Chapter 77: 5
The semi finals of the Freshman Tournament were not held in the grand arena. The massive, open air stadium was deemed too public, too chaotic for the final, brutal assessments of the elite students. Instead, the remaining four competitors were escorted deep into the subterranean levels of the Royal Summoner Academy, into a place known only as the Crucible.
The Crucible was a massive, circular chamber carved directly out of the bedrock. There were no enchanted glass windows. There was no cheering crowd. The only spectators were the senior combat instructors, Headmaster Alaric, and a terrifyingly large contingent of the Inquisition. The men in the crimson robes stood on a raised iron balcony that encircled the entire chamber, their pale blue eyes glowing in the dim, flickering torchlight.
Boyd stood in the center of the cold stone floor, his breathing slow and perfectly controlled. He could feel the oppressive, suffocating weight of the Inquisition’s scrutiny pressing down on him like a physical force. They were not just watching the matches. They were actively scanning the ambient mana, searching for any trace of demonic corruption or forbidden magic.
"They are hunting," Set whispered from the dark void within Boyd’s soul. The assassin’s voice was tight with genuine caution. "The red robes possess artifacts that can pierce basic illusions. You must keep my shadows buried deep. If they catch even a single glimpse of the Abyssal Archive, they will execute you on the spot."
"Then we will rely on the iron," Kronos rumbled, the Warlord’s heavy gravity pulsing against the mental gates. "Let them scan your physical density. Let them see the raw power of a Warlord. They will assume you are a freak of nature, a physical anomaly. They will not suspect a Calamity Spirit if you do not manifest one."
Boyd agreed. He locked the gate to the Usurper, sealing the cold, weightless mana away completely. He opened the gate to the Titan King, allowing the crushing, metallic density to flood his muscles. He did not project the aura outward. He kept it contained entirely within his own physical vessel, turning his body into a weapon of solid, unbreakable iron.
His opponent for the semi final match was a noble named Valerius. Valerius was a prodigy of fire magic, a cruel and sadistic youth who had spent the entire tournament burning his opponents to a crisp. His heroic spirit was a massive, multi headed Hydra made entirely of molten lava and roaring flames.
"Match forty five," Instructor Kaelen announced, his rough voice echoing off the bedrock walls. "Boyd versus Valerius. Begin."
Valerius did not waste a single second. He raised his hands, his eyes burning with a manic, destructive light. "Burn this commoner to ash! Incinerate the Heretic!"
The air in the Crucible instantly superheated. The massive Lava Hydra materialized, its three massive heads roaring with deafening fury. The spirit did not charge. It simply opened its jaws and unleashed a massive, continuous torrent of liquid fire directly at Boyd.
The heat was absolute and terrifying. The stone floor beneath the flames instantly turned to slag.
Boyd did not try to dodge. He did not try to hide in the shadows. He simply crossed his arms over his face and braced his legs, channeling the absolute maximum density of the Titan King into his skin and muscles.
The torrent of liquid fire slammed into him with the force of a breaking dam.
The flames washed over his body, completely engulfing him in a blinding inferno. The heat was agonizing, searing his uniform and blistering his skin. But the metallic resilience of the Warlord held firm. His flesh did not melt. His bones did not turn to ash. He stood his ground, a solid pillar of iron in the center of a raging firestorm.
Up on the iron balcony, Inquisitor Malakor leaned forward, his pale blue eyes narrowing in intense fascination. "Look at him. He is not using a magical shield. He is not deflecting the thermal energy. He is simply absorbing it. His physical density is completely unnatural."
"Is it demonic, my lord?" a junior cleric asked, his voice trembling.
"No," Malakor murmured, his sharp features illuminated by the roaring flames below. "Demonic magic is chaotic and corrupting. This is something else entirely. This is pure, unadulterated physical reinforcement. It is almost... ancient."
Down on the Crucible floor, Valerius was beginning to panic. He poured more and more mana into the Lava Hydra, his face pale and slick with sweat. "Burn! Why will you not burn?"
Boyd slowly lowered his arms. His grey canvas uniform was completely incinerated, leaving him bare chested. His skin was blackened and blistered, but the wounds were already beginning to heal, the heavy gravity of the Titan King forcing the damaged tissue to knit back together.
He looked at Valerius through the roaring flames, his dark eyes completely empty of emotion.
"My turn," Boyd said.
He did not run. He simply walked forward, stepping directly through the torrent of liquid fire. The flames parted around his dense, heavy body like water flowing around a massive boulder. Every single step cracked the bedrock floor, the sheer weight of his physical form shaking the entire subterranean chamber.
Valerius stumbled backward, his arrogant confidence completely shattered. He tried to command the Lava Hydra to strike with its massive heads, but the spirit was already fading, its magical anchor drained by the continuous, ineffective assault.
Boyd walked straight through the fading flames and grabbed Valerius by the throat.
He did not squeeze. He did not try to crush the noble’s windpipe. He simply lifted Valerius completely off the ground with one hand, holding him suspended in the air. The physical strength required for such a casual display of power was absolutely terrifying.
Valerius kicked his legs frantically, his hands clawing at Boyd’s iron grip. He tried to cast a desperate, close range fire spell, but Boyd simply flared the gravity of the Titan King for a fraction of a second. The sudden, crushing pressure snuffed out the magical spark instantly.
"Yield," Boyd commanded, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that echoed through the silent chamber.
Valerius stared into Boyd’s empty, dark eyes and saw absolutely no mercy. He saw a predator that could snap his neck with a single twitch of its fingers.
"I yield," Valerius choked out, his voice barely a whisper. "I yield."
Boyd dropped him. Valerius hit the stone floor hard, gasping for air and scrambling backward like a terrified animal.
"Winner," Kaelen announced, his single eye locked onto Boyd with a mixture of deep respect and profound suspicion. "Boyd."
The Crucible remained completely silent. There were no cheers. There were no angry murmurs. The senior instructors and the Inquisition simply stared at the commoner who had just walked through a literal inferno without flinching.
Boyd turned and walked toward the heavy iron doors that led back to the staging area. He ignored the burning pain in his blistered skin. He ignored the intense, suffocating scrutiny of the red robes. He had secured his place in the finals. He had proven that the physical power of the Warlord was absolute.
As he reached the iron doors, a tall figure stepped out of the shadows, blocking his path.
It was Inquisitor Malakor.
The crimson robed man looked down at Boyd, his pale blue eyes glowing with an unnatural, piercing light. He did not speak immediately. He simply stared, his gaze seeming to cut straight through Boyd’s physical body and into the very depths of his soul.
Boyd stopped. He did not bow. He did not avert his eyes. He met the Inquisitor’s gaze with perfect, cold indifference. Within his mind, he reinforced the iron walls around the Calamity Spirits, ensuring that absolutely no trace of their dark mana leaked into the physical world.
"You are a very interesting anomaly, Boyd," Malakor finally said, his voice smooth and incredibly dangerous. "You possess no heroic spirit. You cast no spells. Yet you possess a physical resilience that rivals the ancient titans of myth."
"I train hard," Boyd replied, his voice perfectly level.
Malakor smiled. It was a cold, terrifying expression that did not reach his eyes. "Training does not allow a mortal boy to walk through liquid fire. Training does not increase your physical density to the point where you can shatter solid stone with a single punch. You are hiding something, commoner."
"I am hiding nothing," Boyd said. "I am simply surviving the tournament."
"We shall see," Malakor whispered, leaning closer. The scent of ozone and dried blood clung to his crimson robes. "The Inquisition sees everything. We root out the corruption that hides in the dark. If you are harboring forbidden magic, if you have made a pact with a demonic entity, we will find it. And we will tear it out of you, piece by piece."
Malakor stepped aside, allowing Boyd to pass.
Boyd walked through the iron doors without looking back. His heart was pounding a slow, heavy rhythm against his ribs. The encounter had been incredibly close. The Inquisitor was not a foolish, arrogant noble. He was a seasoned hunter, and he had caught the scent of the abyss.
"That was entirely too close," Set whispered in Boyd’s mind, the assassin’s voice trembling with genuine fear. "His eyes... they carry the light of the old gods. He was trying to pierce the iron walls."
"But he failed," Kronos rumbled, the Warlord sounding deeply satisfied. "The fortress held. He suspects you are an anomaly, but he does not know the truth. We must remain vigilant. The final match is tomorrow. We must crush the blonde noble and secure our victory before the hounds decide to strike.
