Chapter 159: The Master’s Lesson
A thin crack spread across Guardian Zero’s crystal armor.
He looked down in disbelief.
"No..."
"That shouldn’t be possible."
Elder Song lowered his wooden staff.
"I didn’t crack your armor."
"I cracked your conviction."
The words hit harder than any weapon.
Guardian Zero remained silent.
Nathan stepped beside his master.
The old man looked weaker than before.
His soul had become almost transparent.
The crystal chains binding him pulsed with blue light, trying to pull him back into the Core.
"Master..."
"You need to return."
Elder Song smiled.
"I will."
"But first..."
He looked at Guardian Zero.
"...this child still needs one final lesson."
Guardian Zero laughed bitterly.
"Child?"
"I’ve existed longer than entire civilizations."
Elder Song nodded.
"And yet..."
"You still haven’t grown."
The laughter stopped.
For the first time since appearing, Guardian Zero looked genuinely angry.
"You know nothing about me."
"I know enough."
"You carried the weight of every world."
"You sacrificed everything."
"You watched countless people die."
"You convinced yourself that control was mercy."
The old man’s eyes softened.
"I don’t blame you."
"I pity you."
Guardian Zero’s fists trembled.
"I gave up my humanity to protect creation!"
"And who protected yours?"
Silence.
Nathan looked at Guardian Zero carefully.
The confidence that had surrounded the First Guardian since their battle began was fading.
Elder Song took another slow step forward.
"Tell me."
"When was the last time someone asked if you were alright?"
Guardian Zero opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
The answer...
Was longer ago than he could remember.
The city below continued shaking.
Another explosion echoed in the distance.
Halo’s excited voice rang through every communicator.
[Anchor Nine destroyed!]
[Reality Merge reduced to thirty-three percent!]
Harold laughed over the transmission.
"We’re winning!"
Guardian Zero ignored the announcement.
His eyes never left Elder Song.
"You don’t understand."
"If I stop..."
"...everything collapses."
Elder Song smiled gently.
"No."
"You simply became afraid to trust someone else."
Nathan slowly understood.
Guardian Zero hadn’t become cruel because he wanted power.
He became cruel because he believed only he could carry the burden.
It was loneliness.
The same loneliness that had once consumed the child behind the Silent Door.
Guardian Zero looked toward Nathan.
"You think your friends make you stronger."
"They do."
"They’ll become your weakness."
Nathan shook his head.
"No."
"They’re the reason I keep standing."
As if to prove his words, Yelena’s voice came through Halo’s communicator.
"Nathan!"
"I’ve reached Anchor Eleven!"
Nova spoke immediately after.
"The mountain has disappeared!"
Harold followed.
"Only three anchors remain!"
Nathan smiled.
"They’re carrying this battle with me."
Guardian Zero lowered his head.
"I don’t remember..."
"...what that’s like."
A memory flashed through his eyes.
A younger version of himself.
Laughing beside companions whose faces had long been forgotten.
The memory shattered like glass.
He grabbed his head.
"No..."
"I erased them."
Nathan frowned.
"What?"
Guardian Zero fell to one knee.
"I deleted every memory that made me hesitate."
"I thought emotions made me weak."
"So I removed them."
Elder Song sighed deeply.
"And in doing so..."
"...you removed the very reason you fought."
Blue light leaked from the cracks in Guardian Zero’s armor.
His breathing became uneven.
The crystal giant behind him trembled violently.
Halo suddenly shouted.
[Partner!]
[The Core is destabilizing!]
Nathan turned.
The crystal giant’s chest had begun splitting apart.
Massive fractures raced across its body.
The imprisoned Elder Song cried out as the chains tightened around him.
Guardian Zero looked back in horror.
"No..."
"It wasn’t supposed to happen like this."
The mechanical voice echoed from the giant one final time.
"Emergency Protocol Activated."
"Pilot instability confirmed."
"Beginning Core Self-Destruction."
Every remaining blue pillar shot a beam of light into the sky.
The clouds parted.
Above the city...
A massive countdown appeared.
09:59
09:58
09:57
Harold’s voice lost all humor.
"Nathan..."
"If that Core explodes..."
Halo completed the sentence.
[Every merged memory on Earth will collapse simultaneously.]
[Estimated casualties... 4.8 billion.]
Nathan stared at the countdown.
Then at Elder Song.
Then at Guardian Zero.
There was no time left.
Guardian Zero slowly lifted his head.
For the first time...
The cold blue light faded from his eyes.
He looked at Nathan with quiet regret.
Then he whispered five words that changed everything.
"I know who created me."
Nathan’s heartbeat stopped.
Guardian Zero looked toward the dark sky beyond the clouds.
A shadow stood there.
Watching.
Smiling.
"You’ve been looking..."
"...at the wrong enemy."
"You’ve been looking..."
"...at the wrong enemy."
Guardian Zero’s words echoed across the battlefield.
Nathan slowly lifted his head.
High above the broken clouds...
A lone figure stood in the darkness.
No aura.
No spiritual pressure.
No overwhelming power.
Yet everyone felt an instinctive fear the moment they looked at him.
It was as though reality itself wanted them to look away.
Halo’s crystal dimmed.
Its voice, usually calm, trembled.
[I... can’t identify him.]
Harold stared upward.
His face lost every trace of color.
"No..."
"It can’t be."
Nathan looked at him.
"You know who he is?"
Harold answered without taking his eyes off the shadow.
"I know..."
"...what he is."
The figure took one slow step forward.
He appeared to be an ordinary man dressed in a black coat.
His face was hidden beneath the hood.
Only his silver eyes were visible.
Those eyes swept across the battlefield.
They ignored Nathan.
Ignored Halo.
Ignored Nova.
They settled on Guardian Zero.
The stranger smiled.
"You’ve talked too much."
Guardian Zero instinctively stepped backward.
For the first time...
The First Guardian was afraid.
"I served you."
"I completed every mission."
"I preserved every timeline."
The hooded man nodded.
"You did."
"And now..."
"...you’re no longer useful."
He casually snapped his fingers.
A sharp crack echoed through the sky.
Guardian Zero screamed.
The crystal rings floating behind him shattered into dust.
Blue light poured from his body.
Nathan reacted instantly.
"Move!"
He shot through the air, catching Guardian Zero before he fell.
The First Guardian coughed violently.
Blood stained his lips.
"My..."
"My connection..."
Halo scanned him.
[Life force dropping rapidly.]
Nathan glared at the hooded stranger.
"Who are you?"
The man chuckled.
"A question every Guardian eventually asks."
"You may call me..."
He removed his hood.
Nathan’s eyes widened.
The man’s face...
Was identical to his own.
Only older.
His expression was colder.
His eyes carried no warmth.
No hope.
Only endless emptiness.
Yelena whispered,
"Another Nathan..."
Harold immediately shook his head.
"No."
"He’s never been human."
The stranger smiled.
"I borrowed this face."
Nathan slowly stood.
"What do you want?"
The man looked around at the fractured world.
"I built this place."
"I wrote its laws."
"I watched civilizations rise and disappear."
He looked directly into Nathan’s eyes.
"And every time..."
"...humans disappoint me."
Nova stepped in front of Nathan.
"You lied."
The stranger smiled at her.
"No."
"I simply omitted the truth."
The little girl’s hands clenched.
"You trapped me behind the Silent Door."
"I protected creation from you."
"You imprisoned me because you feared what I represented."
The stranger laughed.
"No."
"I imprisoned you..."
"...because compassion destroys perfect order."
Harold’s voice became heavy.
"Nathan..."
"He isn’t the Creator."
"He existed..."
"...before creation."
Silence spread.
The stranger bowed theatrically.
"At last."
"Someone remembers."
Halo projected warning after warning.
Every screen displayed the same impossible result.
---
Analysis Failed
Origin: Unknown
Age: Undefined
Existence: Outside Universal Records

The stranger smiled at Halo.
"You’re still trying."
"I admire your persistence."
With a simple wave of his hand...
Halo’s light disappeared.
The little crystal fell from the air.
"Halo!"
Nathan caught the crystal before it struck the ground.
No glow.
No voice.
Nothing.
The connection was gone.
Nova’s eyes filled with panic.
"What did you do?"
"I reminded it."
"...that I wrote the rules."
The countdown above the city continued.
07:42
07:41
07:40
Guardian Zero grabbed Nathan’s sleeve with what little strength he had left.
His breathing was ragged.
"Listen..."
Nathan knelt beside him.
"I’m here."
Guardian Zero forced himself to speak.
"The Recovery Protocol..."
"It wasn’t my idea."
Nathan frowned.
"What?"
"I was ordered..."
"...to build it."
The First Guardian coughed blood.
"He..."
"...wanted humanity to remember."
"So they would never stop suffering."
Nathan slowly turned toward the hooded man.
The stranger didn’t deny it.
Instead...
He smiled.
"Pain creates obedience."
"Hope creates rebellion."
"I simply encouraged the stronger emotion."
Nathan’s fists trembled.
"So every tragedy..."
"Every cycle..."
"Every sacrifice..."
The stranger nodded calmly.
"I arranged them."
The city fell silent.
Even the wind stopped blowing.
Nathan looked down at the powerless Halo resting in his hands.
Then at Elder Song, still trapped inside the failing Core.
Then at Guardian Zero, dying beside him.
Finally...
He raised his eyes to meet the stranger’s gaze.
"You made one mistake."
The stranger tilted his head.
"Oh?"
Nathan slowly stood.
"You taught me how people break."
Blue lightning suddenly burst from Nathan’s body.
Not system energy.
Not cultivation.
Something entirely new.
It was born from every choice he had made.
Every person he had saved.
Every sacrifice he had refused to waste.
Nathan’s eyes glowed with brilliant silver light.
"But you never learned..."
"...how they rise again."
For the first time since revealing himself...
The stranger’s smile disappeared.
He whispered one name.
"Impossible..."
"...Ascendant."
