Where the southern approach had expressed the directed force of the organized extraction, the northern preparation expressed something older, something that John’s ki perception resolved with the specific quality of recognition that the Forgotten Places had been building in it across the seven months, the recognition being not the analysis but the knowing, the immediate knowing that was prior to the analysis, the knowing of what the thing was before the knowing of what the thing implied. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

The northern preparation’s instruments were not built from the extraction architecture.

They were built from something prior to it.

From the original condition’s mana.

From the covenant itself, or from what the covenant’s mana had been before the usurpation had redirected it into the extraction system, the gods having been in the covenant before they had replaced it and having retained, in the primary three’s fundamental nature, the quality of the mana that the covenant had been made of.

They were using the covenant’s own substance against the covenant’s restoration.

John stood in the plateau’s northeastern corner with the Staff at full resonance and thirty seconds having become ten and then zero and the northern preparation’s instruments arriving in the quality of the most significant thing the engagement had produced, which was the information that the northern preparation had committed.

Which meant the assessment had returned.

Which meant they had read what he had assembled.

He called back toward the formation’s edge, in the compressed quality of the field instruction: "Wolves."

Kiran heard it.

The pack moved.

The engagement lasted four hours.

Not the clean resolution of a decisive action, which was the form that the planning’s logic had been organized around in the sessions before the declaration, the sessions producing the structure that the declaration’s timing would activate. Engagements between forces of this quality and this nature did not resolve cleanly, because neither side’s capabilities were fully legible to the other until the engagement’s conduct made them legible, and the making legible was itself the engagement’s primary product rather than the ancillary condition of the engagement’s conduct.

What John learned across the four hours:

The southern preparation’s instruments were the most immediately capable but the least adaptable. They had been built around the model of the opposition that the assessment instruments had been collecting since the declaration, and the model had been accurate for the opposition’s documented capabilities, but the engagement’s conduct had been organized around the principles beneath the documented capabilities rather than the capabilities themselves, and the instruments built for the documented capabilities found the principles-beneath approach in the specific category of the thing-the-instrument-was-not-built-for.

The northern preparation’s instruments were adaptable in the way that things continuous with the covenant’s original mana were adaptable, which was the way of the responsive quality rather than the directed quality, and the responsive quality was the quality that John’s own instrument was organized around, which meant the northern instruments were fighting in the same terms as the engagement’s organizing principle.

This was the harder problem.

He addressed it through Daven and Oryn in combination rather than through the Staff directly, the earth manipulation at the geological depth and the combat-refined scale producing a field condition that disrupted the northern instruments’ staging in the specific way that disrupting the substrate disrupted things that were constituted from the mana rather than merely using it, the disruption not destroying but displacing, the instruments finding themselves in the geological substrate’s altered state without the specific quality of ground they needed to maintain their coherent form.

The monks’ practice moved through the engagement’s four hours in the quality that the sustained practice moved through sustained engagements, not the acute intensity of the single committed expression but the continuous deep quality of the original form conducted without interruption, the mana it generated being the specific product of the covenant’s living relationship rather than the extraction’s directed force, and the continuous generation was the condition that the Staff’s full resonance required to maintain the northeastern corner’s covenant expression against the pressure that the northern instruments were exerting against it.

Helena moved through the engagement with the vines conducting the real-time root network reading that she had committed to at the engagement’s beginning, the reading being the instrument that made the mana concentration’s movement legible in the form that John needed it to be legible in, not the ki perception’s range reading but the biological record’s specific quality, the root network expressing the mana movement in the quality of something that was receiving it in its own medium and translating the reception into the specific information that the root network’s nature produced.

She was angry through all four hours in the precise way that she had been angry since the engagement’s approach, the anger being the honest form of what she was carrying and the carrying making the instrument more complete rather than less, the anger at the mana moving through the root network in the quality of indifference having found in the engagement’s four hours the specific form of the action that the anger was for.

She did not address this directly.

The anger was in the reading.

At the fourth hour’s end, the plateau held the specific quality of a contested space where both sides had conducted themselves at significant cost and neither had achieved the decisive resolution that the engagement had been organized toward on both sides.

The southern preparation’s instruments had been disrupted to the degree that three of the eleven had lost their coherent form, the disruption not the destruction of the divine mana that had constituted them but the displacement of that mana to the degree that the coherent form could not be maintained. The remaining eight had withdrawn to the plateau’s southern face in the specific quality of things that had received sufficient information and were returning it to the preparation that had sent them.

The northern preparation’s instruments had been displaced from the northeastern corner and from the geological conditions they had needed, but had not been disrupted in the way the southern instruments had been disrupted, the covenant-quality mana that constituted them being more continuous with the original stone’s residual expression than the southern instruments had been and therefore less susceptible to the displacement approach that the earth manipulation had been applying.

They were present on the plateau.

They would be present when the engagement resumed.

John stood at the northeastern corner with the Staff’s warmth at its complete quality and the formation around him in the states that four hours had produced in them, the monks conducting their practice without interruption in the sustained quality of the original form, Daven and Oryn in the specific condition of people who had been conducting their capabilities at significant range and depth for four hours and whose capabilities were real and were not inexhaustible, Helena with her hands on the stone reading the root network’s condition, Kiran with the amber eyes at the depth that the four hours had deepened rather than diminished, the dire wolves distributed across the plateau in the positions that the engagement’s flow had settled them into.

Senne was present in the way she was present.

Brother Solen stood at John’s left with the expression he had been wearing since the engagement’s beginning, the expression of seventy years of practice arriving at the thing the practice had been oriented toward without knowing the specific form the arriving would take, the expression of someone who had been wrong for four hundred years in the specific way that the first morning had established and who was present now in the condition of the person who had been wrong for four hundred years and had found the complete form of the thing the wrongness had been the partial version of.

He had been conducting the practice without pause for four hours.

His voice, when he spoke, had the quality of someone conducting the practice and delivering the accurate information simultaneously, the two not in competition because the practice was the condition from which everything else operated rather than the activity that other activities were organized around.

"The northern instruments are not withdrawing," he said.

"No," John said.

"They are learning," Brother Solen said. "The same way that someone learns when they encounter the thing their prior understanding was the partial version of."

John looked at the northern face where the instruments had redistributed after the displacement and held what Brother Solen had said in the quality of the genuine receiving.

The northern preparation had sent instruments constituted from the covenant’s own mana.

Those instruments had encountered the covenant’s full expression in the Staff’s resonance and in the monks’ original-form practice and in the specific quality of the northeastern corner where the residual mana had been restored to its living relationship with the original stone.

They were learning what the covenant actually was.

Not learning in the sense of receiving information. Learning in the sense that the covenant’s mana in them was responding to the covenant’s full expression with the quality of recognition that the covenant’s mana had always responded to the covenant’s full expression with, which was the quality of response rather than resistance, the responsive quality rather than the directed quality.

The gods had built instruments from the covenant’s mana without understanding what the covenant’s mana was when it was in the covenant’s original condition rather than in the extraction system’s directed form.

The instruments were understanding.

John stood in the northeastern corner and held this and looked at the plateau’s northern face and the sky above it, where the weather systems had been behaving in the specific wrong quality since the engagement’s second hour, the mana routing having disrupted the atmospheric patterns that the weather’s normal function relied on in the way that the river’s direction had been disrupted, and the weather expressing the disruption in the quality of a system trying to conduct its ordinary function in a medium that had been altered without the system being altered with it.

The sky did not look like the sky.

It looked like the sky trying to remember what the sky was supposed to be.

He understood this was the beginning.

The first engagement had produced the first learning on both sides, and the northern instruments’ understanding of the covenant’s nature was the most significant product on either side, because the understanding was the thing that the gods had not expected the engagement to produce and that could not be unproduced now that it had been produced.

The engagement had not resolved.

It had opened.

Everything that followed would be conducted through what the opening had revealed, on both sides, in the full form rather than the testing form, the declaration having been received by the gods in the quality that the northern preparation’s shift to covenant-mana instruments communicated, which was the quality of something being taken in the most serious form available.

John looked at the formation around him and then at the plateau’s altered surface and then at the sky that was trying to remember what it was.

He thought of Shen Wei in the monastery’s courtyard and the crack in the wall and the six centuries and the messenger’s purpose, and held all of it in the complete weight alongside the four hours and the engagement’s opening and the northern instruments on the plateau’s face and the weather systems failing and the root networks damaged and the river running east.

"We hold the northeastern corner through the night," he said.

The formation received this.
