Chapter 111: Chapter 106: The Awakening Echo

A heartbeat.

It echoed through every level of the Eternal Archive.

**THUMP.**

The sound was slow.

Ancient.

Powerful enough that the crystal walls vibrated with every pulse.

Far above, the dwarves defending the Grand Chamber suddenly stopped fighting for a brief instant.

Even the corrupted guardians hesitated.

Thargrum tightened his grip around his axe.

"What in the Forge Father’s name was that?"

None of the scholars answered.

Instead, several of the oldest dwarven runes engraved into the chamber walls suddenly began to glow.

One elderly runesmith staggered backward, horror filling his face.

"I know these symbols..."

Everyone looked toward him.

"They’re warning runes."

"What do they say?" another scholar asked.

The old dwarf swallowed.

"They say..."

He could barely force out the words.

"**Do not awaken the One Below.**"

Silence spread across the battlefield.

Then the corrupted guardians roared once more.

The assault resumed with even greater fury.

---

Deep beneath the Archive...

John’s group finally stepped onto the last floating platform.

The moment all four landed together—

Every bridge of light vanished.

The endless maze dissolved into countless particles of golden mana.

The First Warden descended gracefully before them.

For the first time, it lowered its head.

"The Second Trial is complete."

Lythriel let out a long breath.

"I never thought walking would become so exhausting."

Sylvara smiled weakly.

"The bridges weren’t testing our balance."

"They were testing whether we’d trust one another."

Aerion nodded.

"The Heart values unity over strength."

The First Warden spoke.

"Many powerful warriors have reached this place."

"Few passed."

John frowned.

"They failed because they fought alone."

"They failed because they believed only in themselves."

The Warden’s glowing eyes settled upon John.

"You did not."

For a brief moment, the dragon said nothing.

He simply looked toward his companions.

Aerion met his gaze with his usual calm confidence.

Lythriel smirked.

"Told you I’d stab you from the front."

Even now, she found a reason to joke.

Sylvara shook her head, laughing quietly despite the looming catastrophe.

John smiled.

"Let’s finish this."

---

The First Warden raised one hand.

The space behind it shimmered.

A colossal gate slowly emerged from the darkness.

It stood nearly a hundred meters tall.

Unlike every structure they had seen inside the Archive, this gate wasn’t made of crystal.

It was forged from a strange black metal that seemed to absorb light itself.

Across its surface stretched countless golden chains.

Each chain was covered in glowing runes.

Yet several had already darkened.

Black veins spread across them like cracks in ice.

John immediately recognized the corruption.

"It’s reached this place."

The Warden nodded.

"The prison weakens."

Sylvara stepped closer to examine the inscriptions.

Her eyes widened.

"There are names."

John approached.

"What names?"

"The creators."

She slowly read the ancient language aloud.

"The Ancient Dragons..."

"The First Giants..."

"The Eternal Elves..."

"The Celestial Hosts..."

"The Spirit Sovereigns..."

She stopped.

"There are hundreds."

Aerion’s expression grew solemn.

"Every great race."

The realization settled over them.

The prison hadn’t been built by one civilization.

It had required the combined efforts of nearly every race that had ever existed.

An alliance so vast that history itself had forgotten it.

John quietly placed one claw against the enormous gate.

The metal was freezing cold.

Almost instantly—

The runes reacted.

Golden light raced across the surface.

One by one, ancient symbols awakened.

The entire gate trembled.

The First Warden watched silently.

"It recognizes you."

John looked back.

"Why?"

Instead of answering directly, the Warden asked another question.

"What are dragons?"

Lythriel blinked.

"That’s... an odd question."

"The strongest race?" she answered confidently.

The Warden remained silent.

Aerion spoke next.

"Guardians."

Sylvara frowned thoughtfully.

"Keepers of balance."

The Warden looked toward John.

"And you?"

John stared at the glowing runes.

"I don’t know anymore."

The guardian slowly nodded.

"That answer..."

"...is closest to the truth."

---

Without warning—

The gate began opening.

Not because anyone pushed it.

Not because of magic.

It opened because it had chosen to.

The ancient chains loosened.

Massive gears hidden within the walls began turning for the first time in countless millennia.

The sound echoed like mountains grinding together.

Beyond the gate...

There was only light.

Golden.

Brilliant.

Blinding.

John instinctively raised one wing to shield his eyes.

Slowly, the radiance faded enough for them to see.

An enormous underground world stretched before them.

Not a chamber.

Not a cavern.

An entire hidden realm.

Floating islands drifted through the air.

Rivers of liquid gold flowed between crystal forests.

Gigantic pillars connected the heavens to the earth.

Countless waterfalls poured upward instead of downward.

Stars shimmered across a sky that shouldn’t have existed beneath the earth.

Lythriel stood speechless.

"I..."

"What is this place?"

Sylvara whispered almost reverently.

"It’s beautiful..."

Aerion stared toward the distant horizon.

"No."

His voice carried unusual gravity.

"It was beautiful."

The others followed his gaze.

Far away—

The corruption had already arrived.

Entire forests of crystal had turned black.

Golden rivers had become rivers of darkness.

Floating islands drifted lifelessly through the air.

Storms of crimson lightning raged across portions of the false sky.

The corruption was consuming this hidden world from within.

John clenched his fists.

"Cassian."

The Warden nodded.

"He walks at the world’s center."

John looked ahead.

In the distance, towering above everything else, stood an unimaginably massive tree.

Its trunk stretched beyond the clouds.

Golden branches spread across the entire sky like the veins of creation itself.

But nearly half of it had already blackened.

Leaves of light withered into ash.

Dark tendrils crawled upward toward its crown.

Sylvara gasped.

"The Heart..."

The Warden corrected her.

"No."

"It protects the Heart."

John frowned.

"What is it?"

"The World Tree."

Silence followed.

"The last."

---

John’s breathing slowed.

A memory surfaced.

An old tale told by wandering dragons during his youth.

The story claimed that before kingdoms existed, every continent had been connected through a single sacred tree whose roots touched every corner of the world.

Most dragons dismissed it as myth.

Apparently...

It wasn’t.

"The Heart rests beneath its roots," the Warden continued.

"And Cassian is already there."

A powerful gust of corrupted mana swept across the hidden realm.

The golden grass around them instantly withered.

Far away—

Another explosion erupted near the base of the World Tree.

Black light pierced the heavens.

The tree shuddered.

Thousands of glowing leaves fell from its branches like golden snow.

The Warden looked toward John.

"There is no time remaining."

"Go."

John nodded.

He spread his enormous wings.

Dark mana mixed with brilliant golden light around his body.

His companions prepared themselves without hesitation.

Aerion’s silver aura blazed brighter than ever.

Lythriel spun her spear before pointing it toward the distant World Tree.

Sylvara summoned dozens of glowing magical circles that orbited around her.

John looked at them.

"This ends today."

"No matter what waits beneath that tree..."

"We stop Cassian."

His companions answered as one.

"Together."

With a mighty beat of his wings, John shot into the sky, leading his friends across the hidden realm toward the dying World Tree.

None of them noticed the First Warden watching from the gate.

The ancient guardian slowly removed its crystal helmet.

For the first time in thousands upon thousands of years, its expression showed both hope... and fear.

It looked toward the heavens and spoke words no one else heard.

"Great Dragon King..."

"May your descendant succeed where even the Primordials could not."

Then, deep beneath the roots of the World Tree, a pair of colossal crimson eyes slowly opened in the darkness.

A second heartbeat echoed through the prison.

This one was louder than the first.

And somewhere in the abyss, something ancient began to laugh.
