Chapter 174: Chapter 174
Emily’s POV
I couldn’t help the pang of envy when Kyra told me she and Nathan had reconciled. Her happily-ever-after was beginning, and she deserved every bit of it. But my love life? A complete disaster. My fiancé died. Past relationships crashed and burned. And Kieran? He just used me. Now I’m alone again.
"Emily!"
I rolled my eyes at the familiar, irritating voice. I dropped some bills on the counter and grabbed my bag, eager to escape, but I could feel him following me.
Goddess! I’d already succeeded in making him investigate his father. He wouldn’t stop now that he’d discovered something, but why did he have to chase me?
"EMILY, I’M NOT GONNA STOP FOLLOWING YOU UNTIL YOU FUCKING STOP RUNNING AWAY AND TALK TO ME!"
My jaw nearly hit the floor as everyone in the bar turned to stare. Some looked annoyed, others laughed mockingly.
Fuck! I angrily took another step, attempting to ignore him, but he shouted again like a madman.
"I SAID TALK TO ME AND STOP RUNNING AWAY! I ALREADY TOLD YOU I’LL TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE CHILD INSIDE YOU."
My eyes widened at his words. I spun around to see the most pathetic expression on his face. The crowd started murmuring, and for the first time in my life, I felt truly embarrassed by someone’s stupid antics.
Furious, I stormed back, grabbed his shirt collar, and dragged him outside. I slammed his back against the hood of my car.
"You bastard! What did you say?"
He smirked. "You wouldn’t talk to me, and I promised myself I’d make you talk. By hook or by crook."
I glared daggers at him. "And you think that stunt was funny?"
His playful expression vanished, replaced by seriousness. "I’m not looking for something funny, Emily."
"Then why did you do that?"
"To make you talk to me."
"Now we’re talking. Satisfied?"
The corner of his lips curved upward as he shook his head, his eyes darkening. "Not yet satisfied, Emily. I want you to give me an assurance."
My forehead creased. "Assurance?"
"Be my girlfriend."
Laughter burst from me at his ridiculous request. I stared at him in disbelief, laughing while he maintained his serious expression.
My laughter faded as I realized he wasn’t joking.
"You serious?"
His jaw clenched. "Dead serious."
I chuckled again, pointing at myself. "Me? Are you sure you want me to be your girlfriend, Matt Foster? You don’t know me."
His jaw tightened again. "The information about you was hidden, Emily."
I smirked, crossing my arms. "So, you tried to do a background check on me?"
"You won’t tell me anything other than your name. At first I thought you were interested in me because we slept together, but now..."
"You actually had someone investigate me? And they couldn’t find anything?" I laughed, genuinely amused. Of course they couldn’t. The daughter of a rogue faction Alpha doesn’t exactly have an Instagram page.
"What’s so funny?" Matt demanded.
"You are," I said, studying him. Clean-cut Matt Foster with his respectable family and normal corporate drama. He had no idea what kind of world I came from, the blood on my hands, the darkness I’d seen. "You couldn’t find anything because there’s nothing for someone like you to find."
Nova, my wolf, stirred inside me. "He’s persistent. I’ll give him that."
"Persistence doesn’t equal qualification," I replied silently.
Matt’s eyes narrowed. "What’s that supposed to mean?"
"It means you’re out of your depth, Matt. Your biggest problem is probably some corporate inheritance squabble. My world would eat you alive."
"Try me."
My brow shot up. "Didn’t you get it, Matt? I was interested. Was. But not anymore."
His eyes sharpened. "Don’t you fucking tell me that you fuck everyone you’re interested in."
"I won’t tell you then."
He angrily grabbed my arm and stared darkly into my eyes. "You gave yourself to me, Emily. You can’t play like that anymore."
I smirked. "I didn’t know a soft boy from the Foster family could be so possessive. Tell me, Matt Foster, did you fall in love with me at first fuck?"
He gritted his teeth. "You don’t call it that way."
"Then what was it? Making love? Come on! That’s lame!"
"Fine, so be it. But you’re mine!"
"What?"
He suddenly crashed his lips onto mine. Whether I admit it or not, he’s a damn good kisser. The temptation of his tongue and lips was impossible to deny or resist. I found myself kissing back with equal hunger.
His hand slid to my waist, caressing me, and just as it was about to reach my ass, he stopped and looked at me. The playfulness returned to his eyes.
"You kissed back. You’re now my girlfriend."
"What?!"
He smirked. "I told myself that if you kissed back, you’d be my girlfriend."
My eyes widened in shock. I was so stunned that when he stole my phone, I couldn’t move. He typed something, and then his phone rang inside his pocket.
He waved my phone in front of me before returning it.
"My number’s already in there. See you tomorrow, girlfriend. You’re still single tonight, so you’re free to go home alone. But starting tomorrow, you have to endure me."
I remained frozen. He called a taxi for me and tapped the roof, instructing the driver to deliver me safely.
"You like him", Nova teased as the taxi pulled away.
"Shut up," I muttered.
"He’s refreshing. So... uncomplicated."
Matt came from a good family, lived a normal life.
Me, the daughter of a Rogue faction.
How could there ever be anything possible between us?
I touched my lips, was I really thinking about possibilities with him?
Goddess! Did I just get myself into big trouble? What just happened?
The taxi driver glanced at me in the rearview mirror. "Bad date?"
I laughed bitterly. "No. I think I just got a boyfriend."
"Congratulations?" he offered uncertainly.
I stared out the window at the city lights blurring past. "Yeah... we’ll see about that."
