Chapter 458: Chapter 238 Zhao Xiue’s Wishful Thinking_1
After midnight, seeking pink.
**...***
Lian Manman heard the news from Lian Yeye. They were in the shop, having just finished their noon meal, the whole family, including Lian Zhizhi, as well as Wu Lang and Xiao Qi who had returned from school for lunch, and of course, Lady Zhao, who stayed to eat at the shop.
Lady Zhang and Lian Shouxin both found it hard to believe, fearing that Lian Yeye had heard wrong.
"Yeye, you didn’t hear it wrong? The Zhao Family really said that?" Lady Zhang asked.
"Aunt Si, I definitely didn’t hear wrong." Lian Yeye nodded in confirmation.
"Oh my," Lian Manman’s eyes swirled, the idea proposed by Zhao Xiue to divide the family, in the view of Lian Shouxin, Lady Zhang, and others, was unthinkable. But upon further thought, it was very much in keeping with the actions of Zhao Xiue and the Zhao Family.
Zhao Xiue wanted to split off from Erlang and live independently, without a penny from the Lian Family, only her own dowry and that house in town.
"Where has it been seen that without the elders dividing up the family, a grandson and his wife want to split off and live separately? And she says she doesn’t want anything, but that house in town, that’s worth a pretty penny." Lian Shouxin said, "If we had known this would happen, last time she came back, the Old Master and Old Mistress should not have taken her in."
Last time Zhao Xiue left the Lian Family for the town, the Lian Family could have detained her, advising her not to come back or else they’d divorce her and let Erlang remarry. But now the situation was different; Zhao Xiue was pregnant with the Lian Family’s flesh and blood. In this era, passing on the family line and continuing the family’s name was considered the most important affair in life and family, and there was a strong sense of bloodline and clan consciousness; the Lian Family would not let someone else take their flesh and blood away.
Zhao Xiue was so bold and confident because of the child in her belly and had thus taken possession of that house in town.
"Why do I feel like Sister-in-law Xiu E had planned all this in advance?" Lian Manman mused.
"What do you mean by that?" Lady Zhang quickly asked.
"Dad, Mom, Aunt San, haven’t you noticed Sister-in-law Xiu E’s been making too much fuss these days?" Lian Manman said, noting that Zhao Xiue was fiesty but also shrewd. She should know well enough whom in the Lian Family she could provoke and whom she couldn’t, and even if she caused trouble, she would know when to stop and keep things within limits.
Making enemies left and right in the Lian Family and even provoking Lady Zhou and her prized daughter Lian Xiuxiu was clearly unwise.
"I’m just guessing that Sister-in-law Xiu E doesn’t seem like someone who could live a tenant farmer’s life." Lian Manman continued to explain, "She moved into the village out of necessity."
After getting pregnant, she deliberately caused provocation, publicizing Lady Zhou’s harsh treatment towards her, swaying public opinion in her favor, and taking the opportunity to make a big fuss and move back to town. Then she used this as a pretext, relying on the unborn child, to lay claim to the house in town, win over Erlang, and propose dividing from the Lian Family.
"That is indeed possible." Lady Zhang and Lady Zhao exchanged a look and nodded in agreement.
"Then why did she humbly beg to come back in the beginning?" Lady Zhao asked.
"Back then, she didn’t have a child yet." Lady Zhang said.
Lian Manman nodded, not having a child was one reason, but another was that people from the Song Family in the county town had come. It was possible she thought that the Lian Family could benefit from the wealth and status of the Song Family. But as it turned out, the Song Family wanted Lady Gu to go to the county town to take care of Lian Huahua, but Old Master Lian refused. Old Master Lian made it clear to Aunt Sun that the Song Family was their own, and the Lian Family was its own, and they didn’t intend to bask in the Song Family’s glory.
After that, there was no further movement from the Song Family.
Did she think her chances of relying on the Song Family were slim, and the life in the old house was too hard, so she firmly decided to grasp what was within reach, aiming to live a carefree life?
After all, Erlang was young and strong and could earn money, no matter what. Zhao Xiue had a considerable dowry from the Lian Family, a hefty dowry of her own, plus the large mansion in town. Starting a small shop without any burdens, close to her parent’s home, what could be a sweeter deal for a young couple?
The fact that the house in town hadn’t sold yet was probably related to the Zhao Family.
What a clever plan Zhao Xiue had!
"The people from Old Zhao’s family said that later on Old Zhao’s family would provide money to allow Brother Erlang and Sister-in-law Xiu E to open a shop in town too. They wouldn’t need to divide the family land to support themselves." Lian Yeye added.
"That house could buy so much land!" Lian Shouxin laughed out of anger, "She wants to split off on her own, can the Second Brother and Second Sister-in-law agree to it?"
"Just now, my grandpa asked Brother Si Lang to go up the mountain to call Uncle Er back." Lian Yeye said.
"After letting Sister-in-law Xiu E leave yesterday, Uncle Er and Aunt Er probably had no idea that she wanted to split the family like this." Lian Manman said.
