Thirty-seven minutes from the first team’s entry into the relay station to the moment when the operation stopped being clean, which was the moment Sergei’s runner arrived at the staging position with the expression of someone who had covered ground at pace and had not slowed in the final approach because slowing would have cost seconds and seconds were the denomination the current situation was denominated in.

Hans had been reading it.

Amari had spent time looking at the building from above.

For the general reason that he had been looking at Order facilities from every available angle since the Veth operation, because the Veth operation had demonstrated what above-angle observation produced in terms of information that conventional approach-angle observation did not produce, and the demonstration had changed the observation practice rather than remaining as an isolated lesson.

This was the first time the changed practice had produced something the operation required.

He came through the hatch into the building’s upper corridor with Cassi on his left in the quality that her presence at his left shoulder had acquired over the months, which was the quality of something structural rather than positional, her lateral perception running at full engagement in the way it ran when the environment was the most demanding kind, the kind where everything was the variable rather than the specific variables that planning had designated.

He went into the three soldiers with Cassi beside him, and what followed lasted forty seconds and produced the outcome that was required, the three soldiers in the condition of people who had been managed out of the situation by someone who had arrived through the access point their positioning had been designed to observe and who had arrived faster than the observation had been designed to account for.

The corridor held its specific quality afterward, the stillness of a space that had recently been the location of something that was not stillness.

Amari moved toward the staircase.

Varro was already moving.

The northwest exit’s frame was, in the event, in worse condition than the installation records suggested, which was the specific quality of building infrastructure that had been documented at the time of assessment and had continued aging since the assessment, the documentation reflecting a prior state rather than the current one. Amari held this.

"Not the same conclusions," he said. "The same register. The level at which the operational pattern is visible as a pattern rather than as a sequence of individual operations." He paused, the honest interval of the thought arriving at its precise form. "He was reading the sequence of individual operations and arrived at the pattern. I have been inside the pattern without reading it as a pattern because I was the one producing it."

Varro looked at him from across the table with the expression of someone who had been through enough operations to understand the distinction between the person inside the system and the person reading the system, the distinction being the distinction of perspective rather than capability, the outside view producing the pattern’s visibility that the inside view could not produce because the inside view was the pattern’s generating condition.

"The question," Cassi said, "is whether the pattern changes."

"The pattern has to change," Amari said. "But changing it in the obvious direction produces a new pattern, and the new pattern becomes visible by the same method the old one became visible." He looked at the table’s surface. "The question is not how to change the pattern. The question is how to operate without a pattern while the pattern appears to continue."

The room held this.

Fenn, who had been quiet since the delivery, looked at Amari with the expression of someone who had been tracking the conversation’s direction and had arrived, in the tracking, at a question that the conversation had not yet addressed. "How do you learn to operate without a pattern," he said, "when pattern is what makes the operations work."

Amari looked at him.

It was a good question. It was the question that the Halveth operation had produced at its deepest level, the question beneath the sealed exits and the multiple positioning and the two names. He held it in the specific space of things that required more than the debrief’s table to fully answer, things that required the kind of time that the war’s pace did not consistently provide.

"You study the person who reads patterns," he said. "Until you can read them the way he reads them. Then the pattern you’re operating without is visible to you before it’s visible to him."

He said it in the tone of a conclusion that had arrived through the debrief rather than before it, the specific quality of understanding that the honest sequential account produced rather than the understanding that the prior management of the event would have produced.

The debrief concluded in the form that debriefs concluded in when the essential work was done, the table’s participants moving into the separate functions that the post-debrief phase required, the dispersal of people who had assembled for a specific collective purpose and were now returning to their individual ones.

Amari stayed at the table.

He looked at the documents.

Hans had been teaching him this since the textile shop.

Not deliberately, not in the specific way that Godfrey had taught Conrad across the war room’s evenings or the way that Voss had been teaching Amari since before the Liberators had a name. He was not angry at Hans.

Hans did not know that he was teaching Amari.

He was not trying to teach Amari. He was trying to win a war, which was his specific function in the specific conflict, conducted with the specific quality of his specific mind across the specific circumstances that the declared war had produced. The teaching was the byproduct, the thing that Amari was extracting from the opposition rather than the thing the opposition was offering.

This was, Amari understood in the farmhouse kitchen with the documents and the winter light, the form that learning took when it came from someone who would not offer it voluntarily.

You took it from the way they moved.

You took it from the shape of the response they designed and the quality of the thinking the response expressed and the specific decisions about what to record and what to not record and how the recorded things were arranged relative to each other.

You took it from the sealed exits and the multiple positioning and the degraded frame that the mechanism’s specifications had not accounted for, the gap between the documented state and the current state being itself a lesson about the relationship between recorded information and actual conditions, the gap being the lesson because it was the gap that the operation’s survival had depended on, the gap that Hans had not found because Hans’s reading of the building had been conducted through the documentation rather than through the above-angle observation that the changed practice had produced.

Hans had a gap in his practice, which was the gap between what the documentation said and what the structure currently was.

Amari filed this alongside the other accumulations in the analytical store, the store that had been building since the textile shop’s second floor, the store that was becoming something that was not just the intelligence on Hans’s model but the understanding of Hans’s mind, the two being different in the way that the portrait was different from the territory, the intelligence being the portrait and the understanding being the approach to the territory.

He was thirteen years old.

He had been studying the most formidable strategic mind he had encountered for four months.

The farmhouse kitchen held the morning light and the documents and the specific weight of Lev and Senna and thirty-four others and the operational cost of thirty-seven clean minutes becoming something else, and in that weight Amari conducted the specific kind of work that could not be conducted anywhere except in the presence of the weight, the work of taking the full account of what the thing had cost and what the cost had taught and holding both together in the form they came in, which was together.

He continued reading.

The records were thorough in the specific way of Hans’s organization, which was the thoroughness of someone who had understood that the records’ value was not in the volume of information they contained but in the precision of the information they contained, the specific decisions about what warranted recording producing a document set that was more useful precisely because it was less comprehensive, the deliberate omissions being the record’s quality rather than its limitation.

He noted them.

He noted them in the way he noted everything, with the flat attention of honest assessment and the open quality of analytical storage that did not yet require the noted things to have a designated category, allowing them to exist in the available space until the context arrived that would make their significance legible.

The light moved across the farmhouse kitchen in the specific way of winter morning light, low and considered and unhurried, and at the table Amari read Hans’s organizational mind through the records Hans’s organization had produced, in the quality of someone who had understood that the education was here, in the form that the opposition made available, and that the form was not the form he would have chosen and was the form that the work required.

He read until Cassi came to tell him the next runner had arrived.

He filed what he had read.

He went out to receive the runner in the cold morning air, carrying in the analytical store the accumulating portrait of a mind he was learning at the pace that the mind itself was teaching him, which was the pace of the opposition, which was the pace of the war, which was the pace that everything was moving at now, fast and costly and full of the specific quality of things that were both the work and the education simultaneously, which was the form that necessary things took when the time for the other form had passed.
