Chapter 281: Chapter 282 A Difference
SOPHIA’S POV
I stared at the envelope in my hands for a long time before opening it.
I didn’t recognize the seal pressed on the front but something about it made me uneasy. It looked official.
I sat alone at the kitchen table inside Sky Manor.
I received this letter a few minutes ago.
I opened the letter and read it. The first line made me freeze.
To Sophia Stone, Recognized Luna of the Stone Pack.
I blinked then I read it again and again. By the third time, my heart was beating so hard I could hear it in my ears.
I knew Damien came from a powerful pack family. I knew there were traditions and customs I never fully understood but Damien had never explained any of it to me.
Apparently, there was a high Lycan Council. I’d heard of it. I’d heard how powerful they were. I just never thought.....they really existed.
The letter continued for several pages.
It formally acknowledged the assaults committed against me. it even contained Helen’s attack, Declan’s involvement, the injuries I suffered, the miscarriage, the hospital incidents.
It contained everything. Every single thing.
My wolf remained quiet inside me.
My hands shook harder as I kept reading.
How did they know all this? How could they possibly know? Were they that powerful? Had they been watching me? Or was this a joke?
I had so many questions.
The details were precise, painfully precise. Even the dates matched.
I reached the final page and sat back in my chair.
My mind felt numb.
According to the letter, I possessed the right to file a formal grievance against members of the Stone Pack. A grievance that would trigger an official Council hearing.
It was a hearing powerful enough to affect the entire pack. It would be a hearing where every accusation would be investigated publicly and officially.
I swallowed hard.
Who exactly were these people?
I looked at the name signed at the bottom.
Lycan High Council.
The title alone sounded intimidating.
My stomach twisted.
I needed answers. There was only one person I trusted to explain this = to me.
I grabbed my phone and called Zade.
He answered before the first ring finished.
"Sophia?"
My wolf instantly calmed down as soon as she heard his voice.
The concern in his voice softened something inside me.
"Are you busy?" I asked.
"No."
The answer came so quickly that I miled.
"Can you come over?" I asked.
"I’m already leaving."
I blinked "What?"
"I’ll be there in ten minutes."
Then he hung up.
I stared at the phone with a huge smile on my face.
Only Zade would treat every request like an emergency.
Exactly nine minutes later, the front door opened.
I heard Patricia greeting him then footsteps.
A moment later, he entered the kitchen. His eyes immediately found me. The concern in them deepened.
"What happened?" he asked.
“Hey” I said softly.
I pushed the letter across the table.
He took it and began reading. As he read, his expression changed.
He didn’t look surprised. It seemed like he already knew about this council.
By the time he finished, he slowly exhaled.
"They contacted you." I asked.
I frowned "You knew about this?"
"Not really but I suspected they would. I’m glad they did"
I stared at him in shock.
He smiled as he pulled out a chair and sat beside me.
The kitchen suddenly felt smaller and warmer.
My wolf purred inside me.
"What exactly is the Lycan High Council?" I asked.
Zade folded his arms "They’re a very powerful council. The most powerful, in fact. They’re way above Alpha families."
I blinked "What?"
His expression remained serious.
"Every major pack answers to them."
I stared at him in shock.
Even now, that felt impossible. The Stone family controlled entire territories. People feared and respected them. That’s why they felt they could get away with anything. Yet someone existed above them?
"They can remove Alphas," Zade said.
I nearly dropped my cup.
"What?"
"They can sanction packs, freeze resources and strip authority. They can shut down a whole pack if they wanted to"
I stared at him in disbelief "They’re that powerful?"
"Much more powerful than you can imagine."
A chill moved through me.
I looked back down at the letter. Suddenly it seemed even more important.
I swallowed "And Elder Caine?"
"Elder Caine is one of the most respected members of the Council. Everyone fears him"
That answer surprised me.
The seriousness in his voice wasn’t exaggerated. He meant it.
"If Caine personally stepped in," Zade continued, "things are already much bigger than anyone in the Stone family realizes."
I leaned back slowly.
Everything felt unreal. Months ago, I was simply trying to survive my marriage.
Now powerful organizations I didn’t even know existed were sending me official letters.
Life truly made no sense.
My eyes dropped back to the page.
"The letter says I can file a grievance."
Zade nodded "Yes."
"What happens if I do?"
"If you file, there will be a hearing. Helen’s assault becomes official record. Declan’s attack becomes official record. Tiffany’s interference becomes official record. They’ll all be punished if they’re found guilty"
The kitchen fell silent. Even the air seemed heavier.
I looked directly at him "Publicly?"
"Publicly."
My chest tightened.
For so long, people had hidden everything. They’d covered things up and pretended nothing happened. They all pretended my suffering wasn’t real, as if my pain didn’t matter.
But this...this would force them to acknowledge it.
My thoughts became messy.
"What does filing this cost me?" I asked.
Zade didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he studied me carefully.
Finally, he spoke.
"It costs you the quiet exit." He said quietly "If you file, there won’t be any going back. You won’t be able to disappear quietly."
I understood immediately.
There would be no more hiding, no more staying silent.
"If you file," he said softly, "you’re stepping into the arena."
I looked at the letter again.
For months, I had tried to walk away peacefully.
I’d accepted humiliation, accepted blame and pain. I’d done everything possible to avoid conflict.
And what had it gotten me? A miscarriage, hospital beds, lies, physical attacks, public humiliation, a daughter who hated me.
My chest tightened.
I looked up directly into Zade’s eyes.
"Good." I said.
His eyebrows lifted
"I’m tired of being dragged and humiliated” I said.
Something changed in his expression. I could see the pride in his eyes. His expression showed that he respected my decision.
And somehow that mattered a lot.
Before either of us could speak again, another voice entered the room.
"Good answer."
I turned.
Marco stood in the doorway. Apparently he had heard everything.
He walked into the kitchen and sat beside me. He placed his hand over mine.
Marco squeezed my hand gently "Whatever you need, I got you"
My throat tightened instantly.
I looked down before tears could form.
My brother had always been this way. He’d always been reliable. He was always ready to fight for me.
For the first time in months... I didn’t feel alone. Not anymore.
I nodded "I should start writing."
Zade looked up. "The grievance?"
“Yes”
His expression softened, then he smiled.
"I’ll help if you need it." he said.
I smiled back "Thank you."
-
That evening, I carried my laptop into my room.
The letter sat beside me. The blank document glowed on the screen.
For several minutes, I couldn’t type anything.
Writing it made everything real - every injury, every betrayal, every humiliation, every loss.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Then, I started typing.
I typed one sentence, then another, then another. The words slowly began flowing.
By the time an hour passed, several pages had been completed.
I was describing the hospital incident when my phone rang.
Lance was calling.
I answered "Hello?"
"Sophia." He sighed "How are you feeling?"
I smiled weakly "Tired."
He chuckled "That sounds about right. You sound focused. Is something wrong?"
I hesitated. I didn’t know if I could tell him.
Lance had been there for me. He was someone I could trust.
I told him everything. I told him about the letter I received, the council, the grievance and the hearing.
When I finally finished, there was silence.
His response came immediately.
"I’ll help."
I blinked "Lance-"
"No." His voice remained calm and firm "I mean it."
"Lance..."
"I’ll call Professor Archer."
My eyes widened "What?"
"He knows people."
I sat up straighter.
"He has connections in several legal and academic circles." Lance continued speaking "I’ll make sure you have support."
The words hit me harder than they should have. My wolf purred happily inside me.
My chest ached with so many emotions. It felt good to know I had support.
I whispered "Thank you."
"Always."
Tears burned my eyes again. This time I didn’t fight them.
After the call ended, I sat quietly in my room.
The grievance remained open on my laptop. The Council letter remained beside me.
For the first time in a very long time, I wasn’t afraid of what came next.
Because whatever happened... I wasn’t facing it alone.
And that made all the difference.
