Chapter 90: Ch 89: Shackles
Seraphina looked nervous as she asked that question. She kept playing with her thumbs while looking away.
Honestly, her proposal was not a bad one, and it would be good for her development if Kael were to take her. But his instincts were telling him that it would be best if he separated her and Roku.
"How about I take you with us next time? I want to get close to Roku alone this time so that I can help him settle in faster. Besides, didn’t you heal a lot of people yesterday? You should be resting and recovering today."
Kael reminded Seraphina, and she made a sound of understanding. But her eyes were sharp and told Kael that Seraphina did not like this outcome.
Her attachment was worrying but not urgent enough for Kael to drop everything and focus on her. Her slight glare, on the other hand...was worrying.
Seraphina caught herself immediately and changed her expression, but Kael had already caught her looking worried and annoyed with him.
This was something he would need to work through with her later.
For now, he had a kid to look after.
__________
"That Kael is a fool. He knows that the ’kid’ he brought back is dangerous. But he refuses to see reason and send that kid back. Ugh, he’s going to send me to an early grave with all this worrying."
Leon complained as he ate his food.
Kael had already left a while ago with Roku, leaving the others behind, and Leon’s agitation had started not long after.
"Leon, don’t say such things about Kael. He must have a reason for wanting to help that kid. And honestly, even if that kid has a problem, does it matter? We all have our share of problems we need to work through, right?"
Iris asked, trying to be the voice of reason. But worry and doubt clouded even her expression as she kept looking at Kael’s empty seat.
Her expression was filled with concern and longing, which annoyed Seraphina even more. But she needed to tolerate this woman if she wanted Kael to allow her to live in his house.
"Tsk, I wouldn’t be half as agitated if Kael had really brought back a kid with problems. But that thing is not a kid. It’s barely even human. Having such a ticking time bomb around will get Kael killed."
Leon was not one to exaggerate things. If he was saying all this, then it must have merit.
But the real question was...
"Let’s just say that you are right and that Kael is in trouble...what can we even do about it? It’s not like we can just kill that kid and tell Kael that we did it for him. Be willing to accept that reason."
Iris pointed out, and silence filled the area.
Leon seemed to have a lot of thoughts, and Seraphina had a feeling that most of them could not be said in polite company. But somehow, she did not feel disappointed. Instead, she felt like this was an opportunity.
Sigh
"We are not going to get anywhere like this. Let’s just practice for now. That way, we can stop any accident as soon as it happens."
Iris made up her mind and left the table. But Leon scoffed at her actions and turned to look at Seraphina.
"What are you going to do, Seraphina? Are you going to remain neutral as well? Or choose to take action?"
Leon asked, and Seraphina felt conflicted.
"I...I..."
On one hand, she wanted to drag the kid down and reclaim her seat beside Kael. But at the same time, Kael had asked her to look after Roku, and she wanted to honor his words....
"I understand. Don’t worry, I won’t hold this against you. It is only natural for you not to want to help me since Kael appointed you as Roku’s temporary guardian."
Leon showed an understanding side, but instead of feeling relieved, Seraphina felt even worse. She felt like she was betraying Kael in some way by even listening to Leon.
But at the same time, she really wanted to help Leon out with his plan.
Leon was sharp, and he noticed her hesitation. And he decided to make use of it.
"Seraphina, can you do me a favor? Don’t worry, it is not a big one. I just need you to keep Iris busy tonight. Do you think you can do that much for me?"
It was easy to see that Leon was up to no good. Lyra seemed to be in on it as well, as the small beast let out a yelp and looked at Seraphina with widening eyes.
This seemed too much for Seraphina, and she found herself agreeing to their request.
"Fine! I will help you out."
She yelled, knowing that she had just fallen into their trap.
Seraphina knew that she was being used by Leon and Lyra this time. But she did not mind as much as she thought she would. And there was a simple reason behind this.
It was because Seraphina shared their view regarding Roku.
That kid needed to go.
’I should feel guilty for wanting to ruin a kid. But I cannot make myself feel guilty about this. I feel like I have been corrupted by something...’
’But is that so bad? These shackles are what’s holding us back from claiming Kael and being with him. Don’t think about it and cross the line. We don’t owe this world anything.’
Seraphina felt burdened, but the more she listened to her inner voice, the more she felt like it was right.
This world was just shackling her to her role, and it was holding her back. It used to feel so large and intimidating...but that was before she met Kael.
’We will go back to that dark world if we lose Kael. You don’t want that, right? Then let’s make sure we always have Kael in our grasp.’
Seraphina felt like she was losing her mind. But that voice was making more and more sense by the second.
It was almost as if that voice was her repressed self, coming out to finally claim what it had lost.
