Chapter 179: Compensating For Something?

Sylvaris grinned at such a demand.

"You’re so loud... quiet down already. Or are we compensating for something tiny?" he replied, his eyes moving down and then back up for a brief moment, the single motion making it painfully obvious what he was suggesting. "If you need some advice, maybe I can think of something to help a brother in need." He scratched the inside of his ear, pretending the man’s voice had actually hurt him, while the corner of his lips curled in that infuriating way that made people want to tear his face off.

"Annoying vermin!"

The thundering axe moved faster than the eye could catch, lightning screaming around its edge as it came crashing toward him. The air itself seemed to split apart before the blade even reached him, carrying enough force to crush stone and turn flesh into ash.

And yet Sylvaris merely bounced to the side, his sword meeting the weapon at an angle and redirecting the terrifying force away from his body with practiced ease. Lightning still passed close enough to scorch his skin, leaving several shallow burns and thin bloody cuts across him, but his grin did not fade.

"Not bad," Sylvaris said with a smirk as brilliant white light burst from his weapon and stretched over the blade like a glowing glove. Red and black energy twisted around it like two serpents, spiraling tighter and tighter until all of it gathered at the tip, the pressure distorting the air around his sword. Then, with a quick thrust, a sharp wave tore through the air and flew toward the overlord’s side, aiming just below his ribs.

Lightning crackled as the demon snorted, steam shooting from his nose like an old-fashioned train.

Or at least that was what Sylvaris thought when he saw it. Yeah, the author had clearly run out of imagination by now, so I’m forced to read that pervert’s mind... and I’m not even getting paid for this. Slaving away for days without a single coin...

Hey! Don’t you dare threaten to erase me! Do you know who I am? I’m the narrator! You damn tyrant! Fine, fine, I’ll continue, geez...

The demon barely extended his hand forward, his black skin shining like metal beneath the sun. The sharp attack Sylvaris had launched exploded on impact, scattering white orbs of mana in every direction. For a second, it looked as if the attack had been completely crushed by brute strength alone, leaving nothing behind except drifting sparks of holy light.

"Such a puny attack is nothing but—?!"

Before the demon overlord could finish his arrogant words, his heart seemed to stop for a single second, sending a sudden wave of dizziness through his massive body. Lightning crackled across his skin as red smoke began to rise from him, black ooze dripping from his nose while white mist danced across his palm. His fingers twitched once, then again, as if his own body had suddenly forgotten how to obey him.

"I call that misdirection. Works on braindead people, ya know." Sylvaris bounced the edge of his sword against his shoulder as he took a step forward, looking far too relaxed for someone standing before a monster several times his size.

Vespera’s eyes were so wide they almost popped out of their sockets. Only now did she understand how lucky she had been that Sylvaris had not fought her seriously, or she would have died without even being able to say "huh?" before his blade cut her down.

Submitting to him was the right idea. And here I thought I was a demon... no. That feeling he gives me... he’s even worse than the demon lord. If I don’t behave, I’ll definitely die by Sylvaris’s blade.

The tall lightning demon took a step back, each movement shaking the ground beneath him. And yet the tiny human before him, whose steps could not even disturb the dirt he walked on, somehow felt like the giant instead. It was not his height, not his muscles, and not even the strange holy power surrounding his blade. It was the way he advanced as if victory had already happened, and everyone else was simply late to realize it.

"Where are you going? Let brother take care of you." Sylvaris grinned wider, his eyes gleaming with cruel amusement as he slowly advanced. "After I’m done with you, you won’t ever need to compensate for your small dick again, because you won’t be alive anymore."

The axe in the demon overlord’s hand crackled with lightning so terrifying that it seemed to draw directly from the sky itself. Dark clouds churned above him, dragged together by his rage, and every bolt that fell was devoured by the weapon instead of striking the ground. A demonic head formed around the axe, its massive teeth and curved horns aimed at Sylvaris as the overlord gathered everything he had left into one final, desperate attempt to kill the threat standing before him.

"Die!"

The demon overlord launched his attack.

This time, however, Sylvaris did not take it lightly. His eyes narrowed, and his muscles swelled ever so slightly beneath his skin as he tightened his grip around the sword. The joking expression on his face did not fully vanish, but something colder appeared behind it, the kind of focus that made even his mockery feel dangerous.

What a terrifying power. If not for the battle goddess trial, I would have never been able to take this. But now... I want to test my strength.

Sylvaris’s blade flew up to meet the attack head-on.

Sparks exploded the moment the two weapons collided, the force of the impact tearing through the ground beneath them. Terrifying lightning slashed across Sylvaris’s body, burning into his flesh, but his holy energy surged back just as violently, cutting into the demon overlord in return. The shockwave rolled outward, forcing loose stones to jump from the ground and making Vespera instinctively shield her face with her arms.

Neither side could force the other back, neither weapon could break through, and for a moment the two of them remained locked in a deadly stalemate where the first one to falter, the first one to lose his nerve, would also be the first one to lose his life.
