Chapter 430: Substitute Bride of the Demon King (34)
This young woman had no talent in magic nor did she have a magic core, leaving her without the means to wield even the most basic spells. She was not even as good as the most inept magician with the lowest mana capacity in the academy. Naturally, she was not as good as Ellie, who radiated strength and capability.
Silas and Yue Ran strolled through the vibrant street market and took in the sights around them. The air was filled with aromatic spices that tickled his senses, while colorful stalls showcased intricately woven woolen textiles, charming trinkets, and an array of handcrafted items.
It was a bustling hub of life and creativity, yet despite the lively atmosphere, Silas’s attention returned to Yue Ran as they paused in front of a quaint little stall specializing in hair accessories. The stall was adorned with a myriad of glittering combs, delicate barrettes, and ornate headbands, each piece seemingly vying for attention.
The chubby stall owner was very considerate and held up a gemstone barrette, saying to the two guests in front of his stall enthusiastically, "You two are the most well-matched couple I have seen tonight." She then looked at Silas. "Sir, why don’t you take a look at this? This emerald green and gold crystal hair clip is exquisitely crafted and matches the lady’s dress very well. Why don’t you buy one for your wife?"
Yue Ran smiled with her lips pursed. She looked at the stall owner, shook her head, and explained, "Madam, you misunderstood me. He and I are not husband and wife."
Silas paused for a moment when he was about to extend his fingers and frowned unconsciously after hearing the young woman’s words. However, his face was usually cold and indifferent, so others could not see any difference. They only saw him take the gemstone barrette from the stall owner’s hand to his.
The stall owner did not care much about their relationship. If the two were not married, then they were engaged. What kind of relationship could a man and a woman who went out together to participate in the Lantern Parade have? Almost all of them were in love with one another.
When Yue Ran saw Silas holding out the hairpin, she immediately thought of something and asked tentatively, "Does Your Majesty want to buy this hairpin for my elder sister?" As she asked this, a trace of expectation flashed in her eyes, hoping for the man to answer her negatively.
For some inexplicable reason, Silas’s originally "friendly" expression suddenly turned a little gloomy. It was because when he had picked up the delicate hair clip, adorned with a stunning emerald gemstone, the first thing he thought of was the young woman standing before him, not Ellie. He just thought of how beautifully the emerald gemstone barrette would complement her elegant dress, so it should be a suitable accessory for her to put on her hair.
As a result, this young woman misinterpreted his intentions, assuming that he intended to buy the piece for Ellie. An indescribable feeling of frustration and anger stirred in his heart, but Silas himself could not quite pinpoint what he was angry about. So he replied impatiently, "So what? What does it have to do with you?"
After saying that, he threw the hair clip and turned away, feeling quite awkward and angry. Yue Ran naturally followed behind the man, though no one knew when she had let go of his sleeve.
Yue Ran walked slowly behind the male protagonist with her eyes slightly lowered. She looked down so that no one could read the expression on her face before saying, "Your Majesty, the Demon King has good taste; my sister should like that emerald barrette very much."
Why does this young woman always like to say such things?
"Enough, stop talking." Silas interrupted Yue Ran coldly, thinking that she was speaking out of line. "I do not need you to tell me how to do things; just remember your identity."
Yue Ran seemed to be startled by the intensity of his anger, her breath hitching slightly as she instinctively lifted her gaze to meet his piercing, irritable eyes. For a fleeting moment, the tension hung in the air between them; she could feel the weight of his displeasure pressing down on her. Yet, just as quickly, she averted her gaze, as if she had long been accustomed to his moody attitude.
After Silas finished his words, he also felt that his tone had been excessively cold and harsh. But he was so used to wielding his authority, to being the one in control, particularly in his interactions with Yue Ran, a woman who was weak and powerless, effortlessly eliciting his condescension, so he could not bring himself to apologize to her.
A silence stretched between them. The atmosphere became increasingly awkward.
Seeing that it was already late at this time, Yue Ran took the initiative to speak. With a slight regret in her tone, she made the last request of the night, "I have one last request. Can you accompany me to release the sky lantern? After that, we will go back..."
Silas pursed his lips. This request was not difficult, but it felt inexplicable... He did not want to go, probably because of her last phrase, "We will go back," after releasing the sky lantern.
Suddenly, he thought that perhaps it would not be that difficult to accept if time continued on like this. The man contemplated this possibility, but it was soon engulfed by a tide of reluctance that surged within him. His fixation with Ellie had made it hard for him to distinguish and process any other emotions that lingered in the corners of his heart. It was as if every other feeling had been eclipsed by the all-consuming nature of his obsession.
Yue Ran and Silas strolled along the cobblestone street, their footsteps echoing gently as they climbed the winding stairs that led them higher into the city.
