Chapter 435: Chapter-434
Elara stood up from her grand chair, her midnight-black velvet gown cascading smoothly around her ankles. Julian rose a split second later, executing his standard, effortless bow. His nonchalant mask was fully restored now; he looked completely relaxed, a slight, lazy smirk touching his lips as he gave her a polite nod of dismissal.
"If you will excuse me, Your Highness," Julian murmured, his baritone voice smooth and entirely devoid of the raw agony from moments before. "I believe the foreign ministry expects me to exchange pleasantries with the Baltic envoys. Wouldn’t want to disrupt the diplomatic timeline."
Without waiting for her reply, he stepped away from the high table, tucking his hands casually into his pockets as he strolled down the side steps of the dais. He moved with a slow, unbothered grace, completely ignoring the sharp, territorial glares directed at his back by the two commanders standing at the base.
Elara watched his silver hair disappear into the sea of glittering silks and heavy furs. The tight, heavy friction behind her ribs had not dissipated. Instead, it felt like an uncalibrated weight, throwing off the internal balance she had spent years perfecting.
"Master," Ken’s low, rough voice broke through her thoughts.
He stepped up onto the dais, his dark leather armor creaking slightly with the movement. His dark eyes were completely stripped of their usual lazy heat, replaced by a fierce, possessive anger that made his jaw rigid. Right behind him, Mahir ascended the steps, his massive, bare-chested frame radiating a volatile warmth that instantly cut through the chill of the high platform. His beast-kin ears were pinned flat against his dark hair, and his long tail gave a sharp, impatient *thwack* against the back of her empty chair.
"The northern prince was standing too close," Mahir growled softly, his golden eyes wide and predatory as he looked in the direction Julian had gone. "His vocal output was causing an adverse reaction in your vitals. Do you require him to be removed to his quarters?"
Ken leaned in slightly, his hand still resting heavily on his sword hilt. "He is forgetting his place, Elara. Clause Twelve was clear. If he needs to be reminded of the boundaries, I can personally escort him back to the eastern wing and ensure he stays there."
Elara looked at them. For the first time, looking at her two most loyal protectors—the men whose marks were currently hidden beneath her severe collar and open linen shirt—did not bring the usual smooth, calculated silence to her mind. Instead, the image of Julian’s bleeding, hollow eyes flashed across her memory, overlapping with the data of her current surroundings.
*He didn’t leave a single empty corner for me, Elara. Not even a small one.*
"No," Elara stated flatly, her voice returning to its rigid, administrative cadence. "Prince Julian’s movements are within his permitted parameters. His interactions with the foreign envoys are necessary to secure the ninety-two percent success metric for the winter trade treaty. Do not interfere with his coordinates."
Ken’s eyes narrowed into sharp, dangerous slits, a flicker of genuine frustration crossing his handsome features. "You are spending an unnecessary amount of processing power on him tonight, Master. He is just a signed contract. We are the ones who secure your perimeter."
"Your perimeter duties are separate from his administrative value," Elara replied coldly, her vacant glass-bead eyes locking onto Ken’s face until the commander reluctantly lowered his gaze. "Maintain your positions at the base of the dais. The banquet is not yet concluded."
Without waiting for them to comply, Elara turned and walked toward the private side exit behind the throne, leaving her two commanders standing in the dim shadows of the platform, their heavy chests heaving with suppressed, territorial fury.
She walked down the narrow, torch-lit corridor that led toward the palace gardens. The cold air from the grand glass doors at the end of the hallway hit her face, but the freezing temperature did nothing to cure the anomaly inside her chest. Her system was looping, repeatedly analyzing Julian’s definition of *belonging*.
To her, the concept of belonging was an absolute legal or physical reality. The empire belonged to the throne; the guards belonged to the military budget; her body belonged to her own physical autonomy, shared only with Ken and Mahir for the purpose of maintaining a stable internal baseline. But Julian’s definition was entirely unmapped. He didn’t want a legal share of her empire, and he didn’t want a physical clause in her registry. He wanted an uncalculated space in her life—a corner where his existence actually mattered to her hardware.
She stepped out onto the snow-covered terrace, her heavy black velvet gown dragging softly against the fresh drift. The winter wind howled across the stone balustrade, swirling stray flakes of white through the dark night air.
Elara pressed her pale hand flat against her sternum, right over her heart. The thumping beneath her palm was steady, but the uncomfortable, tightening pressure remained absolute.
"A physical malfunction is highly improbable," she murmured into the freezing quiet of the garden.
She turned her gaze back toward the brightly lit windows of the grand ballroom, where the music was still playing and where the silver-haired prince was currently smiling his fake, brilliant smile for a room full of strangers. She had designed a perfect, noiseless machine of an empire, stripping away every single variable that could cause an emotional error. But as she stood alone in the cold snow, the Empress Regent had to acknowledge a newly recorded fact: the northern prince was a variable that refused to be put in a box, and his silent breakage was slowly tearing her bloodless system apart.
Elara stood on the terrace for exactly seven minutes, allowing the sub-zero wind to sap the excess heat from her skin. The physical drop in temperature did not resolve the tightening sensation beneath her sternum, but it did slow the processing loops in her brain to a manageable velocity.
When she stepped back into the corridor, her velvet train heavy with a few clinging crystals of ice, she found Ken waiting for her. He had abandoned his post at the base of the dais, his large frame filling the narrow width of the stone hallway. His dark hair was slightly messy, and his leather chest piece rose and fell with a heavy, restless rhythm.
"Master," Ken said, his voice dropping into that dark, velvety purr he used when he wanted to dissolve her administrative distance. He took a step closer, his hand reaching out to capture her waist, his fingers digging firmly into the fabric of her gown—exactly where the dark bruises from the night before were still hidden. "You’ve been out here too long. Your skin is freezing. Let me take you back to the inner chambers. The ministers can handle the rest of the toasts."
Elara looked down at his large hand on her hip. Normally, his touch was a familiar weight, a grounding physical metric that helped her clear the administrative noise of the court. But right now, as his calloused fingers pressed into her waist, her mind automatically pulled up the visual file of Julian’s expression. *"You let them mark you. You let them hold you."*
