Chapter 35: Legendary Spoils
"I couldn’t just leave a young kid to die." Leonard remarked, his body no longer aching with pain.
"That’s right! It’s all thanks to Big Bro that I didn’t become a snack!" Daisy proclaimed, her eyes gleaming with innocent admiration.
She tried to push her bodyguards aside, but they refused to budge. After nearly losing her once, they weren’t willing to take that chance a second time.
"Miss Daisy, please, we have to evacuate! Your parents will be worried sick!" The leader of the guards bellowed.
"Hmph!" Daisy pouted adorably. "I suppose making my parents worry when I’m about to ask them if I can keep my new pet wouldn’t be very smart."
She glanced toward Leonard and waved at him with a radiant smile.
"Thank you for everything, Big Bro! If you ever need anything, Ivory and I won’t hesitate to help you!"
"Ivory?... That must be what she named her Alpha Werewolf familiar." Leonard chuckled, returning the gesture.
"Mister Leonard." The leader of the guards said, turning to him. "You have my gratitude for saving her. Miss Daisy is a member of the Tameless household, whose bloodline is famous for producing powerful tamers. I will make sure to report your assistance so that you will be properly rewarded at a later date."
The revelation surprised Leonard. He had assumed that Daisy bonding with the werewolf familiar had been a fortunate coincidence. Yet, considering her household, her bloodline must have played a role in it, even if she had yet to fully awaken.
With bows of appreciation, the bodyguards promptly left the area.
"So you managed to clear the dungeon all alone?" Scarlett stepped closer, having already accessed his awakener profile.
"Suppression of a Grade 1 dungeon during a crisis, saving the life of a civilian... Your cooperation has been noted. One hundred merit points have been transferred to your account."
Leonard’s eyes widened. He hadn’t saved Daisy with the intention of earning merit points, yet fate had other plans.
"This must be your first time receiving merit points. They are similar to credits as a form of currency, but far more valuable. Coincidentally, to participate in the academy’s entrance exam, you must pay a fee of ten merit points, so you already have that covered." She explained.
As the Chief of the Fifth Gradeless Unit, Scarlett was responsible for scouting potential recruits to add to her unit. Although Leonard’s profile listed him as having a Common Bloodline, she saw potential in him.
There was always the possibility of him turning out to be a significant addition to the unit after receiving a proper education at the academy.
"I see..." He nodded slowly. He checked his account and noticed that, besides his credits, he now also possessed merit points.
"Chief, we have wasted enough time here!" Malakor exclaimed, a bad feeling creeping over him.
Suddenly, a deafening roar echoed, shaking the very foundation of the earth.
Everybody gazed upward, where a colossal creature with black scales soared through the skies. It had a reptilian head, two bat-like wings that kept it airborne, and two powerful legs that looked eager to seize its prey.
"I can’t believe it!" Bao dropped into a battle stance, grounding himself to make it harder to be dragged off his feet. "It’s a wyvern! These monsters can reach up to Level 80. It must have wandered into our world from a Grade 4 dungeon!"
The wyvern’s eyes narrowed on them. Like a silent predator, the creature dove in and accelerated toward them.
Shattering the windows of nearby houses along its path, its jaws parted wide, going for the kill.
Wyverns lacked the magical abilities of true dragons. Their only way of inflicting harm was through physical damage, and their intelligence was limited, similar to savage beasts.
Nevertheless, they were still incredibly deadly monsters that could effortlessly kill most awakeners with a single swipe of their tail.
"Young Master!" Miranda stood between the approaching beast and Leonard, ready to unleash her mana to its full extent.
However, long before the predator could reach them, Scarlett met its gaze.
The red vine tattoo that stretched over her leg shone brightly. It began to pulse with raw power, seemingly coming to life on its own.
She placed a talisman in front of her face and tilted it sideways, activating the engraving.
"Evil, be gone."
A large circle with a sigil spread across the ground beneath the unit, releasing a golden glow as it rose toward the sky like a protective veil.
The fearsome wyvern collided with the wall at full force, only to have its momentum stolen and be repelled backward.
With a pained roar, the monster quickly realized it was outmatched and hurriedly retreated.
Leonard’s breathing hitched in awe. He hadn’t expected that Scarlett was powerful enough to halt the advance of such a deadly creature. Now it made sense why they regarded the Chief with so much respect.
"We can’t let it get away after it!" Scarlett ordered, and her unit quickly followed after her.
"Chief, I felt a dangerous aura coming from Miranda just now. She must have been suppressing her mana. If it came down to it, I don’t think I would be able to win against her." Malakor admitted.
"Friend Malakor is right. It was only for a moment, but it felt like a bomb was about to go off." Bao added.
"It’s not our place to pry, and we have bigger priorities." Scarlett replied.
The Fifth Gradeless Unit continued to suppress dungeons.
Meanwhile, Leonard and Miranda had long since taken their leave, rushing to get out of the Upper Sector. If there had been one wyvern, a flock wasn’t out of the question.
Just then, he spotted something fallen on the ground from the wyvern that had attacked them.
[Wyvern’s scale]
[Rank: Legendary]
[A crafting material that can be used for forging weapons, armor, or accessories.]
The short exchange between Chief Scarlett and the wyvern had wounded the creature enough for it to drop one of its scales.
Leonard wasn’t an expert in forging, but he knew that the piece was too valuable to be left behind, so he stored it in his Dimensional Storage.
Now that only Miranda was by his side, he was able to focus on the system’s announcements after killing the Bloodthirsty Werewolf and sealing the Wolf’s Den dungeon.
[You have risen to Level 7!]
[You have gained 5 Attribute Points and 10 Evolution Points!]
Level: 7 [Experience: 25/800]
Content with reaching the next level, Leonard examined the status effect of his new title Lone Diver.
