Chapter 653: Chapter 2: Wan Chu’er vs. Jiang Kechu
Wan Chuer frowned at him. She didn’t recognize this person. Judging by his flashy outfit and the way he spoke, he surely wasn’t a good person.
"Mind your own business!" She looked him up and down, threw out a remark, and turned to leave.
The man was incredulous at Wan Chuer’s words, laughed harshly, and shouted, "Kid, are you even eighteen yet? Messing around outside every day, does your mom know?"
My mom?
Wan Chuer hesitated for a moment, ignored him, and continued walking forward, soon leaving the street of Heavenly World.
By the end of September in the Northern region, the nights were already quite cold. The twilight streetlights flickered over the hurried pedestrians, making the chill feel even sharper.
Wan Chuer walked forward in dejection, and before she knew it, she was at the gate of the Glass Factory Family Quarters.
She stopped at the entrance and frowned, wondering how she ended up back at home.
If Bai Zhixi saw her return, she would definitely try to convince her to go back to school, and the two of them would definitely start arguing again.
Annoying!
She didn’t want to see Bai Zhixi’s weathered face, didn’t want to hear her incessant nagging, and didn’t want to stay in that cramped and shabby home.
Wan Chuer hesitated at the entrance, considering whether to return to Heavenly World to find Lu Tou and the others. Lu Tou’s family owned a mine and had a place where friends often stayed overnight when they didn’t go home.
Just then, a sharp shout came from inside.
"Chuer, Wan Chuer!"
Wan Chuer looked up, only to see it was their next-door neighbor Aunt Ma, who appeared distraught and pitifully fixated on her, then rushed over hastily.
What’s going on? Wan Chuer wondered.
Aunt Ma quickly reached her side, grasping her arm tightly, almost as if afraid she would run away.
"You ungrateful child, where have you been?!" Aunt Ma scolded her tearfully, quickly drawing the attention of others in the family quarters. Their expressions weren’t good, tinged with pity.
Wan Chuer had a bad feeling rise in her heart. She frowned, glared at Aunt Ma, and asked, "What’s going on?"
"What’s going on?" Aunt Ma raised her other hand, patting her shoulder and body repeatedly as she cried and scolded:
"You ungrateful wretch, where have you disappeared to? How could you be so heartless? That’s your mother! Your mom worked hard for you every day, going out early and coming back late, mending shoes in the cold wind. You never paid attention or cared, always staying out."
"Oh Xiao Bai, how could you be so unfortunate? You’re gone, and what will happen to Miss Chu now!"
"Miss Chu, your mom is gone, she collapsed to the ground just as it got dark today. Kind people carried her home, but she stopped breathing. She didn’t even get to wait for you, didn’t even leave you a word."
"What will you do from now on!? Miss Chu, can’t you see to spend some time with your mom? If only you were at home..."
The surrounding neighbors were also chiming in, but Wan Chuer couldn’t hear a thing. She couldn’t feel Aunt Ma’s forceful patting on her body either, just stared at Aunt Ma, watching her mouth move as her mind buzzed.
Her mom is gone?
Bai Zhixi stopped breathing?
How is that possible!!!
Wasn’t Bai Zhixi just persuading her to return to school? Wasn’t Bai Zhixi always lecturing her to live a steady life? Didn’t Bai Zhixi always nag her about what she wanted to eat? Bai Zhixi also said...
Suddenly, Wan Chuer pushed Aunt Ma away with all her strength, then dashed toward her home.
Aunt Ma was shoved and stumbled backward a couple of steps before being caught by the people around. Seeing Wan Chuer run home, she also started running, followed by a few concerned neighbors from the courtyard.
The door to her home on the second floor was open, with two middle-aged people standing outside conversing. Without stopping, Wan Chuer rushed past them into the house, then came to a sudden halt!
In the usually empty living room stood a board supported by chairs, and on the board lay a person covered tightly with a grayish-white cloth.
She had seen a scene like this before. When she was little, an elderly person in the compound died; she and Bai Zhixi went to pay respects, and the deceased elder was just like this, covered with a white cloth, lying in the living room.
Wan Chuer stared blankly at the figure in front of her, too afraid and unwilling to take another step forward.
Aunt Ma quickly caught up, greeting the two people at the door: "Director Lei, Director Jia, Xiao Bai’s daughter is back."
