Chapter 235: Chapter 233: Good Night, Creditor
"Now you get it," Xue Rui said.
He didn’t know what it was, but every time he called the young woman by her nickname, it was as if he was the only one left in her eyes. She would agree to even the most unreasonable requests.
’It’s like... a kind of bottomless indulgence.’
How could he call her that every day under these circumstances?
"Normally, I only call her by her nickname when I need a favor from her," Xue Rui said.
"Ah..." Yu Minlan stretched lazily and went into the room to help Lin Ruoxi clean up. Two people were much more efficient at putting on the bedsheets.
Lin Ruoxi was completely wrapped around Xue Rui’s finger. Or, to be more accurate, it wasn’t that he had her wrapped around his finger—it was all voluntary on her part...
Xue Rui didn’t take advantage of his privilege to toy with Lin Ruoxi; he would even hesitate before calling her by her nickname.
The young woman meticulously inspected the room, confirming that the mattress was spotless before putting on the sheets. She also put the pillowcase on for Xue Rui and even checked the windows, the door, and the space under the door.
"What are you looking for?" Yu Minlan asked.
"Xue Rui doesn’t like little bugs. I need to get them all out," Lin Ruoxi said, wrapping a bug in a cloth and releasing it out the window.
When Yu Minlan saw the bug with its countless tiny legs, she immediately broke out in goosebumps and moved a little farther away from Lin Ruoxi.
"Oh, it’s a house centipede. They’re beneficial insects," Lin Ruoxi said as she started wiping the windows.
’It’d be nice to have someone like that around,’ Yu Minlan thought, ’someone who can catch bugs for me.’
"Yu Minlan, what’s with this place? Why are there cockroaches on the twelfth floor?" Xue Rui yelled from the living room.
A huge, winged cockroach had just flown past his face, and he’d nearly thrown his phone.
Hearing this, Lin Ruoxi hurried out. She saw a huge bug on the floor, raised her foot, and stomped it dead. She then got a tissue to cover the poor thing like a white funeral shroud before gently sweeping it into the trash can.
"You’re afraid of bugs?" Yu Minlan glanced at him with a hint of disdain.
Cockroaches didn’t exist in Hedong. Having stayed in Guangdong Province for so long, she had seen her fair share. Near restaurants, you could even find cockroaches running all over the streets. To her, it was nothing unusual anymore.
She recalled the first time she had seen a cockroach; she’d been startled too.
Xue Rui shrugged. "It’s not that I’m scared, I just feel... uncomfortable all over."
"So you are scared," Yu Minlan said, crossing her arms.
"You’re right. I’m scared, alright?" Xue Rui couldn’t be bothered to argue with her.
Xue Rui looked at Lin Ruoxi and asked, "Aren’t you scared?"
The young woman had grown up in the countryside and seen all kinds of bugs, but this should have been her first time seeing a cockroach.
Lin Ruoxi nodded. "A little."
She had only been thinking that any bug that scared Xue Rui had to be dealt with. Now that she thought about it, she was still a little afraid of unfamiliar insects.
After getting rid of the bug for Xue Rui, she placed the laptop in front of him, set a glass of water down for him, and then turned to start cleaning the other room and the kitchen.
Watching this made Yu Minlan feel uneasy. She was a lazy person by nature, but with Lin Ruoxi being so diligent, she felt too embarrassed to just flop onto the sofa like Xue Rui. She could only follow behind and pretend to be busy, which made her feel a little better.
Meanwhile, Xue Rui was chatting with his classmates. Many of them were staying up all night waiting for the test scores to be released, their QQ avatars all lit up.
Qiu Mengze was video chatting with Xue Rui using a low-quality webcam at the internet cafe. He even turned the camera around to show the scene at the cafe.
Xue Rui saw many familiar classmates in the video. It seemed they were all using "checking their scores" as an excuse to pull an all-nighter at the internet cafe.
"Brother Rui, where’d you go? Why didn’t you come for a five-stack at the cafe?" someone shouted into the camera, greeting Xue Rui.
Just then, the cafe manager noticed Qiu Mengze’s exaggerated movements and snapped, "Don’t yank the webcam off!"
"You got it, boss." Qiu Mengze turned the camera back to himself and said, "It’s a real shame you’re not here. You have no idea what we ran into today..."
Qiu Mengze told Xue Rui about his experiences at the internet cafe and how much fun he was having.
As Xue Rui listened, he actually felt a hint of envy...
’This is what youth is all about.’
’But I already experienced it in my past life, so there’s nothing to regret.’
Xue Rui chuckled. "Why would I regret anything?"
As he spoke, he switched his phone to the rear camera and pointed it at Lin Ruoxi. The tall young woman was tidying up the room.
Qiu Mengze quickly turned his monitor toward himself and said through gritted teeth, "You bastard! I’m so damn jealous!"
He was still trying to figure out an excuse to give his mom for staying out all night, and here was Xue Rui, already living with Lin Ruoxi!
This was a competition on a completely different level. An all-nighter at an internet cafe versus living with a beautiful girl?
He cleared his throat twice. "Gotta go. My match is starting."
Xue Rui sent a message to Gu Muxue: Muxue, staying up to check your scores?
That girl, Gu Muxue, had seen her grades drop significantly in this life. She definitely wouldn’t make the provincial top fifty, so her score wouldn’t be hidden.
Gu Muxue: [Pouting] I’m not checking. You shouldn’t either. Go to bed early.
She didn’t think there was any point in checking. The score was set the moment the exam ended; a few more minutes wouldn’t make a difference.
Besides, they had already decided on the city they were going to a year ago.
She even hoped her score would be a little lower. What if it wasn’t enough for Changjiang University? Wouldn’t that mean she might slip into the same school as Xue Rui?
The only problem was that Old Gu was going to be watching her like a hawk when she filled out her university application. He had even called her a while ago, and from the sound of it, he seemed very unhappy with Xue Rui.
Xue Rui replied: That’s the confidence of a top student.
When Gu Muxue saw this message, her thoughts subconsciously turned to Lin Ruoxi.
’It all depends on who you’re comparing me to,’ she thought. ’Compared to Lin Ruoxi, what kind of top student am I?’
But right now, she was more concerned about what was going on between her dad and Xue Rui.
Gu Muxue asked: What happened between you and my dad?
’Typing is so inefficient,’ Xue Rui thought. He walked out onto the bedroom balcony, planning to video call Gu Muxue and explain what happened that day. ’I really didn’t do anything!’
He had just run into Gu Qingshan at a clubhouse, that was all.
’Hmm... would Gu Muxue misunderstand Gu Qingshan?’
He decided to come up with a good excuse, one that would be beneficial for both him and Gu Qingshan.
But Gu Muxue didn’t pick up. Instead, she replied: My grandma is telling me to go to sleep. I’m secretly chatting with you from under the covers [Grinning].
She found this sneaky feeling to be quite thrilling...
Gu Muxue: Go to sleep early, Xiaorui. The morning tea in Guangdong Province is famous, you know.
Xue Rui: It’s no fun to eat alone. You can treat me.
Gu Muxue: I’ll treat you. Good night.
Xue Rui: Good night, creditor.
Looking at the words on the screen, Gu Muxue blushed, hugged her blanket, and rolled around on her bed a few times.
Xue Rui still remembered that he owed her 100,000 yuan.
Back when Xue Rui had no pocket money, she could act all generous and well-off. But now that he was so rich, he still talked to her the same way he always had.
The fact that Xue Rui hadn’t paid her back put her at ease. It was as if they were forever frozen in a special kind of relationship, unaffected by the outside world.
Xue Rui went back to the sofa to play on the laptop. He wasn’t actually that concerned about the scores; he just wanted to watch the young woman bustling about in the living room.
Even though they were only staying here temporarily, the girl was diligently cleaning every inch of the apartment.
He leaned back on the sofa, a sense of peace washing over him, and called out lazily, "Don’t cook tomorrow morning. We’ll go out for morning tea."
As soon as he said that, his eyelids grew heavy, and he fell into a deep sleep.
"Mm," Lin Ruoxi replied.
Yu Minlan felt utterly exhausted. She had never realized there were so many places in a room that needed cleaning—the tops of cabinets, dust on the doorframes...
Lin Ruoxi had been traveling all day, and then spent so long shopping in the afternoon. Wasn’t she tired?
She couldn’t help but sigh. ’Youth is a wonderful thing. So full of energy.’
However, she glanced over and saw the "youthful" Xue Rui already sprawled out asleep on the sofa.
"They’re both young. Why is there such a huge difference?" Yu Minlan frowned.
She and Lin Ruoxi were busy working, and Xue Rui just fell asleep like that?
’And he just said he was going to wait up for the scores.’
"Shh~" The young woman quickly put a finger to her lips.
When Lin Ruoxi saw that Xue Rui had fallen asleep, she immediately stopped what she was doing, washed her hands, covered him with a small blanket, and turned the air conditioner up a few degrees.
After taking care of everything for him, she tilted her head, watching him. She gently slipped his phone from his hand and plugged it in to charge.
"Sister Yu, please be a little quieter when you shower later," Lin Ruoxi whispered.
"Oh," Yu Minlan whispered back.
The young woman walked barefoot across the floor without making the slightest sound.
Yu Minlan followed her example and took off her shoes, but as she walked past a table, she clumsily knocked over a stainless steel basin.
CLANG!
A huge noise echoed through the room. Yu Minlan’s heart skipped a beat. ’It’s over. My life is over.’
She wore an expression of utter despair, her brow tightly furrowed.
She turned around slightly and saw that despite the loud noise, Xue Rui had merely rolled over, kicking the small blanket off.
Yu Minlan instantly breathed a sigh of relief, panting heavily.
She couldn’t understand it. Xue Rui was sleeping like a log, so why did Lin Ruoxi have to be so quiet?
Lin Ruoxi pouted, walked over, and covered Xue Rui with the small blanket again.
Although Lin Ruoxi didn’t say anything, Yu Minlan was suddenly struck by a pang of guilt. When she showered, she deliberately kept the water pressure very low to minimize the noise.
The next morning, Xue Rui was woken by his phone’s alarm. He reached for it, but the phone wasn’t there.
’For a scumbag like me, the contents of my phone are not for public viewing! Where is my phone?’
He groggily opened his eyes and saw the young woman bringing his phone over to him.
Xue Rui turned it on and saw the battery in the top-right corner was full.
’In other words, my phone was in the girl’s hands all night?’
He hadn’t had a chance to change his passcode yet. If the girl had looked through it...
...he was finished.
’I have to change my passcode,’ he thought. ’But to what?’
’My own birthday? The young woman would guess that. Not very secure...’
’What about the young woman’s birthday?’
’Then how would I explain that if Gu Muxue asks?’
’Gu Muxue’s birthday? The young woman isn’t that stupid; she’d find out sooner or later...’
In the end, he decided to change the passcode to his mom’s birthday.
"The Peking University admissions office is calling," Lin Ruoxi said with a frown.
