Jack led the group toward the Grand Arena's registration wing. The whole building was a massive, circular fortress of grey stone and polished brass. Its architecture was a mixture of old-world masonry and the burgeoning steam-engine aesthetic.
Clockwork gears the size of carriage wheels rotated slowly above the main archway. Marking the time until the tournament festivities began.
"Name of the participating entities?" The clerk asked. Not looking up from a thick ledger. He was an elderly man with thick spectacles. A faint scent of alchemical ink was clinging to his robes.
"We have two groups for the Great Game of Glory." Jack said. Leaning against the counter. "The first is the Silent Mermaid. Members are Jack Night, Reina Night, Aella Night, Ned Midlane, and Barnaby Lutemaker. The second team is the Ocean Wanderer. The members... Baroness Sapphire Artheim, Bell Basher, Moby Knot, Leon Drake, and Chloe Chase."
The clerk's pen scratched against the parchment. "And the individual events?"
"Marksmanship Mastery... Reina Night, Aella Night, and Baroness Sapphire Artheim." Jack listed. "Battle King Duel... Leon Drake, Bell Basher, and Moby Knot."
The participating fees were not exactly cheap. However, Jack didn't blink at the cost. He had more than enough wealth from the recent treasure hunt.
He also decisively purchased a block of premium spectator tickets for the whole crew. Ensuring they had a clear view of the whole competition events.
Rune hovered near his shoulder all the time. Her tiny body was pulsing with a steady, serene sapphire light. Indicating her approval of the arrangements.
"Everything is set, Dear." Reina said. Collecting the registration slips into her [Spatial Bag]. She looked at the bustling crowd around them. "We'll just need to see what happens tomorrow."
"Most likely... a boring opening ceremony, with a long speech." Jack replied bluntly. "Hopefully, the marksmanship contest afterward will be more interesting. Whatever... Let's get some rest. Tomorrow, the show starts."
...
The following morning, the sun rose over the eastern part of the Northcoast Mountains. Casting long, jagged shadows across Sweetmoon City.
Even that early in the morning, the Grand Arena had already been packed to capacity. Thousands... probably even tens of thousands spectators filled the tiered stone benches. Their voices created a low, constant roar that vibrated in the chest.
The Opening Ceremony began with a thunderous blast from twelve steam-organs positioned around the arena’s perimeter. Huge plumes of white vapor shot into the air. Illuminated by colorful alchemical flares.
A levitating platform, etched with gravity-runes, descended from the highest spire of the arena. Standing upon it was an elegant woman of incredible presence.
Jack immediately recognized her from her appearance. The Moonlight Queen. The Ruler of Grandmoon Island.
She wore a gown of shimmering silver silk. A piece of dress that seemed to catch the morning light and hold it captive. Her hair was a waterfall of pale platinum. And her eyes, even from a distance, appeared to glow with an inner luminescence.
"Citizens of Two Moon Island! Visitors from across the seas!" Her voice rang out. Magically amplified so that it felt as though she were whispering into everyone’s ear simultaneously.
"Absolute, honorable strength... the greatest power to protect the world... They are the final destination of many beings, either common or transcendent." She continued. "These days, we will witness the pinnacle of that strength. Today, we will witness the pinnacle of marksmanship. Tomorrow, we will witness the pinnacle of power and control. And the day after tomorrow, we will witness the pinnacle of teamwork and courage."
She raised her hand and shouted. "Let the Battle Moon Tournament... begin!"
As she ended her speech and dropped her hand, explosive fireworks and colorful smokes rose up to the morning sky. Signifying the beginning of the tournament.
Jack sat in the premium section. Leaning back with his arms crossed. He narrowed his eyes. Activating his [Eyes of Judgement].
Immediately, the world shifted in his sight. Vibrant panels of information began to overlay his vision. A torrent of data flooded his mind. Categorized and ranked.
He observed the queen. Queen Selena Lunarian. She was an enhanced transcendent character. Her power class was something Jack had never seen or known before. Moonlight Sovereign. This was very likely a bloodline class, just like Aella's mysterious faewitch class.

She was strong, certainly, at the peak of enhanced level. But, the old man beside her was on a different league.
Jack sensed illuminated level of power from him. Thus, he only dared to do a shallow scan. Even the information panel flared with a cautionary crimson border.
His scan showed that it was the Prime Minister of Grandmoon Island. Earl Graven Lunarian. Unlike the Queen, who projected power like a beacon, the old man felt like a black hole. Unobtrusive yet terrifyingly dense.
His power class was also something Jack had never heard, the Moonlight Guardian. It was very likely related to the Moonlight Sovereign class. Another bloodline related class.
"The old man is the real deal." Jack muttered to himself. He could feel that the old man was probably as strong as the illuminated beings he had seen during the chaos caused by the [Forbidden Chalice] in the Valley of Despair.
Rune pulsed a cautious orange in agreement.
Jack observed more people around the queen. They were all, at first glance, enhanced transcendent beings. And they had standard power classes... primal sorcerers, mystic scholars, and eldritch knights.
But, he could sense a few suppressed power hidden among them, very likely illuminated ones. The power of the Grandmoon Kingdom seemed to be greater than what he had thought.
He turned his gaze toward the crowd. Looking for troublesome variables. His eyes swept over the thousands of faces. The [Eyes of Judgement] was automatically filtering out the mundane civilians and regular transcendent beings.
He was focusing on negative karma and the discordant energies. And he quickly found them. Potential trouble makers.
In the southern seats, a group of seven men sat together. They wore the fine leather outfits of mercenaries. But they were not mercenaries. They were all affiliated to Glorious Pirates.
They were not particularly strong for transcendent beings. But every single one of them had a demon seed inside their hearts. Meaning... they would cause trouble when they died.
In other places, Jack also spotted figures that were definitely troublesome. There were about sixteen members of Purity Cult, with four particularly strong individuals.
Other cultists from problematic organizations were also here. He could see cultists from Undeath Sect. Thirteen members altogether. And there were twenty four members of Circles of Wealth, as well as sixteen members of Eternal Soul Cult.
Other than that, there were more than thirty Black Market Syndicate members mixed among the audience. And there were also three almost-illuminated individuals from the criminal organization, the Night Salvation Association.
"A pile of troubles is here." Jack whispered to his crew mates. "Stay vigilant. We have troublemakers from at least seven nasty organizations in the audience. Cultists, terrorists, pirates..."
Reina's expression didn't change. But she immediately whispered back without moving her lips. "Understood, Dear. Do we have glorious pirates here?"
"Yeah. Seven of them in the southern seats." Jack replied on a low voice. "Pay attention, but don't act unless it is necessary. The kingdom has more than enough power to suppress them. The prime minister beside the queen is already an illuminated powerhouse."
The crew members immediately nodded in serious faces. Determined to keep up their vigilance and not taking any interfering actions unless necessary.
...
The ceremony concluded with another fireworks. The final volley of arcane fireworks and burst of colorful smokes.
Then, the announcer's voice boomed across the arena. "The first event: Marksmanship Mastery! All competitors from the non-transcendent event, report to the staging area!"
Jack and his crew simply sat and waited. They had known that non transcendent version of the event would always be done first. It only had two stages: targeting static objects and hitting moving objects.
The top ten rewards for the winners were mostly related to a chance to be transcendent beings. They were either apprenticeships to the royal mystic scholars, scrolls of steamrune acquisitions, or tokens for a suitable eldritch weapon.
The crew watch the non transcendent competitions calmly. It was pretty good. The standard was quite high... for normal people. But all of them were transcendent. What impressed common people were not that amazing for them.
...
A couple of hours passed and the non transcendent competition finally ended. It was time for the transcendent event of Marksmanship Mastery.
Reina, Aella, and Baroness Artheim stood up. Its their time to participate in the tournament.
The baroness adjusted her traveling coat. Her dark blue eyes showed faint traces of static electricity.
Aella grinned without any sign of nervousness. She fixed her round glasses and toyed with her voidfire revolver as she walked to the staging area, following Reina.
"Don't show off too much, Kid!" Jack reminded her. Though his smirk suggested otherwise. "Just show enough to win."
"They'll mock you when they see you, Girl!" Barnaby added. "Just give them a face slap by showing what you can do."
"I'll show them." Aella replied with a mischievous glint in her eyes.
The trio moved to the competitors' zone. A fenced-off area on the arena floor. There were over two hundred participants for the transcendent level.
It was a diverse crowd. Archers with longbows carved from ancient wood... Mercenaries with steamrune guns... Mystic scholars holding thick grimoires... Each of them had their own way of 'marksmanship'. And the competition didn't actually restrict them.
The first stage was simple... hitting seven static targets of different position accurately.
Ten participants stepped forward at a time. High above the arena, massive wooden discs reinforced with iron were suspended by chains.
The first few heats went by quickly. Most of the transcendent participants hit their marks easily. Either by arrows, bullets, or magic spells.
Reina and Baroness Artheim had also passed the first stage with clinical efficiency.
Reina used a pair of steamrune handguns Jack had designed for her. Hitting the seven targets accurately in a record breaking speed.
Baroness Artheim didn't use the steamrune rifle Jack had given her. Instead, she used her primal sorcery. Conjuring seven lightning birds that flew and crashed against the targets. Shattering them into splinters.
Then, it was Aella's turn...
