Chapter 196: Chapter 196: Isn’t This Waiting for Death?

"Hmph, so you still care about Dad? I thought you’d forgotten all about him!"

"Sister-in-law, this isn’t the time to argue. If you won’t talk, then I’ll just go in and see Dad for myself!"

After she finished speaking, Miao Cuifen ignored Guo Chunxiang and walked directly into the house. No matter how meek a person might seem on a normal day, they would not remain so when it came to the people they cared about.

It had been this way with Shen Nian’s situation, and it was the same now with her father.

"Hey..."

Indignant at being ignored, Guo Chunxiang was about to go after her and continue her taunts. However, she had barely taken a step before Shen Nian, who was right behind Miao Cuifen, grabbed her arm.

"Aunt Chunxiang, my mother is worried about Grandpa’s condition. As a daughter-in-law of the Miao Family, I’m sure you wouldn’t want to cause a scene while he’s so ill, would you?"

Shen Nian looked at Guo Chunxiang, her eyes filled with a clear warning.

She had no desire to stir up trouble with these bizarre relatives, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t fight back if they targeted her family.

Guo Chunxiang’s eyes widened. ’It’s back, it’s back! That terrifying look I saw in Shen Nian’s eyes last time—it’s back!’

’Good heavens, how did my niece change so much after getting married? She’s like a completely different person. This is terrifying!’

Thoroughly intimidated by Shen Nian, Guo Chunxiang didn’t dare cause any more trouble. Shen Nian and the others entered the house without further incident and saw Miao Dagui lying unconscious on the bed.

"Dad!"

Miao Cuifen burst into tears the moment she saw her father lying on the bed.

"Mom, what on earth happened to Dad?"

Miao Cuifen’s mother, Tian Yilan, had been sitting by Miao Dagui’s bedside, keeping her husband company. When she saw Miao Cuifen crying, she began to cry as well.

How could she not be heartbroken, seeing the man she’d spent her entire life with so ill?

"Sis, Dad’s health has been poor for a long time. He suddenly collapsed, and... he hasn’t been responsive since."

Tian Yilan was sobbing too hard to speak, so it was Miao Cuifen’s younger brother, Miao Changquan, who answered.

Miao Dagui and Tian Yilan had four children in total. The eldest, Miao Changfu, was Guo Chunxiang’s husband. The second, Miao Changshuang, was married to Li Jinzhi. The third was Shen Nian’s mother, Miao Cuifen. The youngest son, Miao Changquan, had been a widower for years and never remarried.

The one answering Miao Cuifen was the fourth child, Miao Changquan. He was also the uncle Shen Nian remembered as the most honest and dependable in the entire Miao family.

"Youngest Uncle, Grandpa’s in this state. Why wasn’t he taken to the hospital?"

Shen Nian asked on her mother’s behalf. If only her eldest uncle’s family had been here, she knew they were capable of not taking their father to the hospital just to save money.

’But there are so many people here now. My second uncle and youngest uncle are both here. Did they really just let my eldest uncle’s family get away with something like that?’

"We did take him, but the doctors said that with Grandpa’s condition, even if we poured all our money into treatment, he wouldn’t get better. They told us we might as well bring him home... at least that would save some money..."

As Miao Changquan spoke, even a big, burly man like him couldn’t help his eyes from reddening.

"But we can’t just wait like this..."

Miao Cuifen had only just begun to speak when the words caught in her throat. ’Not taking him to the hospital, not getting him treatment... isn’t that the same as just bringing him home to die?’

’But the person lying on that bed... that’s my father!’

At this thought, tears streamed down Miao Cuifen’s face.

Watching her mother and grandmother sobbing, Shen Nian felt an unbearable ache in her own chest. If Lu Cheng hadn’t been by her side, tightly gripping her hand and lending her his strength, there was no way she could have remained so calm.
