Chapter 22: The Deep Vault
The descent into the restricted archives felt like walking into the gullet of a sleeping leviathan. The air grew steadily colder with every step they took down the narrow spiral staircase. The stone walls were slick with condensation and the dim violet light from Silasβs crystal orb barely pierced the heavy oppressive darkness.
Lyra walked beside him. She moved with a quiet confidence that she had never displayed before. The heavy woolen dresses were gone forever. Tonight she wore a sleek gown of dark velvet that allowed her to move freely proudly displaying the jagged burn scar on her thigh with every step. She was no longer a victim hiding in the library. She was the partner of the Shadow Advisor.
They reached the bottom of the staircase. Before them stood the massive circular door forged from dark iron. Glowing crimson runes were etched deep into the metal pulsing with a magical pressure that made the air taste like copper and ozone.
"This door has remained sealed since the Eclipse Conclave first cast the twilight veil," Lyra whispered her voice echoing softly in the damp corridor. "The magic binding it is ancient. It requires the blood of a royal scribe and the original iron key to open."
She reached into the bodice of her velvet gown and produced the heavy iron key. She then pulled a small silver pin from her hair and pricked the tip of her index finger. A single drop of bright red blood welled up. She pressed her bleeding finger against the center rune and inserted the key into the lock.
The heavy iron mechanism let out a deafening metallic groan. The glowing crimson runes slowly faded into a dull lifeless grey. The magical pressure in the corridor vanished instantly leaving behind a profound heavy silence.
With a deep grinding sound that shook the dust from the ceiling the massive circular door swung open.
Silas stepped into the darkness raising the violet crystal orb high above his head.
The deepest vault of the Sunless Throne was not a treasury filled with gold coins or precious gems. It was a vast circular cavern lined from floor to ceiling with thousands of cylindrical leather tubes and ancient bound ledgers. The air inside was incredibly dry and smelled of old parchment and dried ink preserving the fragile documents perfectly.
"The original architecture of the empire," Lyra breathed stepping in beside him. Her sapphire eyes widened with absolute reverence as she looked at the towering shelves. "Every secret this palace was built upon is buried in this room."
Silas walked over to a massive stone table situated in the exact center of the vault. He pulled a thick leather tube from the nearest rack and unrolled the heavy parchment across the smooth stone surface.
It was a master blueprint of the entire palace complex.
Silas leaned over the table his dark eyes scanning the intricate lines and precise measurements. In his past life as a corporate strategist he had spent countless hours memorizing complex organizational charts global supply chains and hostile corporate structures. This was no different. It was simply a physical map of power and vulnerability.
He saw the main corridors the guard barracks the royal chambers and the grand audience hall. But as he looked closer tracing the faint faded lines drawn beneath the primary structures he saw the hidden veins of the palace. There were narrow servant tunnels that ran parallel to the main halls. There were ventilation shafts large enough for a grown man to crawl through. There were forgotten dungeons that had been sealed off centuries ago.
"Look here," Silas said pointing to a specific section beneath the treasury wing. "There is a massive blind spot in the patrol routes. A hollow space exists between the outer defensive wall and the inner vault of House Caligari."
Lyra leaned in close her shoulder brushing warmly against his. She traced the faded line with her ink stained finger her brilliant mind instantly calculating the spatial dimensions.
"It is an old aqueduct," Lyra realized her breath catching in her throat. "It was drained when the twilight veil fell and the rivers dried up. The builders must have sealed the grates but the tunnel itself remains intact. It leads directly into the lower levels of the treasury. Lady Seraphina does not even know it exists because it predates her entire bloodline."
"Knowledge is the ultimate weapon," Silas murmured turning his head to look at her. "When we finally move against the Silk Spider we will not march through the main corridors. We will bleed her dry from the inside out."
Silas turned his attention away from the blueprints and walked toward the ancient ledgers stacked on the lower shelves. He was looking for something specific. He pulled out a heavy book bound in dark green leather and blew a thick layer of dust from the cover. It bore the faded crest of House Caligari. A golden spider weaving a web of coins.
He carried the ledger back to the stone table and opened it. The pages were brittle but the ink was still legible. It detailed the original trade agreements made between the Crown and the Caligari ancestors centuries ago.
"Fascinating," Silas whispered a cold predatory smile touching his lips as he read the dense legal text. "Seraphina derives all her power from her absolute monopoly on the eastern grain shipments. But according to this original charter the monopoly is highly conditional. It requires House Caligari to maintain a standing reserve of grain within the capital walls at all times. A reserve meant to feed the poor in times of famine."
Lyra looked up from the blueprints her sapphire eyes gleaming with sudden understanding. "She does not maintain a reserve. She sells the entire surplus on the black market to fund her private mercenary army. If the Queen knew she was violating the original charter..."
"The Queen would be legally obligated to strip her of the monopoly," Silas finished closing the heavy ledger with a satisfying thud. "And House Caligari would collapse overnight. Their wealth would evaporate and their mercenaries would abandon them."
Silas rested his hands on the stone table. He had the gate manifest proving the embezzlement and now he had the legal precedent to destroy her entirely. But destroying Seraphina right now would plunge the empireβs economy into absolute chaos. He needed to absorb her network first. He needed to steal her spies her merchants and her gold before he finally cut her throat.
"We have exactly what we need," Silas said turning to Lyra. The dim violet light cast sharp shadows across his handsome face. "Lock the vault Lyra. It is time to invite the spider into my parlor."
