Chapter 123: The Approach
The Thornwall Pass, The Forward Camp, The Road North — Sixteen Days
The gods had not been defeated.
This was the thing John had been carrying since the Caldris Basin, since the mana’s direction had changed and the routing’s administration had ceased and the world had entered the gap between the administered system’s collapse and the restoration’s propagation. The seven gods were gone. The divine hierarchy that had organized the world’s mana for four centuries was absent from the world in the form of the living administration that had been conducting the suppression.
What remained was the suppression itself.
Not the administered form, which required the administering presence to maintain its directed routing. The structural form, four centuries of the suppression’s installation in the world’s mana system having produced the specific quality of the installed thing, the routing architecture present in the world’s deep systems in the way that the channel cut by long-running water remained after the water’s redirection, the shape of the prior thing expressing itself in the landscape that had been organized around it.
The structural suppression was not the living administration.
It was also not the original condition.
The gap was larger than the planning had assessed, and the gap was where the world was, and the world in the gap was the world paying the price of the transition that the restoration required, the transition having been initiated by the seven gods’ deaths and requiring the rightful holder and the staff’s complete covenant circuit to propagate the original condition through the structural suppression’s architecture and replace the channel’s shape with the flow’s original form.
The rightful holder was in the city fourteen days north.
John was not going to reach it.
He had understood this across the sixteen days, not in the single moment of the dramatic realization but in the accumulation of the honest inventory’s consistent findings, the ki perception reading the body’s state each morning in the flat quality of accurate information delivered without the management that would have organized the information into the comfortable form.
The right knee had not recovered on the weekly scale.
The left shoulder’s plateau had descended from three-quarters capacity to half, the Caldris Basin’s three hours and seventeen minutes having produced the specific adjustment to the plateau’s stable level that sustained maximum intensity engagement in the human instrument’s own medium produced.
The accumulated mana depletion across the twenty-two days had not restored fully between engagements in the way the prior depletions had restored, the restoration time extending with each subsequent depletion in the specific pattern of something that was being drawn from a finite reserve rather than a renewable one, the reserve being the specific quality of the six-century instrument’s capacity that could not be replenished in the intervals between the demands that the intervals contained.
The staff’s resonance was at three-quarters of the full form.
He had not told Helena.
He had not needed to.
She had the genuine seeing.
On the eighth day, she said: "Tell me what you know."
They were at the forward camp’s eastern edge in the early morning, the formation of two in the ambient form, each with their own instrument reading the terrain’s quality. The mana in the northern territories was conducting itself in the incremental return to the responsive flow, the first god’s death having begun the process that the subsequent six had been continuing, the structural suppression’s remaining architecture the only thing preventing the full propagation.
John looked at the morning’s light on the foothills’ terrain.
He told her.
He told her in the flat quality of the accurate information, the inventory’s findings delivered in the form the findings required, the knee and the shoulder and the depletion’s pattern and the staff’s current resonance and the fourteen days and the honest assessment of the gap between the fourteen days and what the fourteen days required of the body and the instrument.
She received it.
She received it in the full quality of the complete reception, the management not organizing it into the portion that was comfortable to receive, and he watched what the full reception produced in her through the genuine seeing, which was not the dramatic form of someone receiving catastrophic information but the specific quality of someone who had been reading the direction through the genuine seeing for sufficient days that the reception was the confirmation rather than the news.
She said: "The rightful holder needs the staff."
"Yes," he said.
"Not you," she said. The accurate statement rather than the question.
"No," he said.
She looked at the foothills’ terrain in the morning’s quality for the interval of the genuine sitting-with, the vines extended into the soil in the ambient form, reading what the root network held.
"Helena," he said.
She looked at him.
"The staff will reach them," he said. "Through you, after. The ki perception reads the direction clearly. The city, the specific quarter, the building where the person is conducting their life without knowing what they are waiting for. I will give you everything the ki perception holds before the end."
She looked at him with the genuine seeing for the duration the honest looking required.
She said: "You have been planning this."
"Since the Caldris Basin," he said.
She was quiet.
"Since before that," she said.
He received this.
"Since the seventh Forgotten Place," he said. "Since I understood that the messenger carried the staff to the rightful holder and was not the rightful holder. The carrying was always going to be the form of the end. The Forgotten Places’ knowledge, the covenant’s restoration, the staff’s complete resonance, all of it moves through me toward the person it belongs to. The moving through is the function." He paused in the interval of the full thought. "I was never the destination."
Helena looked at him across the forward camp’s eastern edge in the morning’s direct light, which was the light of a day that was conducting itself with the specific quality of days that were ordinary in their arriving and specific in their angle and carrying within them the weight of what was being carried in the space where they arrived.
She said: "When."
"The sixteenth day," he said. "At the rate the knee permits. The pass’s northern approach, where the structural suppression is thinnest. The gods are gone but the structural form remains, and the structural form expresses itself most legibly in the pass because the pass is the geographical feature that the routing used as its primary northern node. The thinness at the pass is the thinness of the node’s edges rather than the node’s center." He looked at the direction of the pass, fourteen days north and two days beyond, in the form that the ki perception read directions. "The staff’s resonance at the thinness will produce the expression that the passage requires for you to carry it through."
She said: "And you."
He looked at her.
"You will be there," she said. Not the question. The accurate statement of the thing she had already understood through the genuine seeing, the statement being the form of the acknowledgment rather than the inquiry.
"Yes," he said.
She returned her attention to the foothills’ terrain and was quiet for the duration the honest sitting-with required, the vines in the soil and the morning’s light and the full weight of the thing between them in the quality of the people who had been beside each other through enough to understand when the presence was the form of the attending rather than the speech.
After a long time, she said: "Then we walk fourteen days."
"Yes," he said.
"And I carry it after," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She stood and retracted the vines in the carrying configuration and looked north toward the pass with the sharpness and the grief and the honest carrying and all of it present in the quality of her looking, the genuine seeing directed at the direction rather than the person.
"Walk with me," she said.
He walked.
The fourteen days had the specific quality of time that knew what it was.
Not in the performed sense of the significant interval conducting itself with the gravity of its significance, which would have been the form that announced itself and required the people within it to organize themselves around the announcement. In the honest sense of two people walking north through the particular terrain of the northern foothills toward the pass that was fourteen days away, conducting the ordinary forms of the traveling alongside the weight of what the traveling was toward, the ordinary and the weight occupying the same space without either requiring the other to be reduced before it could be present.
The walking had the quality of six months of Ragnarok and nine months of the journey before that and six centuries of the prior forms, all of it condensed into the specific quality of the forward motion in difficult terrain at the pace the right knee allowed, which was not the pace that the prior months had produced but was the pace that was available and that the available pace required of the people conducting themselves within it.
John walked in the economy that the knee and the shoulder and the depletion’s honest inventory permitted, the economy not the performed version of someone managing visible limitation but the genuine version of someone conducting themselves accurately within the conditions the conditions had produced, the accuracy being the form of the dignity rather than the form of the surrender.
Helena walked beside him.
She did not adjust her pace as an accommodation. She walked at his pace because his pace was the pace of the two of them walking north and the two of them walking north was the form the fourteen days took.
Daven walked with them through the first four days.
He walked with the quality of someone whose fourteen years of preparation for the specific moment that was unfolding had produced in him the specific patience that very long preparation produced, the patience that was not the absence of urgency but the full presence of someone who understood that urgency was not the instrument his particular form of attending required.
On the fourth day’s evening, he stopped at the forward camp’s fire and looked at John with the expression that the genuine assessment of someone who had been reading the situation through the earth manipulation’s continuous geological record for the full duration produced.
He said: "The pass’s stone holds what you need."
"Yes," John said.
"The covenant’s mana at depth," Daven said. "Concentrated in the specific way of the places where the suppression never reached the depth the covenant occupied." He looked at the fire in the quality of someone attending to its quality rather than its warmth. "The pass knows what is coming."
John looked at him.
"The geological record holds time the way stone holds pressure," Daven said. "Long enough and the stone carries the shape of what has been applied to it. The pass has been carrying the shape of the covenant’s passage for longer than the suppression has been present." He paused in the interval of the full thought. "I believe this is not the first time the staff has been in that pass."
John was quiet.
"No," he said. "It is not."
Daven received this with the expression of someone whose assessment has been confirmed in the specific form the assessment had been oriented toward rather than in the general form of confirmed information.
"Then the pass will hold," he said.
"Yes," John said.
On the fifth day, Daven turned south, back toward the valley where the assembly maintained its presence in the form that Oryn and Brother Solen had been sustaining through the final stages of the Ragnarok, the assembly’s function having shifted from the engagement’s force to the practice’s continuation, the continuation being the form of the work after the gods were gone and the structural suppression remained and the world was in the gap.
He looked at John once before he turned.
The looking had the quality of the things that the fourteen years of preparation and the assembly’s full duration and the specific form of the working relationship between a demigod who had been waiting and a person who had been the thing worth waiting for had produced between them, the quality that did not require the speech to be complete.
John held the looking with the genuine seeing.
Daven turned and walked south.
John watched him until the distance consumed the figure and then walked north.
Brother Solen came on the seventh day.
He came alone from the assembly’s position, which was not the form the Solen of the prior months had moved in, the prior months having produced the specific quality of the person who understood that his function was most precisely conducted in the company of the community that the function required. He came alone in the quality of someone for whom the solo movement was the correct form of the specific thing the movement was for.
He fell into step beside John and Helena without preamble in the way that people fell into step beside other people when the falling-into-step was the form of the thing rather than the approach to it.
They walked for two hours in the quality of three people walking north through the terrain that the foothills produced, the terrain becoming the pass’s approach in the gradual way that approach terrain resolved into the feature being approached, not with the threshold quality of the first Forgotten Place’s forest or the coastal cliffs’ specific geological announcement but with the gradual quality of high ground arrived at through its own incline’s patient accumulation.
Solen said, at the second hour’s end: "The practice will continue."
He said it in the flat quality of the accurate statement, the statement that was the account of the thing rather than the comfort of the thing, the distinction being the distinction between the true thing and the reassuring thing, the two sometimes coinciding and in this instance coinciding precisely because the true thing was the thing that needed to be said in the form that the saying required.
"I know," John said.
"The original form," Solen said. "Not the institutional. Not the split’s interpretation. The form the fragments gave us and the seventh location completed." He walked in the quality of someone who had been practicing toward a specific form for the full length of his life and who had found the form and was now, in the seven days after the final engagement’s completion, inhabiting it in the quality of someone for whom the inhabiting was the practice’s destination rather than its occasion. "The communities that preserved it will continue. The two new practitioners. There will be others, as the mana returns. The responsive flow produces the practitioners the original practice requires, because the practice and the mana are the same conversation."
John looked at him.
Solen looked back with the expression of the seventy years of practice expressed through the specific quality of someone whose practice had arrived, in these final days, at the thing it had been building toward.
"You carried it to us," Solen said. "We will carry it forward."
"Yes," John said.
Solen nodded in the way that indicated the account was complete and the further elaboration was the wrong form, and walked with them for another hour, and then turned east toward the community that would be his next destination in the propagation that the practice’s continuation required.
John watched him go.
Then he walked.
The pass arrived on the fourteenth day.
Not dramatically, which was consistent with the quality of the full account. In the specific form that the approach terrain had been building toward through its patient incline, the pass’s stone walls rising on either side of the route as the route narrowed into the specific geographical feature that the word named, the stone dark with the season’s moisture and specific in the texture of the high-country geological record, the covenant’s mana present at depth in the form that Daven’s geological reading had confirmed and that the staff’s resonance recognized in the specific way of things in relationship recognizing each other across the distance of the medium between them.
The warmth changed.
Not the total warmth of the full resonance, which was the warmth the sixth trial had produced and that the Caldris Basin had reduced to three-quarters. The character of the warmth, the interior glow shifting from the quality of the complete form in the depleted state to the quality of something that had found what it had been oriented toward from before the journey’s beginning, the recognition warmth rather than the approach warmth, the string in the same room as the note at last.
He stopped at the pass’s entrance.
Helena stopped beside him.
The pass received them in the quality of stone that had been conducting its nature for long enough that the conducting was the stone’s primary property, the covenant’s mana at depth carrying the specific quality of the thing that had been preserved at the inaccessible level through four centuries of the suppression’s administration and that was now, in the absence of the administration, beginning its return to the accessible level in the incremental form of the restoration’s early process.
He said: "Here."
"Yes," she said.
He looked at the pass’s depth, the specific quality of the route through the stone carrying in its ambient air the accumulated character of the place, the geological record and the covenant’s residue and the prior iterations of the journey that Daven’s reading had confirmed were present in the stone’s memory and that the staff’s resonance confirmed in the warmth of the recognition.
He had been in this pass before.
Not in this iteration. In the prior one, or the one before that, the specific quality of the covenant’s passage through the human instrument in the forms that the prior iterations had taken, each one moving the understanding forward by the increment the iteration could move it, the increments accumulating across the iterations toward the iteration that could reach the completion.
This was the iteration that could reach the completion.
He held this in the inadequate framework and the honest form and the world-healed answer primary and all of it.
Then he walked into the pass.
The engagement was not with a god.
He had understood this since the Caldris Basin, since the honest inventory had been producing its consistent findings across the sixteen days and he had been carrying the findings in the full weight rather than the managed version.
The structural suppression in the pass’s northern node was not the administered suppression that had required the seven gods’ specific capacities to engage and remove. It was the structural form, the four-century installation in the world’s mana architecture, the channel’s shape in the landscape after the water’s redirection.
The structural form required the staff’s complete resonance expressed through the pass’s covenant mana at depth, directed at the node’s architecture in the form that the complete covenant picture described as the passage, the passage being the specific action that moved the staff from the person who had been carrying it toward the person it belonged to, opening the route through the structural suppression that the rightful holder would need to complete the circuit.
The passage required the full resonance.
The full resonance required what remained of the body’s capacity applied to the restoration of the staff’s depleted three-quarters form to the complete form for the duration the passage required.
He knew what this cost.
He had been knowing it since the Caldris Basin, carrying the knowing in the honest form rather than the managed version, and the knowing had been the form of the preparation for the sixteen days, not the preparation against the knowing but the preparation within it, the preparation of the person who understood what was coming and was conducting themselves in the time before it in the quality the time required.
He stood at the pass’s center with the staff held in both hands in the holding configuration and the ki perception reading the covenant’s mana at depth and the structural suppression’s architecture in the node and the route north where the city was and the person who was conducting their life without knowing what was moving toward them.
He looked at Helena.
She was beside him.
She had been beside him since the second month of the journey, the anchor and the vines and the genuine seeing and the anger and the sharpness and the grief and the internal orientation and the third Forgotten Place and the coastal caves and the volcanic plateau and the high meadow and all of it, the accumulated quality of the person who had been the anchor even before she had known she was the anchor, and who had found the internal orientation when the anchor was gone, and who was standing in the pass’s center in the quality of someone who understood what was occurring and who was present to it in the honest form rather than the comfortable one.
He said: "You know the city."
"Yes," she said. He had given her the ki perception’s full reading across the fourteen days, delivered in the evening camps in the form of the complete transmission, the city and the quarter and the building and the specific quality of the person’s presence, a woman in her middle years conducting a craftwork that required the sustained patience of the specific intelligence that was continuous with the world in the direct form, no Uncos, no mediated relationship, the original condition present in her in the way the original condition was present in the living things that carried the covenant’s quality in their cellular structure.
"She doesn’t know," he said.
"I will tell her," Helena said.
"Yes," he said.
"The staff will tell her before I do," she said.
"Yes," he said.
He looked at her with the genuine seeing for the duration the genuine seeing required, which was the duration of the full reception of the actual state of the person before him, the sharpness and the grief and the anger and the internal orientation and the honest carrying and the vines in the air of the pass reading the mana’s quality in the ambient medium and the complete covenant picture and all of it present in the quality of the person rather than as the explicit content of anything said.
He said her name.
He said it in the form that the third Forgotten Place had produced, the form that meant I see you rather than the form that meant I am addressing you, the name carrying in it the full account of the eighteen months of the journey and the war and the losses and the trials and the fragments and the genuine reliance and the management replaced by the authentic presence and all of it in the one word of the name said in the honest form rather than the performed one.
She received it.
She looked at him with the genuine seeing and said nothing for the duration of the sitting-with.
Then she said: "I know."
He held what I know contained, which was the full account of the everything she knew that she was acknowledging with the two words, and the two words were sufficient because they were the honest form of what they contained.
He looked at the pass’s depth.
He raised the staff.
What the passage produced in the pass’s stone and the covenant’s mana at depth was the specific quality of the complete covenant picture expressed through the complete resonance in the place that the geological record held as the prior iteration’s crossing point, the mana moving through the staff and through the stone and through the structural suppression’s architecture in the node, not the force that the engagements had required but the responsive flow, the mana moving as the covenant described the mana’s original movement, through the living things in the mutual responsiveness that made each more fully what it was.
The route north opened.
Not dramatically. In the specific quality of the structural suppression’s node receiving the covenant’s expression and the channel’s shape beginning its long adjustment toward the original condition’s flow, the adjustment being the work of the propagation’s decades and the rightful holder’s completion of the circuit, initiated here in the specific quality of the passage that the staff’s complete resonance and the covenant’s mana at depth together produced.
The staff’s warmth was the total warmth again.
The full resonance at the complete form for the duration of the passage, the depleted reserve giving what remained to the restoration of the complete form for the time the passage required, the complete form expressing the covenant through the node in the passage’s specific action.
John held it.
He held it for the duration the passage required, which was the duration that the ki perception read as the specific quality of the node receiving the expression and the route opening to the extent the passage produced, the extent being the extent that the rightful holder could walk through toward the city and the craftwork and the woman who did not yet know what was coming.
He held it through the duration.
The staff’s warmth changed in the final moment.
Not to the depleted form. To the form that was prior to all the forms, the form that existed before the carrying and after it, the quality that the staff had been building toward since the monastery and the crack and the first fragment and the coast and all of it, the form of the thing that had arrived at its completion and was expressing the completion in the only form the completion was available in.
The passage was complete.
He was on the ground.
He understood this through the ki perception’s honest inventory in the flat quality of accurate information delivered in the form the information required, the body’s state present in the full account of what the passage had cost, the complete resonance’s restoration for the passage’s duration having drawn from the reserve that the body’s six-century instrument carried and having drawn from it the full remaining quantity rather than the portion that the weekly scale of the recovery produced.
The ground was the pass’s stone.
The stone had the quality that Daven had described, the covenant’s mana at depth expressing itself in the accessible form in the pass’s aftermath, the node’s architecture beginning its long adjustment, the route north open in the specific way of the thing that had been initiated and would be completed by the person the initiation was for.
Helena was beside him.
She had been beside him since the second month of the journey.
She was beside him now in the quality of the genuine presence, the being-there in the form that the present moment required, which was the form that had no purpose and was not organized around any outcome and was simply the presence of a person in the specific place where the specific thing was occurring.
He held the staff.
He looked at her.
She looked at him with the genuine seeing, and the genuine seeing’s full quality was present in the looking, and what it received was what it received, the full account of the person before her in the state the person was in, held in the honest attention without the management that would have organized the receiving into the comfortable form.
He said: "Take it."
She reached out.
She took the staff from his hands with the quality of someone receiving something in the direct transfer, the staff passing between the hands that had been carrying it and the hands that would carry it the remaining distance, the warmth of the complete resonance present in the transfer, the warmth real and specific and generating from the inside, the covenant’s original condition expressed through the instrument in the form that the passage had restored it to.
The staff was warm in her hands.
The warmth recognized her.
He had not been certain it would, the staff having been oriented toward the rightful holder rather than toward Helena, but the recognition was the recognition of someone who had been walking beside the instrument for the full length of the carrying and whose particular form of the covenant’s connection, the Uncos and the root networks and the vines and the eighteen months of the responsive flow expressed through her specific instrument, was legible to the thing that expressed the covenant’s original condition.
The warmth recognized what had been beside it.
She looked at the staff in her hands.
She looked at him.
He said: "Go north."
She said: "John."
He said it in the flat quality of the accurate statement rather than the quality of the comfort: "The passage is open. She is waiting."
Helena held the staff and held his gaze with the genuine seeing for the duration the genuine seeing required, and what the duration produced between them was not the speech and was not the performed version of the significant moment but the specific quality of the genuine thing in the honest form, which was quiet and specific and more present than the dramatic version could have been.
She said his name in the form that the third Forgotten Place had produced.
The form that meant I see you.
He received it.
The pass held its stone quality around them, the covenant’s mana at depth expressing itself in the accessible form, the route north open, the city fourteen days away and the woman at the craftwork and the completion of the circuit that would propagate the restoration through the structural suppression’s remaining architecture across the decades of the work’s full form.
Helena rose.
She stood with the staff in her hands in the pass’s center, and she looked north toward the city for a long moment in the quality of the genuine seeing directed at the direction, and then she looked at him one final time with the specific quality that the eighteen months and the Forgotten Places and the trials and the losses and the genuine reliance and the world-healed answer and all of it had produced between two people who had been beside each other through enough.
She walked north.
He watched her until the pass’s geometry consumed the figure.
Then he looked at the stone.
The covenant’s mana at depth was present in the stone in the quality of the accessible form, the responsive flow beginning its long return through the structure that the suppression had been directing it away from, small and real and conducting its own nature through the available hours in the indifferent way of things that were larger than what occurred within them and that would continue regardless.
He sat with it.
The staff was warm in her hands somewhere in the distance.
He could feel the warmth through the ki perception at its current range, the final range, reading the covenant’s resonance in the person who was walking north with it toward the city and the craftwork and the woman who did not yet know.
The warmth was moving.
He sat with it for the duration the sitting required.
The pass held its quality.
The stone conducted its nature.
He held the full account of the six centuries and the monastery and the crack and the journey and the trials and the fragments and the genuine reliance and the management replaced by authentic presence and the messenger’s purpose and the world-healed answer primary in the place it needed to be primary, and the warmth moving north through the pass in the hands of the person who was carrying it toward its completion.
It was enough.
The honest form of the thing had always been enough.
He had been learning this since the monastery, across the nine months and the eighteen months and all of it, and the learning had arrived, in the pass’s stone quality with the covenant’s mana accessible at depth and the warmth moving north, at the complete form.
