Chapter 151: Chapter 151
Kyra’s POV
I was cleaning Nathan’s wounds in Emily’s apartment. I sat on the coffee table while Nathan sprawled on the couch, his face still bruised from the fight. Emily leaned against the island counter, watching us with her arms crossed and an amused expression.
"You better have left them battered and bloody," Emily remarked with a smirk. "Otherwise, I might think Kyra here was the one protecting you. She looks fiercer than you do right now."
I shot her a glance. "Emily..."
Emily had become like the older sister I’d never had since we met. Strong, independent, and fiercely protective. But sometimes her words could cut deeper than she realized, especially now when Nathan was already feeling vulnerable.
"What?" Emily shrugged, eyeing Nathan’s bruises. "It’s just strange seeing an Alpha looking so... defeated."
"Yes, he did leave them battered and bloody," I answered for him. "Just because Nathan is kind-hearted doesn’t mean we should forget he’s Alpha Nathan. He took on both of them at once, and they’re the ones who ran away."
Emily’s expression softened slightly. "Yes, yes, my mistake."
She offered a mock bow. "That high and mighty Alpha Nathan. Please forgive this humble wolf’s insolence. I shall take my leave."
She dramatically stormed off to her bedroom, closing the door behind her.
I sighed. "Sorry about that."
When our eyes met, I knew Emily had deliberately given us privacy.
She was one of the few people who knew I’d visited the doctor before going to my mother’s grave this morning. I’d wanted to bring news to my mother—I was pregnant.
My heart raced as Nathan’s gaze softened. I didn’t want to make the same mistakes as before. I needed to be honest with him now about the baby growing inside me. The doctor had confirmed it just hours ago. Positive. I was carrying Nathan’s child.
He stared at me with such love and admiration that my courage nearly faltered. How could I possibly hurt him now and tell him the complete truth about Snow when he was looking at me like that?
"What is it, Kyra?" he asked, caressing my hand.
The warmth of his palm seemed to comfort me, as if telling me everything would be okay and that I didn’t need to worry.
I took a very deep breath and swallowed all my fears before speaking the truth. "Nathan, I’m pregnant."
I didn’t blink. I stared at his handsome, bruised face, waiting for his reaction.
His lips parted in surprise. He stared at me without saying anything, and my mind became chaotic. Slowly, I saw happiness dawning in his eyes.
"R-Really?" His voice trembled.
I felt my heart racing. I swallowed hard again and nodded.
"Oh, Goddess," he gasped.
He was panting when he suddenly knelt before me. I wanted to stop him, but my body wouldn’t move. I couldn’t say anything. I was the one who surprised him, yet I was the one rendered immobile.
I flinched when he gently placed his hand on my stomach. His touch sent thousands of electrifying sensations through my body. He smiled as he glanced up at me, tears gathering at the corners of his eyes.
"Nathan..."
"Thank you," he whispered as he carefully embraced me. He kissed my hair repeatedly, and I could feel his love and care. "Thank you! Thank you, baby. I’m so happy right now. I could die!"
"Shh!" I immediately looked at him with a furrowed brow. "Don’t say that."
He sniffed and wiped away the tears rolling down his cheeks with the back of his hand. "Sorry. I was just... so happy. Goddess! Baby, I don’t know what to do or what to feel. I want to hug you and kiss you right now and... wait... did you tell Snow?"
I slowly shook my head. "Not yet."
He smiled and nodded. "She’ll be very happy. Let’s tell her later? Can you come with me? She was bonding with my parents before I left, but I promised her that you’ll have dinner with us later."
I smiled and nodded. "Of course."
I could tell him now that Snow was also his child, but I didn’t have the heart to ruin the happiness in his eyes. He was overjoyed at becoming a father. Who was I to shatter that happiness because of the selfish lie I’d been keeping all this time?
Nathan gently caressed my stomach again. He looked both excited and nervous.
If I told him the truth about Snow’s father... would he smile like this? Or would he lash out at me in anger?
My phone suddenly rang. It was Luke’s number—the phone I’d given to his younger brother Jaxon.
I looked at Nathan and showed him my phone. "Excuse me for a while."
After he nodded, I pulled myself up and went to the kitchen.
"Hello, Jaxon?"
"Miss Kyra, I... I was planning to give you the evidence that Luke left before he died, but..."
I straightened. "What is it, Jaxon? Did something happen?"
"Lucy... found it and I just saw her burning all the documents."
I squeezed my eyes closed, my hand gripping the phone tighter. "Oh my Goddess!"
Nathan walked toward me, alarmed. He stared at my face worriedly while I pressed my lips together and palmed my forehead. This was insane! Why would she do that? Those documents were our only path to finding the person who killed her brother.
"A-Are you sure she burned everything, Jaxon? We need it. We need that to find the person behind your brother’s death. That was our only chance."
I looked at Nathan again, and he immediately understood what had happened. His face darkened with concern.
"I saw it all, Miss Kyra," Jaxon said, "She burned everything. She’s so angry. She... hates everyone and she can’t accept what happened to Luke."
I felt my composure crumbling. Did I have the right to be angry with her? She had lost her brother—the one who had taken care of them, who had worked so hard to support them. I couldn’t imagine the depth of her pain. I had lost people I dearly loved too, and nothing could explain how devastating that felt.
Sylvia whined inside me, feeling my distress. The investigation was back to square one. All the clues, gone in an instant.
"I’m sorry, Miss Kyra," Jaxon continued. "I really wanted to fulfill my promise to my brother, but it’s gone now. I think I have to focus on Lucy. I don’t want to lose another sibling."
I cleared my throat. "I understand, Jaxon. I-I had my assistant transfer money to your bank account. Use it to start over. I promise I will never stop seeking justice for your brother."
"Thank you, Miss Kyra. I will find Lucy and convince her to leave so we can start over. I-It will be hard for us, but I’ll do my best to take care of her."
"Goodbye, Jaxon. Take care of your sister."
After ending the call, I looked at Nathan and shook my head, feeling tears threatening to spill. "I’m back to zero."
I kept it together on the outside, but I was falling apart. The investigation into Luke’s murder—maybe connected to my mother’s death—was dead. I couldn’t blame Lucy for her grief. I knew that rage. It’s what drove me to find out what really happened to my mother and why my father was killed.
Nathan wrapped his arms around me, his warmth enveloping me as I struggled not to crumble. How many more obstacles would we face?
