Chapter 137: Chapter 137

Kyra’s POV

I ran toward my car. Tears threatened to fall, but I held them back. Someone grabbed my elbow. Nathan turned me around. He was breathing hard. His face looked worried and scared.

"Kyra, it’s not what you think—" he said desperately. He held my arm tightly but gently.

"I’m sorry," I said.

My throat felt tight. "I didn’t mean to walk in. I just..."

"Kyra, listen." His eyes searched mine. "Sophia and I are nothing. We broke up years ago. I don’t love her."

"We broke up years ago too," I whispered.

He loosened his grip a little. He stared at my face. "I want us to try again. I’ve wanted that since I saw you again."

"This isn’t the right time—"

"I can’t wait anymore, Kyra." His voice broke. "I didn’t kiss Sophia. She forced it. She came to my office and did that. Please, believe me."

I looked at his eyes. I could see love there. I could see his fear of losing me. I knew when Nathan lied. I knew when he told the truth. After all these years, I still knew him.

"Why should I believe you want me back, then kiss her the next day?" I asked quietly.

"Because I’m not that guy," he said. "I’ve never been that guy. You know me, Kyra."

I pulled him close and kissed his cheek. I wanted to kiss his lips, but Sophia had been there.

He stayed still. Then his hand touched my back. It felt good.

"Am I forgiven?" he whispered. His breath was warm.

I stood on my toes. I moved close to his ear. "Give me time. Let’s fix our problems first."

Our eyes met. I saw hope in his eyes. He swallowed hard and nodded slowly. "Promise me you won’t stop loving me."

I smiled sadly. "I can’t stop loving you, Nathan. My wolf picked you long ago. I tried to stop but I can’t."

He stared at my lips. "I want to mark you right now."

I touched his cheek. I felt his stubble. "Get rid of Sophia, Nathan. Get rid of everyone keeping us apart. Snow and I want to be happy."

"I will. Please wait for me," he begged. "Don’t get tired. Don’t stop loving me."

I closed my eyes. He took my hands and kissed them.

I didn’t care about the people watching us. I needed to feel him. I wanted him to promise it was only me.

"Goodbye for now, Nathan."

He looked into my eyes. He nodded. "Goodbye, my love."

I stared at him, then got into my car. I looked back once. I drove away feeling peaceful.

The peace ended fast. As I turned the corner toward my building, my heart stopped. Huge flames swallowed the tower. My daughter was inside.

My mind went wild and I could only think about Snow. I parked badly and ran toward the fire, but firefighters blocked me.

"Ma’am! You can’t go inside!" one shouted. He held me back.

"NO! MY DAUGHTER! SHE’S INSIDE. LET ME THROUGH!" I screamed.

Tears streamed down my face as I fought the firefighters, but they were too strong. Sylvia fought inside me because she wanted to shift. I slapped and clawed at them while screaming my daughter’s name. I couldn’t think straight—only my baby mattered. I would jump into the fire for her; I couldn’t lose her—I’d die first.

"KYRA!" Someone called behind me.

I spun around. Emily was there.

I grabbed her arms. "Emily, help me. My daughter... she’s inside."

"Kyra, no. She’s not inside. She’s with me." Emily’s voice was calm.

I breathed shakily. I wiped my cheeks quickly. "Where is she?"

She touched my hair. "She’s safe, Kyra. I took her to the hospital. She breathed in some smoke but she’s fine. Ana’s with her."

I broke down crying. "Thank you. Thank you so much, Emily."

"I figured you’d come when you heard. I rushed back here. Sorry I didn’t call. I panicked when the fire started."

"I want to see her. Now."

"We’ll use my car. I’ll drive."

I followed her. I looked back at the burning tower—my home was gone. But I almost lost my daughter.

When we reached the hospital, I ran to Snow’s side and wrapped her in my arms. She was scared but awake, and the doctor said there were no problems—she was healthy, just shaken up. I was going back to Snow’s room when I saw Nathan running toward me with a pale, worried face.

He was breathing hard when he stopped in front of me. "I heard what happened. How’s Snow?"

"She’s safe," I said.

He let out a breath. "Thank the Moon Goddess! And you? Are you okay?"

My phone vibrated. I saw the number.

I looked at Nathan. "Let’s talk later. I need to take this call."

He nodded. "Can I see her?"

I smiled. "Of course. She’d like that."

I went to the emergency stairwell. I answered the call. "How dare you call me after what you did?"

[What?] Kieran sounded confused.

"Don’t act innocent, Kieran!" I hissed. "I know how evil you are! You hurt people without caring. Tell me! Were you planning to kill my daughter?"

Silence.

"Stop trying to hurt people I love, you monster!" I spat.

[How sure are you that it was me?] His voice was cold and angry.

I laughed bitterly. "You’re the only one who threatened my daughter, Kieran! She’s just a child! How could you?"

[It wasn’t me, Kyra! I called because I was worried about you! I wanted to check you were safe, and this is what I get?]

"Don’t play me for a fool! You’re selfish. You only think about yourself. You’d even hurt a child—"

[I can’t harm anyone close to you, Kyra, because I’m scared you’ll hate me more!]

I laughed. "You expect me to believe that?"

[You have to because it’s true.] His voice grew weak. [Yes, I threatened you. But I can’t touch anyone close to you because I know you’d hate me more! I’m so fucking in love with you and I’m ruining myself because I can’t live without you!]

"You can’t blame me for your twisted actions!"

[I’m not blaming you!]

I swallowed hard. I made fists. "You can’t manipulate me again."

[I’m selfish! A bastard, and I’d kill for you. But hell, Kyra! Even when I saw you kissing him today and looking at him like you used to look at me... I couldn’t do anything because I want you to forgive me. Why can’t you see I regret everything now? Why?] His voice sounded desperate and panicked. I started to doubt myself.

I took a deep breath. "I’ll never believe you again, Kieran. Turn yourself in. Pay for your crimes. Maybe then I’ll think about forgiving you."

[I’ll find whoever did this to you,] his voice was suddenly calm and scary.

[I swear, I’ll find who hurt what’s mine and make them beg for death.]

The call ended. I stood there shaking. I wasn’t sure if I believed him, but something didn’t add up. If not Kieran, then who wanted to harm my daughter?
