Chapter 1284: Chapter 1283: Stop Trying to Provoke Me with Your Words

"What do you think?"

Valentina had already been unhappy with the way Jenny York had asked her out to talk. Now that she heard what the other woman said, her displeasure only deepened. Just now she’d kept her irritation to herself, but at this moment it was clearly written all over her face.

Jenny wasn’t blind, and she wasn’t deaf either. She could see Valentina’s dissatisfaction perfectly clearly, and she could hear it just as plainly. But right now she couldn’t care less. "I think you’re deliberately playing dumb with me."

She’d actually wanted to say the latter, but she was afraid that saying it out loud would provoke the other woman. She hadn’t achieved her goal yet; she couldn’t just run her mouth and piss this woman off. This woman was the only person she could work with at the moment.

"You guessed right, I am deliberately playing dumb with you." Valentina didn’t bother circling around with Jeanne and directly admitted she’d been pretending to be confused on purpose. She paused, then added, "You want me to team up with you to go after Lily Turner, don’t you? But what do I get out of doing that with you?"

She set the little spoon in her hand into the cup, straightened up, and leaned back in her chair. She stared unblinkingly at the woman sitting opposite, waiting to see what kind of pitch the other would try next.

Jeanne was stumped for a moment; she really hadn’t thought that far. But she didn’t leave the other woman waiting long. "The benefit is obviously that you get to win back the man you love."

That should be a huge temptation for this woman. She didn’t believe this woman would just stand by and do nothing while the man she loved was stolen away.

"You really think I can win him back?" The corners of Valentina’s mouth lifted ever so slightly, but her eyes were still fixed on the woman across from her without so much as a blink.

Hearing that, Jeanne blurted out, "Of course you can."

She answered so fast it was like the words had been sitting on the tip of her tongue.

"But I don’t think I can. If I could, I would’ve taken him back three years ago. Why would I have waited until now?" Valentina was speaking the plain truth, straight from her heart. If she’d been able to take him back, she would’ve done it more than three years ago, on the day of Easton Holmes and Lily Turner’s wedding.

Hearing Valentina say that, Jeanne immediately panicked. "Just because you couldn’t three years ago doesn’t mean you can’t now. You’re backing down without even trying. I think you’re going to regret it."

In her eyes, the woman across from her was just chickening out. She couldn’t allow that to happen. If this woman backed out, what was she supposed to do?

"I’ll only regret it if I try. Stop trying to provoke me; that trick doesn’t work on me. I’m not going to team up with you to take revenge on Lily Turner." Valentina was not some naive person who’d never been through anything, nor was she an idiot who could be sweet-talked by anyone. She’d seen through Jeanne’s intentions from the start; she’d just chosen not to call her out.

She no longer wanted to keep circling around with her, because she’d already figured out exactly what the other woman was after. She wouldn’t go along with her to do something stupid; three years ago she’d already seen through a lot of things.

Jeanne grew even more anxious. She had thought she and Valentina would hit it off right away. What she hadn’t expected in a million years was that not only did Valentina not agree with her, she even turned her down flat. Jeanne really couldn’t accept that outcome.

"I promise you won’t regret it. Lily Turner is nothing compared to you. Easton Holmes will definitely come to his senses and make up with you. Trust me, I keep my word." In order to get Valentina to cooperate with her, Jeanne didn’t hesitate to make promises she herself didn’t even believe.
