Chapter 427: Chapter-426

Julian let out a dry scoff, straightening up and pulling his hands off her desk. He shook his head, a mixture of disbelief and genuine amusement dancing in his ice-blue eyes.

"Manage it independently," he repeated, his tone returning to that smooth, completely nonchalant baritone. "Right. Of course. Why did I expect any other answer from the great Empress Regent?"

He turned around and walked over to a high-hanging basket of orchids, casually poking at a trailing vine. He didn’t look defeated at all; he just looked like a guest who found the palace entertainment slightly unusual but highly amusing.

"You know, back in the North, if a man told his fiancée she was acting like a machine, she’d either throw a wine glass at his head or burst into tears," Julian said over his shoulder, his silver hair catching the bright afternoon light through the glass ceiling. "But you? You just give me a vocabulary lesson on ’administrative efficiency.’ It’s actually kind of refreshing. At least I don’t have to write you any poetry."

Elara didn’t answer. She picked up her silver quill, dipped it into the inkwell, and smoothly returned to writing her guard logs. Her mind was already re-categorizing Julian’s presence from a "potential disruption" to a "stable, low-impact variable." As long as he stayed at this level of casual compliance, his presence in the palace would require zero extra management.

"Master," Mahir’s low voice rumbled from the door, his golden eyes still tracking the prince like a hawk waiting to drop from a branch. "The third cohort’s shift rotation is beginning. Do you require a change of escort?"

"No, Instructor Mahir," Elara said without looking up from her parchment. "The current arrangement is sufficient. Secure the eastern gate logs before the evening bell."

"Understood," Mahir grumbled. He gave Julian one last, pointed glare, his long tail giving a heavy, warning twitch against his leg before he stepped back into the corridor to maintain his post.

Julian casually strolled back toward the glass exit, his hands tucked back into his pockets. He stopped by the door, turning his head to give her one last, lazy smirk.

"Enjoy your administrative efficiency, Elara," he said smoothly. "I’m going to go find that chief engineer and make sure my quarters don’t turn into a desert tonight. See you at the next official script reading."

With a soft click, the glass door slid shut behind him.

Left alone in the quiet warmth of the conservatory, Elara finished her paragraph, her handwriting as flawless and precise as a printed script. The prince was adjusting well to his parameters, her knights were executing their commands, and the palace was running exactly the way she wanted it to. She took a slow sip of her lukewarm herbal tea, completely satisfied with the silence.

The days leading up to the mid-winter solstice moved by with a quiet, predictable rhythm that Elara highly appreciated. True to his word, Julian didn’t try to push her boundaries anymore. He stayed in his designated area, and whenever they crossed paths in the long palace hallways, he would just give her a casual nod or a polite bow, his ice-blue eyes filled with a relaxed, lazy amusement rather than his old, angry pride.

By Wednesday evening, the first heavy snow of the season began to fall over the capital, covering the palace courtyard in a thick, silent blanket of white.

Elara sat at her desk, the soft glow of the desk lamp illuminating a neat stack of winter supply logs. She was currently checking the firewood allocations for the servant quarters, ensuring the distribution metrics were perfectly balanced to prevent any unnecessary waste.

A familiar, heavy stride echoed outside her door, followed by a firm, rhythmic knock.

"Enter," Elara said.

The door swung open, and Ken stepped into the office. He had just finished his evening perimeter check, and a few stray snowflakes were still melting on the dark leather of his shoulder guards. His long hair was slightly damp, and his dark eyes carried a lazy, warm heat the moment they landed on her face. He walked over to the desk, sliding the heavy iron bolt of her door into place with a definitive *click* before approaching her chair.

"The outer walls are completely secure, Master," Ken murmured, his voice dropping into a low, smooth purr that was meant only for her ears. He leaned down, placing his large, calloused hands flat on her armrests, effectively trapping her in his shadow. "The guards have been rotated to the heated stations, and the northern prince is currently asleep in his wing. The palace is entirely quiet."

Elara didn’t lean back. She looked up into his dark eyes, her own face completely blank. "Your timing is efficient, Ken. I have just concluded the final supply logs for the winter rotation."

Ken let out a low, breathless chuckle, his thumb reaching out to gently brush against the sharp line of her jawline. "Forget the logs for tonight, Master. Your skin is cold. Let us warm you up."

Before Elara could reply, the side door connecting to the private training quarters opened, and Mahir stepped into the room. He had already stripped out of his heavy instructor uniform, wearing only a loose pair of dark trousers. His broad chest was bare, his skin radiating a fierce, animalistic heat that instantly cut through the chill of the office. His beast-kin ears were upright, and his long tail was sweeping the carpet in a slow, heavy rhythm that showed his absolute submission.

"The bath is ready, Master," Mahir growled softly, his golden eyes gleaming in the dim lamplight as he walked over to the other side of her chair. He leaned down, his large, claw-scarred hand wrapping firmly around her waist, lifting her from the leather seat with effortless strength. He buried his face into the crook of her neck, his ears twitching happily as a deep, rough purr vibrated through his chest. "Come to bed. You have worked enough for today."

Elara let her head rest against Mahir’s chest as Ken stepped in closer, his fingers unfastening the high collar of her charcoal vest with practiced, unhurried ease.

She didn’t feel a rush of passion, and she didn’t feel a surge of affection. But as they carried her toward the heavy velvet blankets of the inner room, surrounded by the fierce, possessive warmth of her two protectors, the lingering noise of the day completely vanished. The prince was fitting into his cage, the empire was secure, and inside the quiet, dark room, the Empress Regent was entirely at rest.

The quiet warmth of the inner room was abruptly shattered by a loud, frantic pounding on the outer office door.

*BANG! BANG! BANG!*

Mahir froze, his golden eyes instantly widening as his beast-kin ears pinned flat against his head. A low, vicious growl rumbled deep in his throat, his tail thrashing violently against the velvet sheets.

Ken snapped his head toward the door, his lazy smile instantly hardening into a dangerous, lethal scowl as his hand reached toward the bedside where his dagger lay.

No one was supposed to be in this corridor. But Julian had somehow bypassed the outer corridor security, using his high royal status and the new official title Elara had given him to make the lower-ranking palace guards hesitate just long enough for him to walk right past them. He was in an absolute, frantic hurry.
