Chapter 98: The Shackles Returned
Moments ago...
In the couple’s apartment.
Kayla watched the news while waiting for her husband, who had gone out moments ago, her daughter resting gently in her arms.
Ciara was similarly quiet as she stared at the television with a look of intrigue.
Having entered E-rank, she felt pleased with herself and decided to relax a bit by watching the news with her mom.
Besides, she was particularly interested in whatever was going on with the skies.
’Could it be an apocalypse? A second dungeon outbreak?’
She was extremely curious, and slightly nervous.
Hopefully, it wasn’t anything too bad.
Suddenly...
BOOOMMMMM!!!
A terrifying explosion ripped through the world from the skies.
Everyone could see a pale streak of light sweeping across the already reddened heavens, impossibly brilliant against the blood-colored expanse.
The SSS-rank experts of humanity were shocked and slightly terrified by the development.
After all, they had just sensed a presence that made them instinctively lower their heads.
’Could it be that was what lay beyond the cracked skies?’
The same thought appeared in everyone’s minds, yet they were unable to do anything about it.
They could only watch and pray that nothing bad happened.
A faintly panicked expression appeared on Kayla’s face as she quickly picked up her phone and began dialing her husband’s line.
She didn’t know what was wrong, however that sound in the skies was anything but ordinary.
Having Amon out at this moment only made her worry increase drastically.
She dialed his line for a few minutes. However, although it was ringing, Amon wasn’t picking up the calls.
"Why isn’t he picking my calls? Could something ba..."
Kayla’s thoughts trailed off as she began pacing around the room.
Moments later, a slightly darkened light pierced through the skies, lasting only an instant before vanishing so completely that it was almost negligible.
Kayla hadn’t even noticed it.
Instead, her worry only deepened as time passed.
Ciara, who was on the couch, noticed her mother’s anxiety and was similarly curious about the whereabouts of her dad.
Knowing he was the Butcher, she couldn’t help but wonder whether Amon had gone out to handle the calamity unfolding outside.
Although it was hard to believe, she knew her father was the kind of person who would shoulder the weight of the world on his own, so she wouldn’t be too surprised if he did something like that.
’Come back safely... Dad...’
Ciara muttered in her heart, silently praying for his safety.
Just then, the air in the room shifted ever so slightly...
’Who?’
Ciara stiffened, startled as she sensed another presence in the room.
Kayla also turned around and was surprised to see an old man.
The old man stood with a respectful posture and a hunched back.
The moment he appeared, he bowed with the utmost humility toward Kayla.
"Madam, please forgive this old one."
He bowed once more.
Kayla and Ciara both stared at him in confusion, wondering what he was talking about.
"There is no time, so I can only do this while you’re awake. This time, the seal will likely be completely destroyed..."
The old man’s voice was solemn.
"Forgive me for giving up my life once more."
"Are you alr..."
Before Kayla could finish her words, the old man spat out black blood.
Instantly, he began forming hand seals.
His movements were so swift and precise that, in the blink of an eye, he had already formed tens of thousands of hand seals.
A soft white glow illuminated the room.
Chains began appearing.
Kayla’s eyes widened as she realized those chains seemed to emerge from her... heart?
’What?’
She was startled, yet realized she was unable to move a single muscle.
Ciara was similarly shocked by the sight.
’M... Mother?’
She tried to call out.
Her mind raced as she attempted to execute the Fireball skill she had mastered.
A small fireball erupted from her hand and flew toward the old man.
However, it dispersed moments after it was formed.
The old man briefly stared at Ciara, a startled look appearing in his eyes.
Then, a light of realization appeared within them.
After that, he smiled and no longer felt any regrets for the irreversible decision he was about to make.
Swoosh!
After forming one hundred thousand hand seals, his hands moved like a blur and pierced through Kayla’s heart.
Soon after, he pulled out a glob that resembled black slime from her chest and swallowed it.
Bang!
The old man exploded into a cloud of blood mist almost the moment he swallowed it.
He was killed instantly.
However, his goal had been accomplished.
Even at the cost of his life.
Kayla remained frozen and dazed for some time before, gradually, memories began surfacing in her mind...
Memories of an ancient past...
Along with those memories, her hair began turning silver, strand by strand.
A star formed between her brows, and an ethereal aura quietly spread from her body.
Within her memories of Earth, she began noticing things she had never noticed before.
Her husband’s mysterious increase in height.
His reassurance.
Everything.
Previously, she hadn’t thought too deeply about it, perhaps because most of her intelligence and strength had been suppressed beneath the Heart-Eating Lock.
However, now that she was completely free, she could finally perceive all the changes Amon had gone through...
She could now tell Amon wasn’t an unawakened like she had always believed.
But she wasn’t ordinary either.
Her eyes slowly shifted toward the skies.
There, she could sense two distinct presences.
One belonged to the man she had come to love.
The other belonged to the family she had abandoned...
With a single light step, reality shattered, and Kayla headed toward the two.
Ciara stared at the spot where her mother had been, a dumbfounded look filling her eyes.
’What’s going on?’
’Is that... my mother?’
She was startled and speechless, replaying the scene over and over again inside her mind.
’It seems neither of my parents are ordinary...’
Ciara muttered to herself.
Suddenly, her eyes shifted as another thought surfaced.
’Could it be my transmigration was orchestrated as well?’
...
While Ciara was lost in her thoughts, Kayla had already appeared within the void.
She glanced at the two...
Although she couldn’t see the face beneath the mask, she could instinctively tell from his aura that...
This was her husband.
Her husband was the Butcher.
The realization was startling and puzzling at the same time.
However, she could also understand, if only a little...
Thinking from Amon’s point of view, she realized he hadn’t wanted either of them to worry about whatever was truly happening.
’He carried the weight of the world all on his own so our daughter and I could live a peaceful life...’
Kayla felt a quiet ache bloom within her heart.
"Sister!"
She finally called out, washing away the lingering melancholy.
The countless years of memories and knowledge about her family that had returned to her hadn’t changed the way she felt about Amon.
He had given her the life she wanted.
A peaceful, fulfilling life.
The few years she had spent with him were worth more than the countless years she had spent as a slave.
Angelica turned around, and her expression finally softened into a warm smile upon seeing the all too familiar figure she recognized.
"Little sister... It’s really you..."
