exhausted lungs, into every tired fiber of my being.

We made it.

"We made it..." Theo said softly, as if he didn’t quite believe the words himself.

I let out a small, tired laugh, dragging a trembling hand through my messy hair.

"Wow. Surviving the night. I feel so incredibly accomplished."

My voice was lighter now.

Still tired.

Still worn down to the core.

But... alive.

Then....

A scream.

Sharp and sudden.

Full of raw, agonizing pain.

It sliced through the fragile moment of relief like a razor-sharp blade.

We all turned at the same time.

It was Ivy.

She collapsed.

Her body hit the ground hard, the impact dull and sickeningly final against the dirt.

Her hands clawed desperately at her arm, fingers digging viciously into her own skin as if trying to rip something invisible out.

Her face twisted....

No longer controlled.

No longer composed.

But raw.

Pure.

Unfiltered pain.

"Ivy....?!" Lyra rushed forward instantly.

Theo dropped beside her, panic rising sharply in his voice. "What’s wrong...?!"

I didn’t move.

I froze completely.

Ivy’s breathing turned erratic.

Jagged.

Her chest rising too fast, too uneven.

Her body trembled, then began shaking violently, as if something deep inside her was unraveling all at once.

Her scream cut off...

Abruptly.

Like someone had reached inside her and simply... switched something off.

And then silence engulfed.

Just like that.

Ivy went still completely.

No movement. No breath or sound.

I stared.

Waiting for something.

A twitch.

A gasp.

Anything.

Nothing came.

Ivy just lay there.

Lifeless.
