Chapter 42: Chapter 42 — Reinforcements

They arrived on the sixth day, and Arlen, still favoring his healing ribs but well enough now to be up and about the guild hall, saw them before most of the city did — a small, disciplined column moving through the western gate with a quiet, unhurried efficiency that immediately marked them as something different from the frontier’s usual traffic.

There were five of them, traveling light despite the distance they’d clearly covered, and Arlen understood, watching them cross the square toward the guild hall, exactly why Garrick had needed to reach so far beyond the Ashen Frontier’s own resources.

Their leader was a woman perhaps in her forties, dark-haired, moving with an economy of motion that made even Doran’s practiced readiness look faintly unrefined by comparison. She wore no obvious badge of rank, nothing that announced her authority the way guild colors usually did, and yet the entire square seemed to quiet slightly as she passed through it, adventurers and merchants alike pausing to watch without quite knowing why.

"Capital-sent specialists," Mina murmured, appearing at Arlen’s shoulder as the group approached the guild hall’s entrance. "Word is that’s Commander Vessa Thorne leading them. Rank B, at minimum, though the reports I’ve seen are vague about specifics."

"Rank B," Arlen repeated, turning the number over with a kind of humbled reverence he hadn’t felt since the boundary expedition, staring at a greatstag whose rank had seemed impossibly high at the time. "That’s most of a whole tier above anything the Ashen Frontier’s ever had stationed here."

"That’s rather the point," Mina said dryly. "Garrick doesn’t call in help he doesn’t think he needs."

Garrick met the group personally at the guild hall’s entrance, and Arlen watched, from a respectful distance, an exchange that carried none of the deference he might have expected from a regional Guild Master toward a capital-dispatched commander. They spoke as equals, brief and businesslike, Garrick’s composed authority meeting Vessa Thorne’s own without either seeming to yield ground to the other.

"She’s not here to take over the guild," Reya said, arriving beside Arlen with Dorn and Fennis in tow, all three of them watching the exchange with the same quiet fascination gripping most of the square. "Just the threat itself. Garrick still runs everything else."

"How do you know that?"

"Lyra told Dorn, who told me, who’s telling you." Reya’s usual sharp humor had dimmed somewhat these past days, though it flickered now, briefly, at the small joke. "Word travels fast when everyone’s this on edge."

The specialists were shown into the guild hall’s upper floors within the hour, and Arlen, along with most of Greyhaven’s adventuring population, spent the rest of that day catching fragments of rumor and secondhand account regarding exactly what capabilities Vessa Thorne’s team actually brought with them. A mage among them, apparently capable of large-scale detection magic that could track mana signatures across considerable distances. A scout whose reputation, according to the more excitable tavern gossip, included tracking creatures through terrain most guides considered impassable. Thorne herself, beyond her unstated rank, carried a weapon unlike anything Arlen had seen described in any guild text — some manner of enchanted spear that, if the rumors held any truth, had reportedly ended a Rank 7 threat single-handedly three years prior in a different region entirely.

Arlen found himself thinking, turning the various fragments over with careful attention, of Bram’s old lessons about the world always holding more than any single horizon revealed. He’d believed, once, that Iron Vanguard represented something close to the ceiling of what strength looked like. The wolf pack mobilization had shown him otherwise, gently. Millbrook had shown him the true scale of danger the world could hold. Now, watching Vessa Thorne’s quiet, unassuming competence, he understood, with fresh and humbling clarity, that the ceiling kept rising the further one traveled from a single frontier city — that there would always, it seemed, be someone further along than whoever currently seemed strongest to him.

He was summoned, along with Ilvera — recovered enough now to walk under her own power, though still moving carefully — to a briefing later that evening, called specifically because they were the only two people who’d seen the creature directly and survived to describe it.

Vessa Thorne listened to both their accounts without interruption, her expression giving away considerably less than even Garrick’s had, though her questions, when they came, cut with a precision that made Lyra’s earlier interrogation feel almost gentle by comparison.

"The sound it made," she said, focusing on Arlen specifically. "Describe the exact quality of it again. Not your interpretation. The sound itself."

Arlen did his best, though the memory remained as difficult to properly articulate as it had been the first time. "Low. Resonant, almost like it came from somewhere deeper than its actual mouth. Shaped, though — like syllables, even if I couldn’t understand the language, if it was a language at all."

Vessa’s expression flickered, briefly, something sharp and focused passing behind her otherwise composed features. "That matches a pattern I’ve encountered exactly once before, in a different region entirely, years ago. I’d hoped I was wrong."

"What pattern?" Arlen asked.

"Not something I’ll discuss until I’ve confirmed it properly," Vessa said, not unkindly, though the deflection was firm enough that Arlen understood pressing further would gain him nothing. "For now, understand that this matches the profile of something considerably more significant than an ordinary Rank 5 or 6 threat. I’ll need to survey the site directly before I can say more."

She dismissed them shortly after, and Arlen left the briefing with Ilvera walking quietly beside him, both of them turning over, in their own private ways, the unsettling weight of Vessa’s careful, guarded reaction.

"She’s scared," Ilvera said, once they’d put some distance between themselves and the guild hall’s upper floors. "Didn’t show it much, but I saw it. Whatever pattern she’s talking about, it’s not one she wanted to recognize."

"No," Arlen agreed quietly. "I don’t think it was."

He returned to his own quarters that night with the day’s events settling heavily into him, alongside the resolve he’d written into his journal only days earlier. Get stronger. Properly. Deliberately. Watching Vessa Thorne’s quiet, effortless authority, the sheer gap between her capability and his own two modest abilities had never felt more vast, or more clarifying.

Rank B, and even she’s cautious about what we’re facing, he wrote that evening, the resolve from days earlier sharpening now into something more immediate, more focused. I used to think Iron Vanguard represented real strength. Then I saw the boundary, and understood there was more beyond it. Now I’ve seen someone who makes even Iron Vanguard look like where a journey starts rather than where it ends.

I don’t know yet how far I’ll have to grow before I stop feeling this small in comparison to what’s actually out there. But I understand now, more clearly than ever, that the promise I made myself after Millbrook wasn’t excessive caution. It was simply honest.

Whatever’s coming next, I intend to be ready for it — not tomorrow, not overnight, but eventually, deliberately, one careful step at a time. The same way I’ve built everything else in this life so far.

He closed the journal, the city outside his window settling into an uneasy, watchful quiet, and found himself, despite everything, oddly steadied by the resolve rather than diminished by the scale of what still lay ahead of him.
