Chapter 551: Chapter 551: Man-Made Disaster

Melody Summers looked at Elaine Hughes and asked in a cold voice, "In our last life, you all conspired to drug me and hand me over to those gangsters. You must have known what my fate would be..."

"What, am I the only one who can be treated this way? Your precious sons can’t?"

The moment Melody Summers finished speaking, the mournful whimpers coming from Elaine Hughes’s mouth suddenly stopped.

She slowly raised her head, revealing a pair of red, swollen eyes, and muttered, "Last... last life... I..."

Thinking about what happened in their last life, Elaine Hughes couldn’t say another word.

What she had sown in her past life, she was now reaping in this one.

It was the cycle of karma. This was her retribution.

It was as if her soul had left her body. Elaine Hughes just stared blankly up at Melody Summers.

Melody Summers’s face was almost identical to her own when she was young.

This was the daughter she had carried for ten months; they were supposed to be the closest of people, yet how had things escalated to this life-or-death struggle, one that had already cost her the lives of her two sons...?

After a long moment, Elaine Hughes suddenly brought her hands together and began to clap forcefully—CLAP, CLAP, CLAP—all while letting out a loud, booming laugh. "HA HA HA HA!"

She scrambled up from the floor and stumbled toward Melody Summers.

Melody Summers immediately frowned and dodged aside. Having lost her balance, Elaine Hughes fell to the floor again.

Elaine Hughes paid it no mind. She crawled on all fours to Melody Summers, grabbed her shoe, and smiled joyfully like a child as she said, "I know now!... I know now!... I know what to do!"

"Listen to me, I’m going to go and start over. This time, I’ll treat you well. You won’t hate us anymore, okay?"

As Melody Summers stared at her like she was a lunatic, Elaine Hughes scrambled to her feet and said with a deranged look, "I just need to do it one more time... As long as I’m reborn again... Yes... As long as I’m reborn one more time, it’ll be fine..."

’She had already been reborn once, so why couldn’t it happen a second time?’

’As long as she was reborn again, as long as she could go back to the very beginning, as long as she could go back and fix all her mistakes, none of this would have happened! Her own daughter wouldn’t hate her, and her sons wouldn’t have died so tragically!’

At this thought, Elaine Hughes’s heart pounded wildly. She suddenly lifted her head to look at the open window, and a light called hope ignited in her eyes.

Before Melody Summers or Robert Lancaster could react, Elaine Hughes moved in a flash, rushing toward the window. She clambered over the open sill and, without a moment’s hesitation, threw herself out—

Just like that, she jumped from the 16th floor!

It all happened so suddenly that Melody Summers froze for a moment, seemingly not having expected Elaine Hughes to commit suicide so abruptly.

Robert Lancaster, standing to the side, was even more stunned by the scene. He stared wide-eyed in the direction Elaine Hughes had disappeared, his face a mask of utter astonishment.

The room fell so quiet you could hear a pin drop, the only sound being Robert Lancaster’s ragged gasps for air.

One second, two seconds, three seconds...

A moment later, several screams and shouts of alarm drifted up from downstairs:

"AHHH—!"

"Oh my god! Someone jumped!"

"Call the police! Quick, call the police! Someone else jumped!"

The shouts from below pulled Melody Summers back to reality. She snapped out of her brief shock, feeling no significant ripple of emotion.

’It’s just as well that Elaine Hughes killed herself. Saves me the trouble of doing it myself.’

Melody Summers walked over to the window and calmly slid it shut, blocking out the commotion from outside.

Then she turned and looked silently at Robert Lancaster.

Meeting Melody Summers’s icy gaze, the hairs on Robert Lancaster’s entire body stood on end.

Realizing what Melody Summers intended to do, Robert Lancaster shook his head frantically, his face a mask of terror as he stammered, "No... no... don’t... don’t kill me..."

Seeing the sheer desperation to survive written all over Robert Lancaster’s face, Melody Summers found it laughable.

In her past life, the three Lancaster siblings had been detestable, and Elaine Hughes had been chillingly cruel, but in Melody Summers’s eyes, the four of them combined were not as vicious as Robert Lancaster.

Robert Lancaster was the head of the Lancaster Family, the one whose word was law. He stood at the apex of the family hierarchy and was its greatest beneficiary, so he should have borne the responsibility for it. Yet, when the three Lancaster siblings targeted Melody Summers, he had been perfectly content to make himself invisible.

If only he had stepped up to stop the farce, if only he had defended Melody Summers in the slightest, she would never have met such a fate in her past life. Ultimately, it was Robert Lancaster’s indulgence and indifference that allowed Sylvia and Simon to become ever more outrageous. He was the one who had personally sealed Melody Summers’s fate.

In Melody Summers’s view, in this life or the last, Robert Lancaster was the true culprit.

Melody Summers looked at Robert Lancaster and said coldly, "In the last life and in this one, you’ve survived by selling out your own wife and children. Now that your wife and children are all dead, how can you have the nerve to keep on living? You’re the one who deserves to die most of all!"

Robert Lancaster was so terrified by Melody Summers’s words that his entire body went limp. He squirmed backward across the floor, saying with a fawning expression, "...Don’t... I was wrong... Daughter... I’m... your real father..."

Melody Summers paid no attention to what he was saying. She pulled a dagger from her space and advanced on him, step by step.

The dagger in Melody Summers’s hand gleamed with a cold light. At the sight of it, Robert Lancaster’s eyes widened in terror. Cold sweat dripped down his forehead as he watched her get closer and closer.

In his panic, an idea flashed through his mind, and he hurriedly said, "Don’t... don’t kill me! I... I’m still useful!"

Perhaps because death was so imminent and his will to survive so strong, Robert Lancaster’s voice was suddenly less stuttered, his words becoming clearer. "I... I know... what happened later... If you... you keep me... I’ll be... useful to you..."

Melody Summers paused, taken aback. She frowned and asked, "What happened later? What are you talking about?"

Robert Lancaster wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and answered, "Soon... there’s... there’s going to be a pandemic... I... I..."

"Of course I know about the pandemic. I was still alive back then!" Melody Summers cut him off impatiently. "I also know that the water from Sylvia Lancaster’s space could cure the pandemic. You don’t need to tell me any of that!"

In this life, the space belonged to Melody. She was already planning to contact Paige Walsh as soon as the first signs of the pandemic appeared and send her some of the water from her space. That way, Paige could develop a medicine sooner and prevent the pandemic from spreading widely.

Melody Summers was going to do all of that herself; she didn’t need Robert Lancaster to tell her.

"No... that’s not it..." Robert Lancaster said anxiously, gesturing frantically as he spoke. "The pandemic... the water... it... it could only control it..."

Melody Summers frowned and listened to Robert Lancaster’s story. Through his fragmented explanation, she finally learned that after her death in their past life, the remaining members of the Lancaster family had lived on for some time.

During that time, the medical community made new discoveries about the pandemic. They found that the water from Sylvia Lancaster’s space could only control the outbreak in the short term; it couldn’t provide a complete cure.

But that wasn’t the most important part. The most important part was—

Robert Lancaster made a gun shape with his hand and pointed it at his own temple, gesturing as he spoke. "...The pandemic... maybe... maybe it was... man-made... They... they also wanted to... to assassinate us..."

After hearing Robert Lancaster’s words clearly, Melody Summers was completely stunned. She blurted out, "What?!"
