Chapter 531: Chapter 531: Sneak Attack
Chloe Sharp’s words were half-true. The interviewer this time was indeed a very serious woman with a sharp tongue, which made many of the interviewees too nervous to perform well.
But Nina Summers felt nothing when she heard Chloe Sharp’s words.
’She figured it was just a formality anyway. Once the interview was over, they would all go their separate ways, so it didn’t matter what the interviewer was like.’
If she knew the answer to a question, she’d answer it. If she didn’t, she’d say so. If the interviewer yelled at her, she’d yell right back. If the interviewer tried to hit her, she’d run for it.
Many people choose to just give up and stop caring when the outcome is predetermined, and Nina Summers was one of them.
Ever since she learned this was all just a formality, Nina Summers felt exceptionally relaxed in both body and mind.
Perhaps because she had been so tense before, she felt a little light-headed now that she’d relaxed. She started to let her mind wander. Whatever Chloe Sharp said went in one ear and out the other, not affecting her mood in the slightest.
This state continued right up until it was her turn for the interview.
Nina Summers took a deep breath, handed her number to the staff member, and opened the conference room door.
Inside the spacious conference room sat five interviewers. The one in the very center was a young woman in her twenties or thirties. She had ear-length short hair, her brow was slightly furrowed, and her thin lips were pursed, giving her the appearance of someone who was difficult to talk to.
Nina Summers was already prepared to be given a hard time by her, but the woman smiled gently when she saw Nina’s name.
She looked up at Nina Summers and said in a gentle tone, "Hello, I’m the lead interviewer for today. My name is Holly Rhodes..."
...
Meanwhile, after saying goodbye to Joanne White, Melody Summers wandered through the reconstruction zone on her own, holding an umbrella.
’Who would have thought that this place, which had been nothing but a barren, abandoned patch of land on the outskirts of the city two years ago, had now become an oasis of hope in the midst of the flood.’
Staff members came and went, workers bustled about, and a fleet of trucks transported disaster relief food from the planting base to various shelters in the city.
Melody Summers watched the busy figures as she meandered through the area, eventually ending up next to an unfinished construction site.
The place was remote. Seeing no one around, Melody Summers stretched and was about to enter her space to rest for a bit. But unexpectedly, at that very moment, a system notification suddenly exploded in her mind—
[Host! Watch out for a sneak attack!]
As the system’s voice rang out, Melody Summers felt a sudden chill on the back of her neck!
Realizing someone was attacking from behind, she instinctively dove forward. She dodged, albeit clumsily, but because she was wearing flip-flops, she couldn’t keep her footing and stumbled, falling flat on the ground.
Melody Summers didn’t hesitate after hitting the ground; she immediately rolled to the side.
The next second, an iron rod slammed down hard on the spot where Melody Summers had just been lying!
Judging by the force of the rod hitting the ground, the attacker was clearly trying to kill her.
Melody Summers rolled twice on the ground, creating some distance between her and her attacker. Then, she quickly pulled the pepper spray from her pocket, covered her own mouth and nose, and sprayed it directly at him.
"Ah!"
Blasted by the specially formulated spray, the man with the iron rod instinctively clutched his face and let out a wail.
Seeing her chance, Melody Summers didn’t hesitate. She scrambled up from the ground, closed the distance in a few quick steps, and while the man was fumbling in distress from the spray, she snatched the iron rod from his hand, swung it high, and brought it down hard on the back of his neck!
With a dull THUD, the man didn’t even have time to let out a cry of pain before he pitched forward and collapsed, unable to move a muscle.
It had all happened so suddenly. Melody Summers dropped the iron rod and took a few gasping breaths, still shaken.
After calming herself, she kicked the unconscious man on the ground. Seeing no reaction, she bent down, grabbed a handful of his hair, and muttered, "Who the hell is so eager to die that they’d dare sneak-attack me..."
Melody Summers had originally assumed he was a robber who saw she was alone and wanted to mug her. But when she got a clear look at his face, she was surprised to find it was someone she knew—
It was Simon Lancaster!
After getting a good look at Simon Lancaster’s face, Melody Summers almost laughed in anger.
She hadn’t even gone looking for trouble with the Lancasters, yet they were coming to her, one after another!
First, it was Sylvia Lancaster, then Silas Lancaster, and now Simon Lancaster...
’Why are the Lancasters so fond of lining up to die!’
Since Simon Lancaster had delivered himself to her doorstep, Melody Summers wasn’t about to be polite.
She pulled duct tape and rope from her space and tied Simon Lancaster up securely.
Worried someone might pass by, Melody Summers took a flatbed cart out of her space. She heaved Simon Lancaster onto it like a pig being brought to slaughter, then pulled him to an even more secluded corner.
Once she was sure no one was around, Melody Summers kicked Simon Lancaster onto the ground, returned the cart to her space, and straightened his arms, forcing him to lay his bound hands flat on the ground, one on top of the other.
After preparing all this, Melody Summers picked up the same iron rod Simon Lancaster had used to attack her. She aimed it at his hands, took a deep breath, and with all her might, slammed it down!
One second, two seconds, three seconds...
After three seconds, accompanied by a bloodcurdling scream, the previously unconscious Simon Lancaster was jolted awake by the excruciating pain shooting from his wrists.
"AH!—AHH!!—"
"AHHH—!!!"
Melody Summers had used her full strength for that strike. Simon Lancaster felt as if the bones in his wrists had shattered!
Piercing pain spread from his wrists through his entire body. He wailed and writhed on the ground, drenched in a cold sweat.
Watching Simon Lancaster roll around and scream on the ground like an electrocuted maggot, Melody Summers sneered. She took the iron rod and began randomly beating him with it, saying over and over as she struck:
"That’s for attacking me! That’s for attacking me! You bastard, you were asking for death! Let’s see how many lives you have to spare to provoke me!"
Melody Summers’s blows were steady, each one precisely avoiding Simon Lancaster’s vital spots, but she didn’t lessen the force at all. The iron rod made a series of dull THUDS as it struck his flesh.
Simon Lancaster’s hands and feet were bound, leaving him completely defenseless against the beating. All he could do was try to curl into a ball, attempting to lessen the overwhelming pain.
Seeing that Simon Lancaster’s wails were growing weaker, until he couldn’t even scream anymore, Melody Summers finally stopped.
At this point, Simon Lancaster’s whole body was trembling uncontrollably from the pain. His once-handsome face was now ashen, completely drained of color, and cold sweat dripped from his forehead.
Looking at his state, Melody Summers scoffed contemptuously and asked in a cold voice, "Learned your lesson? Still feel like dying?"
Hearing this, Simon Lancaster struggled to lift his head and glare at Melody Summers. He took a deep breath, and through gritted teeth, forced out a sentence despite the pain, "...I... I... I remember everything!..."
"...Everything that’s happened to my family in this life... it’s all your fault!"
