Chapter 443: Chapter-443
Even if it defied all known rules, it was true. Elara had slowly, inexplicably fallen for Prince Julian.
Vane looked at the stoic Empress Regent as she finished fastening her cuffs, a sudden, quiet anticipation stirring in his chest. Only time would tell how deeply this roots would grow, and how strong this bond would become. For the first time in his long career, the old physician found himself deeply fascinated. He truly wanted to see what would happen when an emotionless regent fell completely for a prince like Julian.
The ink on Chief Physician Vane’s medical reports was long dry, but the physical contradiction inside Elara’s chest remained entirely unresolved.
She sat at her massive oak desk, the morning sunlight cutting across the endless stacks of tax ledgers, military requisitions, and provincial reports. By all objective metrics, her day should have proceeded with its usual, flawless efficiency. Yet, beneath her ribs, that persistent, localized friction lingered. It was a minor, uncalibrated warmth, but its refusal to dissipate defied the structural logic she had relied upon for twenty-two years.
Vane’s conclusion—that she had "fallen in love"—was an abstract, unscientific hypothesis. Love was an emotional construct, and since she possessed no emotional framework, the diagnosis was mathematically impossible. It was far more likely a rare, undocumented neurological anomaly triggered by a specific, external catalyst.
And that catalyst was currently walking through her door.
Prince Julian entered the office silently. He looked pale, the dark circles under his eyes a testament to the sleepless nights he had endured since arriving in the capital. He wore a simple, dark blue high-collared tunic, his posture slightly guarded, his shoulders tense. He was a variable she had yet to fully categorize.
"You summoned me, Regent?" Julian asked, his voice low and cautious. He stood a few paces from her desk, keeping a deliberate distance.
"Sit," Elara commanded flatly. She did not look up from her paperwork immediately, completing the signature on a grain distribution decree before laying her quill aside.
Julian hesitated, his eyes flicking around the empty room as if searching for a trap, before he took the seat opposite her. He rested his hands on his knees, his knuckles white.
Elara leaned forward, her vacant, glass-bead eyes locking onto his face. She pulled a fresh sheet of parchment toward her and dipped a clean quill into the inkwell.
"We are going to conduct an empirical evaluation," Elara stated, her tone entirely monotone and professional. "Physician Vane has failed to identify the precise physical trigger for a recurring somatic symptom I am experiencing. According to my data, the anomaly only presents itself during specific interactions with you. Therefore, you are required to assist me in isolating the exact variable."
Julian blinked, a look of profound confusion crossing his delicate features. "An empirical evaluation? Of what? Am I being interrogated for something?"
"No," Elara replied, her gaze unblinking. "I am monitoring my internal vitals. We will begin immediately. Command one: Shake your hair."
Julian froze. He stared at her, his lips parting slightly. "What?"
"Shake your hair," Elara repeated, her voice deadpan and literal. "On Tuesday, when you performed that specific physical action in the war room, my heart rate increased by twelve beats per minute. I need to determine if the acceleration was caused by the visual trajectory of your hair or an unrelated atmospheric pressure change. Proceed."
Julian’s face flushed a deep, sudden crimson. He looked at her with a mixture of disbelief and growing humiliation. "Are you... are you mocking me?"
"I do not mock. Mockery is an inefficient use of spoken language," Elara said, her pen poised over the parchment. "I am collecting data. Please comply with the instruction."
Exhaling a sharp, trembling breath, Julian suddenly jerked his head, his soft, dark curls tossing violently before falling back around his face in a messy, disheveled heap. He glared at her, his breathing turning shallow.
Elara sat perfectly still. She pressed two fingers against the pulse point on her left wrist, counting the beats against the steady rhythm of the grandfather clock in the corner. She waited exactly ten seconds, then wrote a brief note on the parchment.
"An increase of only three beats per minute," Elara murmured, analyzing the data. "Statistically insignificant. The physical movement of your hair is not the primary catalyst. We will move to the next recorded instance."
Julian gripped the edges of his chair, his knuckles turning translucent. "Elara, stop this. What is the point of this ridiculous exercise?"
"Command two," Elara continued, completely ignoring his distress as she adjusted her sleeves. "Argue with me about the northern borders."
Julian’s breath hitched. A heavy, suffocating silence filled the room. He stared at her, the confusion in his eyes rapidly curdling into a raw, bleeding ache. "Argue with you? About the borders?"
"Correct. During our previous administrative disagreement regarding the deployment of troops near your homeland, a localized heat radiated behind my sternum. I require a replication of that specific verbal friction to measure the thermal variance."
Julian slowly stood up from the chair. His chest was heaving, his eyes shining with a sudden, uncontrollable brightness as tears gathered at the rims. He looked down at her—at her perfectly smooth, expressionless face, her pristine, unbothered posture, and her clinical, unblinking eyes.
"You are a monster," Julian whispered, his voice cracking under the weight of an immense, exhausted despair. "You really are just a machine, aren’t you?"
Elara kept her hand on her pulse. "This statement is irrelevant to the northern borders. Please focus on the assigned topic."
"I am not a topic!" Julian suddenly shouted, his voice echoing sharply against the stone walls of the office. A single tear escaped, tracing a wet path down his pale cheek. "I am a human being! I left my home, my family, and everything I knew to come here as a political hostage—as an ’asset’, as you so beautifully put it! I am falling apart every single day in this wretched palace, surrounded by your predatory commanders who want to tear me to pieces, and you sit there... counting my heartbeats?"
Elara’s fingers tightened against her wrist.
"You asked me to use simple words," Julian choked out, a sob caught in his throat as he slammed his hands flat onto her desk, leaning in close. His hair fell wildly across his forehead, his face twisted in pure, agonizing sorrow. "So let me make this very simple for you, Regent. I am miserable. I am lonely. And it kills me—it absolutely kills me—that I am forced to depend on a woman who looks at my suffering and sees nothing but a ’malfunction’ in her schedule!"
He broke. The tears fell freely now, dripping onto the dark wood of her desk. He pulled his hands back, covering his face as his shoulders shook violently, his body bowing under the weight of his grief.
Right then, it happened.
The warmth behind Elara’s sternum didn’t just return; it flared with a sudden, violent intensity that completely bypassed her clinical detachment. It felt as though a cold, iron blade had been driven straight through her chest, twisting deeply into the tissue surrounding her heart. The pain was sharp, heavy, and entirely physical.
