Chapter 295: Mewtwo vs. Lugia (Two-in-One)

Two flashes of light—the baby Lugia and Phione were drawn into Rio’s Poké Balls.

"Alright, once your Uncle Mewtwo goes out to buy some more food and drinks, we’ll have a real blast!"

When the two little ones were released again, Rio smiled. He turned and sent Mewtwo out to buy more supplies.

"Lugia~" — Let’s drink!

"Phione~" — Let’s drink!

The two little ones cheered excitedly, clustering around Rio with affectionate expressions, as if they had been with him for a long time.

Rio looked at them, his eyes narrowing into slits with amusement—because their friendship levels had dropped.

The two Poké Balls had initially brought their friendship from 0 to 30. But now, even though they were acting clingy and affectionate like lovestruck puppies, the information above their heads showed a drop of two points.

What did that mean? It meant they were saying one thing while feeling another—doing things against their true feelings.

You two little brats... you’re not pretending to be caught by me, only to turn on me the moment your moms show up, are you? Rio mused silently.

But he wasn’t worried. Even if they betrayed him, it didn’t matter.

An hour later, Mewtwo returned with dozens of cases of liquor and five hundred pounds of food.

The group of Pokémon gathered in a circle, eating and drinking to their hearts’ content. The little chubby Snorlax was, of course, the most enthusiastic eater—its friendship level even went up by one point.

Mewtwo’s friendship also increased—now just one point away from unlocking the first level.

Rio had no idea how long the feast lasted. All he knew was that he eventually got truly drunk.

When he woke up, it was Mewtwo who roused him.

"What’s wrong, Mewtwo?"

Rio still reeked of alcohol when he came to.

"I sense a powerful presence approaching." Mewtwo’s voice echoed in his mind. Its expression was serious as it stared toward the entrance of the main hall.

Seeing Mewtwo like that, Rio’s drunkenness faded considerably.

If Mewtwo sensed a strong oppressive force, that could only mean one thing—the Lugia that had been out on patrol had returned.

"Old Ghost, little chubby, Charizard—wake up!" Rio called out.

Old Ghost and Charizard stirred from their sleep. The little chubby Snorlax, however, kept snoring away, as if it hadn’t heard a thing.

Just as Rio was about to walk over and give the little chubby a tap on the head, Mewtwo’s voice suddenly rang out:

"It’s here!"

Rio turned his head—and saw a Pokémon identical in appearance to the baby Lugia, but much larger in size, burst out from the entrance.

Its expression was calm at first. But the moment it saw Rio, Mewtwo, Gengar, and Charizard—along with the baby Lugia and Phione lying on the ground—its aura changed completely.

A murderous intent exploded from within it.

Under that killing intent, Rio sobered up even more.

"Human! What have you done to my child?!" Lugia’s furious voice roared in his mind, sounding like it wanted to tear him apart.

"Let me explain—they’re fine. They’re just drunk."

Rio pointed at the baby Lugia and Phione. As if worried Lugia might not understand what alcohol was, he picked up an empty bottle.

"This is it—a drink we humans have. It makes people happy. Lugia, want a bottle too?"

But Lugia didn’t respond. Instead, it let out an enraged roar.

"LUUUUGIA!!!"

Its roar echoed through the entire temple. The little chubby Snorlax, who had been sound asleep, was jolted awake. It sat up with a dazed look, staring blankly in the direction of the sound.

The baby Lugia and Phione were also startled awake by the roar.

"Lugia~" — Who’s the lunatic ruining my beauty sleep?! So annoying!

"Phione~" — Yeah, yeah! I was having such a nice dream! Whoever woke me up is a jerk!

The two little ones sat up rubbing their eyes. But when they saw who had roared—Lugia—their expressions changed instantly.

"Lugia~" — Mom! They bullied me! They forced me and Phione to become their Pokémon!

Without a moment’s hesitation, the baby Lugia flapped its wings and rushed over, completely selling Rio out without any second thoughts.

"Phione~" — Auntie Lugia, the baby Lugia’s right! While you were gone, this human and his Pokémon bullied us and forced us to become his Pokémon!

On the other side, Rio received Old Ghost’s timely translation. His mouth twitched.

He had anticipated that these two little brats would sell him out—but he hadn’t expected them to do it so quickly. Not even a shred of drinking-buddy loyalty.

Lugia, upon hearing her child’s and Phione’s words, grew even more enraged.

"Human! How dare you capture them in Poké Balls while I was away?! You have some nerve!"

"Hurry up and destroy the Poké Balls you used on them—or I swear I’ll take your life today!"

Its voice thundered in Rio’s mind like rolling thunder. As it spoke, energy began gathering in its mouth.

Facing Lugia’s thunderous roar, Rio shrugged and picked at his ear.

"Sorry, but I’ve always had plenty of nerve. Not only did I catch them—I’m planning to catch you too."

The moment those words left his mouth, the energy beam in Lugia’s mouth erupted—blasting straight toward Rio.

But it was blocked entirely by Mewtwo’s Protect.

Lugia froze. It seemed surprised that its attack had been stopped. Even if Mewtwo had used Protect, was its divine skill—Aeroblast—supposed to be so easily blocked by just one Protect?

"Lugia, surprised? Shocked?" Rio laughed. "Don’t worry—I’m not the same kid you could easily bully last year. Today, I will catch you. Charizard, Gengar, Mewtwo, little chubby—attack together!"

"No need. Fighting together would be too shameful. Let me fight it alone."

But Rio’s plan was overruled by Mewtwo. Ignoring whether Rio agreed or not, Mewtwo challenged Lugia itself.

"Big one, let’s take this outside. We can’t fight at full strength in here—and neither can you." Mewtwo’s voice rang out, full of fighting spirit.

Rio was a bit speechless, but he didn’t stop Mewtwo. That was just Mewtwo’s nature—proud and stubborn. If you didn’t let it have its way, it would resent you. The only solution was to let it take a beating first, then offer advice afterward.

"Fine. Let’s fight. But what kind of Pokémon are you? I sense a hint of Mew’s presence from you." Lugia accepted the challenge, though it was curious about Mewtwo’s identity.

"Don’t mention Mew! My name is Mewtwo—it’s nothing but my shadow!"

At the mention of Mew, Mewtwo became agitated. Without even going outside first, it hurled an Aura Sphere.

Lugia spread its wings and used Air Slash to block the attack. Then, carrying the baby Lugia and Phione, it flew out of the temple. Mewtwo followed behind.

"Let’s go. Let’s go watch Mewtwo fight Lugia." Rio said to Gengar.

Gengar carried Rio out. On the way out, Rio recalled Charizard and the little chubby Snorlax into their Poké Balls. When they were released again, they were already above the sea.

The battle between Mewtwo and Lugia began immediately.

The ungrateful little Lugia and Phione cheered wildly from behind. Rio and the others watched quietly.

"Who do you think is stronger—Mewtwo or Lugia?" Gengar’s voice echoed in Rio’s mind.

"To be honest, under normal circumstances, I’d lean toward Lugia." Rio admitted. In his view, while Mewtwo was very strong, it was still an artificial Pokémon—its overall power was below that of regional guardian legends, though far above Raikou and the legendary birds.

"Normal circumstances? Are there abnormal ones?" Gengar asked.

"Of course. There’s a powerful force hidden inside Mewtwo. If it can unlock that, I’d lean toward it." Rio smiled.

He was talking about Mega Evolution. With X and Y forms, if Mewtwo still couldn’t beat Lugia, Rio would be shocked. Unless Lugia also had a similar form—then he’d take it back.

While Rio and Gengar talked, Mewtwo hurled a Psystrike at Lugia. Lugia countered with Aeroblast. The two moves collided midair, resulting in a massive explosion. The shockwave spread in all directions.

The baby Lugia and Phione, being weaker, were nearly blown away—but Lugia protected them with Psychic.

"Focus on the fight. If your child gets blown away, my trainer Rio will find them." Mewtwo was annoyed by Lugia’s distraction. After that warning, it fired another Psycho Cut at Lugia.

Lugia glanced at Rio, then indeed stopped worrying about its child. It spread its wings, covered its body in water, and used Liquidation to block the Psycho Cut.

"LUUGIA!!!"

It roared skyward—the weather instantly turned dark with storm clouds, and waterspouts erupted from the sea. Then Lugia used Weather Ball—dozens of water spheres formed from seawater, hurling toward Mewtwo.

Mewtwo dodged with Teleport, but was still hit—not by Weather Ball, but by Lugia’s Dragon Rush. Orange energy enveloped Lugia’s body as it used Zen Headbutt to sense spatial fluctuations, then turned and slammed into Mewtwo the moment it Teleported. The attack connected, sending Mewtwo reeling—nearly falling into the sea.

Mewtwo looked at Lugia in surprise. It hadn’t expected Lugia to be able to track its Teleport.

"Lugia~" — You call yourself Mewtwo, and Mew is your shadow—but from what I see, you’re not as strong as I expected.

Lugia hovered high above, looking down at Mewtwo with contempt.

Mewtwo was furious—furious beyond words. It raised its right hand and used Psyshock, sending a solid wave of psychic energy toward Lugia.

But just as the attack was about to reach Lugia, it was blocked by Aeroblast and sent back at Mewtwo.

Mewtwo used Teleport again—but the moment it appeared several dozen meters away, Lugia repeated its earlier tactic, slamming into Mewtwo with Sky Attack.

After several more exchanges, Mewtwo had landed some hits on Lugia, but Lugia had landed far more.

"At this rate, Mewtwo will lose." Gengar’s voice echoed in Rio’s mind.

"I know." Rio nodded.

"You know?" Gengar looked at him puzzled. "Then are we just going to watch it lose?"

"Of course not." Rio shrugged. "We wait for the right moment—when it shows clear signs of struggle, we step in. Right now, Mewtwo’s eyes are still full of defiance. Jumping in now would only make it angry."

Hearing that, Gengar said no more and continued watching.

Mewtwo fought on, getting battered repeatedly, using Recover to heal itself, then fighting again. Over and over.

This continued until the third Recover. Then Rio spoke.

"Now we can help it."

In Rio’s view, Mewtwo had gone from being arrogantly proud, to stubborn, to now—showing some fear.

"Got it!"

Gengar, who had been itching to jump in, immediately moved forward. It used Shadow Ball to block an Ancient Power from Lugia, shielding Mewtwo.

Mewtwo turned back in surprise to look at Rio. The truth was, it had wanted to call for help for a while—but its pride had stopped it. Asking for help now would be too embarrassing. But then Gengar had acted unexpectedly.

"How’s it going, Mewtwo? How’s the fight with Lugia?"

Rio rode on Charizard’s back as he came up beside Mewtwo.

"Strong. Very strong. I can’t beat it right now." Mewtwo admitted. "I’m sorry, Rio. I was overconfident."

"No need to apologize. Victory and defeat are just part of the world. Besides, just because you can’t beat it now doesn’t mean you won’t be able to in the future. I believe you’ll definitely defeat Lugia someday." Rio smiled.

"Really?" Mewtwo looked at him in surprise—it hadn’t expected him to have so much faith in it.

"Of course. You’re Mewtwo—full of infinite possibilities. Who else would I believe in?" Rio praised.

The moment he finished speaking, a notification rang in his mind.

[Mewtwo’s friendship has increased.]

[Friendship: 20 (-40 → 20)]

[Mewtwo’s starting friendship was -40. Current friendship is 20. Increase of 60 points. First level reward unlocked.]

[Reward Unlocked: Mewtwo has unlocked Mega Evolution X and Mega Evolution Y. ]

Hearing that notification, Rio’s eyes lit up instantly.

He had been feeling sleepy—and now a pillow had been handed right to him.
