Chapter 2097: The Last Skinchanger, Ninhursag

-----

"Impressive as always, Arafunn." A calm yet powerful voice rang out as the earth itself trembled beneath them. From a side street, a towering woman with dark skin, flowing vine-like hair, and eyes glowing with primal power emerged. It was Ninhursag. She had changed greatly. She no longer transformed into giant monsters right away, but her aura surged with tremendous strength as she channeled dozens of different monsters she had absorbed. Her axe, a living piece of her own body obtained through the trials she had faced, swung forward and unleashed a giant swarm of monsters.

Although Ninhursag was the last member of the Skinchanger Tribe and no hero at all, she had always possessed impressive shapeshifting abilities. She was a close ally of the heroes and had lived in the jungles with the Amazonian Tribe for many years. Now she had stepped into the wider world more than ever before. After years of intensive training in her family’s inheritance alongside Zack, Luck, and even Arafunn, she advanced with a brand-new level of power.

"Ninhursag, you’re quick to catch up. Although I’ve already dealt with the three bosses," Arafunn said.

"Yes, I know, but remember that the tower had a hundred floors, right?"

"Hm, right. Wait, are we really going to fight one hundred bosses?!" Arafunn panicked for a moment.

He watched as the massive swarm of monsters approached. Hundreds of them tore through the rubble at once and reached the two heroes in mere seconds. Giant monstrosities from Floor 4 all the way to Floor 10 had arrived, led by their bosses. Mutated by Lolth’s powers and curses, they had been turned into intelligent generals of her endless army.

"We must claim this world as our own! Now that we monsters possess the same intelligence as humans, we are not going to let you slaughter us! We will devour you all!" From Floor 4, the Obsidian Caverns, the Obsidian Bone Drake advanced. A massive skeletal dragon fused with black crystal armor; it breathed miasmic bone shards and could reassemble itself.

"Ahhh, delicious human flesh, blood everywhere! Come to mama!" From Floor 5, the Blood Fungus Grotto, the Bloodweaver Matriarch stepped forward. A gigantic fleshy queen with hundreds of blood-red tentacles and eyes, she could mind-control infected victims.

"These humans possess superb forging skills, but they pale in comparison to my great works of art. Now despair, humans! Your time to be replaced has come!" From Floor 6, the Shadowsteel Foundry, the Iron Tyrant Forgelord walked forward. His steps made the ground shatter and flames erupt. A colossal, armored giant fused with living molten metal and shadow, he commanded all constructs on his floor.

"GRYYAAARRRR! HUMANS! SOULS! FLESH! BLOOD!" From Floor 7, the Abyssal Mire, the Greater Miasmic Hydra advanced. It spewed miasma and poison everywhere. A seven-headed hydra whose heads constantly mutated, cutting one caused two cursed heads to regrow.

"Fufufu! Now go, my beauties! Spread love to the world and let the humans know that we’ve come here to finally replace them!" From Floor 8, the Crystal Hive, the Hive Empress Vesara walked in. A gigantic crystalline spider-queen, she could lay eggs that hatched into loyal aberrant minions instantly and possessed strong mental domination abilities.

"Time for judgement has come. We, monsters, blessed with almighty strength and now unparalleled intelligence, shall not let any human trample over us anymore!" From Floor 9, the Thunderous Rift, the almighty Storm Sovereign Ra’khan flew forward. A winged serpent dragon that controlled weather inside the floor, he summoned lightning storms and thunder clones.

"Come, my children, let us show the humans, and their gods, that the age of gods and humans has come to an end. The era of monsters is about to begin!" From Floor 10, the Fallen Pantheon Hall, the Profaned Archangel Mal’thir flew into the scene. He laughed with clear amusement at the world now that he possessed intelligence. A fallen divine being with six broken wings covered in purple crystals, he wielded corrupted holy magic mixed with miasma. He was one of the strongest early bosses.

It was more shocking than they could have ever imagined. Every single boss was not just stronger. They were as smart as humans, commanding troops, laughing, and expressing emotions. It was no longer just a monster flood or a simple invasion.

"It’s a war..." Arafunn’s eyes narrowed with seriousness. "That evil god boosting all the monsters has granted them intelligence that has made them unparalleled existences! This changes everything. We’re against an army, a kingdom of monsters that wicked god has created."

"Fufufu, so you’re the heroes?"

"?!"

"!!!"

Arafunn and Ninhursag panicked as the archangel emerged above them with a gentle smile. Beneath the purple crystals covering his body like armor, he resembled a beautiful human with short blonde hair and pale skin covered with purple tattoos. His broken wings spread wide as his eyes fired lasers.

"Your time has come. The monsters shall govern the world now! Give up and fall into despair, hahahaha!"

"D-Damn it all!" Arafunn clicked his tongue in frustration.

"They’re really coming!" Ninhursag avoided the incoming missiles and lasers, only to find the Obsidian Bone Drake emerge behind her. Its jaws opened wide and bit into her body in an instant. "Nngh?! Begone!"

With fury burning in her veins, she channeled her beastly power and rapidly grew into a gigantic half-beast woman. She summoned the beasts and monster spirits she had copied, fusing them into a powerful chimera form.

CRAAASH!

"Ngaaaaagghhh?!"

The Drake screamed in horror and collapsed to the ground, but its bones rapidly began to reassemble. A giant claw pushed Ninhursag away. She retaliated fiercely. Her giant axe charged with swirling beast spirits until she smashed the bone dragon into smithereens.

"BEGONE I SAY!"

BOOOOOOOMMM!!!

A massive explosion of spiritual energies erupted and sent several other bosses flying backward. The small fry monsters, which were threats on their own, were instantly shredded to pieces and died on the spot.

But the bosses remained alive, except for the one she had killed. Behind them, some conjured healing magic. The Storm Sovereign Ra’khan cast healing spells and thunderous armor on all the other bosses. Then the heavy hitters rushed forward to act as tanks while the magic casters fired spells from afar and summoned their offspring to harass the heroes.

"Is it my imagination or are they working like humans?!" Arafunn avoided giant claws, bites, and magic spells as he danced half-carefreely through the skies.

"Kind of!" Ninhursag clicked her tongue in annoyance. "Damn it, this is getting ridiculous. Let’s go all-out and blast them all away, Arafunn! A combined attack! Like we learned."

"Fine," Arafunn replied. His eyes grew sharper with determination. "While Zack and Luck are busy doing their own thing, we have to make sure to pull our own weight around here after all, right?"
