Conrad looked at the eastern window alongside his father.

"Yes," he said.

The eastern window held the afternoon’s quality, the light at the specific angle of the season’s shortened days at the hour when the administrative day had concluded and the visiting hour had not been formally established but had arrived anyway through the specific logic of a son who had carried eight days of a significant thing and had found his way to the chair adjacent.

"He was here again," his father said. "Three days ago. The cartographic method for the eastern pass."

"The variation you invented," Conrad said.

His father looked at him with the expression that the visiting hour had been developing across four months alongside the decline, the unperformed version of the man inside the king.

"He told you," his father said.

"In the eastern corridor," Conrad said. "He said it was better than the original."

His father was quiet for a moment in the quality of someone receiving something that had arrived from an unexpected direction and was larger than the receiving had been prepared for.

"It was a small variation," he said.

"Not to him," Conrad said.
