Chapter 1776: Zero Shame
Myrasyn’s ears twitched beneath her hood while Isveth kept her eyes peeled, taking all the mannerisms of the Holy Son in without judgment.
Felicity watched the couple from where she stood, smiling, completely unbothered by the public groping happening in front of her.
Alexios looked at his daughter. Then at the Villain’s hand openly kneading his woman’s rear inside a cathedral. Then back at his daughter, who had such a mild reaction to it.
’Just what,’ the King of Vraven thought slowly, ’did that fucker make my daughter see during the months he had her?’
Both arch priestesses watched the Primordial Villain fondle his governor inside a cathedral, and no amount of theological training had prepared either of them for this.
"What a weird creature you are, Quinlan Elysiar..." Velara whispered, her face begging for divine patience. "I’ll never get used to you..."
Elisabeth did not share her endurance.
"Such depraved actions cannot be permitted!" She took a step forward, golden light flickering at her fingertips. "Villain! Release the buttocks of your woman at once, or I will-"
Velara caught her wrist. "Wait."
"What is it?! Can’t you see the unforgivable sacrilege he’s committing on sacred grounds-"
Velara studied the enforcer with scrutinizing eyes, then, having realized the truth, she whispered, "I had my suspicions but...You really don’t know, do you?"
Elisabeth paused. Confusion crept into her expression beside the fury. "...Don’t know what?"
Velara’s grip softened, and the older priestess’s gaze drifted back to Quinlan, who was now letting Jasmine guide him deeper into the cathedral while his hand remained exactly where it was.
"That man..." she said, and the weight in her voice stopped Elisabeth cold. "The Goddess gave me a task regarding him."
Elisabeth stared at her. "...A task?"
Velara nodded. Her voice was measured, the words polished by numerous sleepless hours of turning them over in her head. "The Goddess contacted me directly when this man conquered Whisperfield. She told me to find a path where the faithful could endure under his rule. To negotiate and cooperate rather than fight."
She glanced at Quinlan, who was listening to Jasmine somewhere deeper in the nave. "Her exact words regarding him were... ’The insufferable brat will no doubt be just that. You must remain strong, my herald. Endure his terrible attitude for the greater good.’"
"The Goddess..." Elisabeth’s voice came out thin. "...called the Primordial Villain an insufferable brat?"
"She also said he is a conqueror, not a destroyer. The Goddess and that man have an arrangement. Political neutrality for us in exchange for our freedom to worship, heal, and operate without interference. He has honored every term so far."
"I see... That’s why this church exists..." Alexios muttered, expression hard to read.
"???" The color drained from Elisabeth’s face in stages, red to white to purple.
Her lips moved without sound, and the golden light that had been flickering at her fingertips sputtered once and died.
The Goddess had spoken. The Goddess had not only sanctioned the Villain’s existence but even bid his followers to try cohabitation with him.
"Impossible..."
A sharp smack echoed through the nave, followed by a delighted yelp.
"Quin!" Jasmine’s voice carried from deeper in the cathedral, more amused than scolding. "We’re in a church! Control your urges..."
Elisabeth’s head whipped toward the sound, and the sight of Jasmine looking up at Quinlan with a sly grin while rocking her hips once nearly broke her on the spot.
She turned back to Velara with desperation cracking through her voice. "But why didn’t he tell me?! If the Goddess herself said as such, why didn’t he say a single word?!"
Another smack rang off the cathedral walls. Jasmine giggled and shook her backside at him. "The first two were on the house, but the next one will cost you dearly, young man!"
"Sister." Felicity’s voice cut through, gentle and honest. "You were screaming at him from the moment you saw him. You barely let him get a word in."
She tilted her head. "If he had claimed he had a deal with the Goddess, would you have listened? Or would you have screamed sacrilege even louder?"
Elisabeth opened her mouth. Closed it.
Felicity smiled, soft and sympathetic. "He knew it was pointless."
A third slap echoed through the holy chamber, crisp and shameless, and Jasmine’s delighted laughter bounced off the vaulted ceiling. "Kya! Bad boy!"
Elisabeth’s eyes rolled back and her knees buckled.
Alexios caught her under the arms before she hit the stone.
...
Quinlan and Jasmine returned from the nave at their own pace, the governor hugging his arm to her chest with both hands and leaning into his shoulder, her smile so content and her cheeks so flushed that she looked like a newlywed on her morning walk.
"Are we ready to proceed?" Quinlan asked, scanning the group. "Guess the Goddess didn’t feel like speaking up herself."
"She rarely does... Every word costs her a lot," Velara admitted, voice small. "That was the first time the Goddess ever spoke to me in all my years of service."
"What a restricted existence she leads," Quinlan shook his head, knowing he would hate his life if he had to deal with so many headaches.
He’d have the urge to destroy all his restrictions and become free again.
"Or maybe you’re just not important enough?" he asked Velara with far too much sincerity.
The Arch Priestess’s forehead began bulging with a clearly visible vein. "My case is not an exception but the norm."
"Oh."
Velara’s hands tightened into trembling fists. Why was that such a big surprise to him?!
His gaze next landed on Elisabeth, who was standing with glassy eyes, pale and unsteady.
He raised his palm, and compressed earth materialized above it, shaping itself into a clean, smooth jug in a single breath. A ribbon of water coiled from the air and filled it to the brim.
"Here." He held it out to her.
Elisabeth took the jug and drank in three long gulps without thinking, her throat working on instinct before her mind could catch up.
"!!" Then her eyes focused on the ceramic in her hands, and the color crashed back into her face as she realized she’d just accepted water from the Primordial Villain inside a cathedral and drained it like a woman lost in the desert.
Her face scrunched, but before she could do anything drastic, she froze with her cheeks full due to the two gazes that pressed into her back like a continent’s worth of elven judgment.
Myrasyn and Isveth were watching her with smiles so sweet and eyes so dangerous that the message didn’t need words.
Elisabeth swallowed.
"Ahem." Myrasyn then cleared her throat with impeccable delicacy, then blinked at Quinlan with wide, sparkling eyes that had absolutely no business being on a four-thousand-year-old queen. "Khm... Khm..."
Someone’s throat seemed to be far too dry to even speak a single word...
Quinlan chuckled and shaped two more jugs from his palm, filling them the same way.
Myrasyn’s eyes went wide as she received it, cradling the simple earthen cup to her chest with both hands as if he’d placed a sacred relic in her palms.
Beside her, Isveth clutched hers the same way, fingers curled tight around the rim, not daring to let a single drop escape.
Then they drank, and the way they did it made the entire cathedral go quiet.
Myrasyn brought the rim to her lips and took the smallest sip, her tongue meeting the water first, tasting it, savoring the nothing-special flavor of plain clean water as though it were the nectar of the First Tree itself.
Her ears twitched once, her lashes fluttered, and a soft hum left her throat before she tilted the cup for a second, longer sip. "How can it possibly be so delicious...?"
Isveth mirrored her queen one beat behind, her eyes closing as the water touched her lips, the tip of her tongue catching a drop that tried to escape down the rim. "I’m speechless..." she whispered.
"It’s just water," Quinlan sighed.
"It’s not!" the two protested without missing a beat.
Quinlan let it go and shaped one for all his guests.
Even Morgana was offered one.
The Queen of Vraven fixed him with an incredibly venomous glare, refusing to accept it.
Felicity looked at her mother, then shook her head with the long-suffering patience of a daughter who had stopped being surprised a long time ago. "Mom..."
Quinlan shrugged, drank the water himself, then turned back to Elisabeth.
"I owe you one more thing. Shall we?"
Elisabeth looked up at him, still flushed, still rattled, and the confusion that crept across her features was genuine. "...What?"
