Chapter 1240: Chapter 403: Crossfire on Two Fronts

The initial threat phase of the nuclear explosion has passed, but the effects it caused are only just beginning.

Despite it being noon, Da Haguai’s sky displayed a strange multicolored light membrane, a scene caused by massive radiation ionization in the air.

Beyond that light membrane, the sky resembled scorched flesh, with gloomy black clouds revealing mottled blood-red hues, even the sun was obscured.

The whole world plunged into darkness, as if dragged into Hell by invisible hands, with each breath feeling like the lungs were being seared by high temperatures.

David and his team were not the first troops to arrive in Da Haguai; on the way, they saw many trucks full of personnel heading towards Pig Bay.

However, all the electronics failed, all communications were disrupted, making contact between them impossible.

Even though they survived the first wave of the EMP, the intense electromagnetic interference rendered all electronic devices unusable, and they couldn’t reach the command center.

This situation would last for several days before gradually calming down, with the economic loss multiples worse than a ground nuclear explosion.

Upon reaching the outskirts of the city, they recognized the signs identifying their former comrades from the Third Company due to previous training together.

Mann stopped the car, presented his credentials, and submitted to an inspection by the other party, after which he asked,

"What’s the situation in the city now, and what’s your mission?"

A former Tiger Claw Gang member with the rank of Sergeant responded,

"Not good, all the Horizon Mercenaries in the city have perished, and it’s presumed that within a hundred-kilometer radius, the situation for Horizon Mercenaries is also dire. We are still able to move thanks to the nuclear bomb’s lower yield; otherwise, everything within a thousand kilometers would be doomed."

"There are still hundreds of POWs in the city; when we arrived, they had been disarmed by citizens and guerrillas. Some citizens are still confronting the camp guards to protect the mercenaries’ corpses, but the guards surrendered once we arrived."

When the local forces learned that the Europeans intended to nuke them, any remaining combat spirit utterly collapsed.

If it weren’t for the guerrillas and a large number of armed citizens confronting them, this group probably would have committed a massacre in the city.

"...Heh..."

Mann heard the statement and felt a pang of bitterness in his heart.

When he was in Honduras, the local villagers wanted to use knives against the mold, speaking of beauty with distaste. Have you ever seen such things before? Citizens protecting the army’s bodies, it’s like a science fiction novel.

"Someone has prioritized the removal of the mercenaries’ bodies already. Our task is to evacuate civilians, and now we fear we must add these POWs to the list."

The Sergeant finished speaking and returned Mann’s documents.

Mann and David heard about the mercenaries’ extermination in the city and felt a sharp pain in their hearts; these people did not retreat even in their final moments, and they fought to move the nuclear bomb away from the city.

They were true heroes, and their sacrifice must not be in vain.

"Our mission is to build defenses because the command is worried that the enemy might attack while we are preoccupied, and we must hold out at least until reinforcements arrive."

"When will the reinforcements arrive?"

"The earliest batch will be here in six hours, but it’s uncertain when the enemy will reach Da Haguai."

The Sergeant nodded solemnly and waved to the soldiers behind him,

"Proceed! Your company’s defense position is in the West district, supplies are on the way."

Mann’s team entered the city and quickly distributed assignments based on their company’s location.

Originally, David was supposed to follow his comrades to secure favorable terrain, but he was suddenly drawn towards a commotion from a group of young people on a nearby street.

Curious, he turned to find about a dozen youths arguing heatedly with a few soldiers at the street corner.

David approached them to understand what the quarrel was about.

"We want to stay and fight with you! Those bastards killed my sister, I want revenge!"

"Yes! I want to avenge Mr. Cole (Killer 42) and his people; they saved us all!"

These youths, not much older than David, shouted passionately, eager to join the battle, ignoring whatever the soldiers said, insisting on staying.

"Hey."

A voice halted their dispute, the youth turned to find another soldier they hadn’t seen before.

David stepped forward and spoke,

"Do you want to help?"

"Yes!"

The youths answered firmly and decisively.

"Do you know how to operate drones? Can you read manuals?"

"Do you understand tactical commands?"

"Do you know how to maintain your gun if it jams?"

David fired off a series of questions, to which the youths had no answers, yet were indignant and felt underestimated.

However, David continued,

"If you want to help, I know they are recruiting locals for the army in the rear, go register; we need you in our future battles."

Indeed, upon hearing about recruitment, the youths stopped arguing, eyes lighting up, obediently following the soldiers’ arrangement and withdrew from the frontlines.

Yet David didn’t feel happy; in these people, he saw his former self.

An ominous aura emanated from the grim reddish sky.

Combat arrived faster than expected.

In the second hour after Da Haguai’s nuclear explosion, Camaguey Republic launched an aggressive attack on the players from the Eastern front.

Two weeks ago, under pressure from the European Community, several medium and small military organizations on the Eastern front were forced to unite, continuously reinforcing the Eastern front and launching several minor attacks over two weeks to probe weaknesses in defenses, maintaining a confrontational friction between both sides.

After this nuclear explosion, under Olson’s strong orders, the Cuban drug cartel alliance was forced to gather a force of eight thousand troops to launch an offensive on the Eastern front positions.
