Chapter 37: Chapter 37 Sowers of Chaos

A young woman with pitch-black hair and non-descript features that were neither particularly beautiful nor ugly walked down a side alley from the busy main street of Yuson Prime. So well did she blend in that no one else seemed to pay her any mind even when looking directly at her.

Soon, she reached the outside of an ornate building that served as a high-end restaurant for the few that knew about and could afford it.

"I'm here for the Caos party." The woman said to the person manning the front of the restaurant.

The young man let out a surprised grunt and nearly jumped backwards when he heard the voice.

Despite having been looking at the entrance the entire time, he had not noticed her until she had addressed him.

Still, he was a professional and quickly composed himself.

After checking that she was indeed someone on the reservation list, he led her to a private backroom.

Already waiting inside was a middle-aged bald human man. Though he was neither tall nor particularly muscular, he gave off the air of someone dangerous. Like a snake that was coiled up and ready to strike at any moment.

When the woman sat down across from him, he turned towards the waiter that had escorted her, and with a pleasant smile ordered food for both of them.

Then, once the staff member was gone, she pressed down on the broach affixed to her jacket and all incoming and outgoing noise around them became muffled.

"Okay, we can speak without worry now. So, get to it. Why did you call me here? I've got my own sector to worry about."

"Oh, come now Camila, aren't we friends. Do I need a reason to invite you out for a nice dinner other than to enjoy you company." The man said, wearing a sardonic smile on his face.

At this, Camila stood up and was about to leave. She had no time for his games.

"Fine, fine, fine. You win. This has to do with that little business that we've been jointly working on. I figured I'd update you on all the little details, and there are a couple matters that I can't accomplish on my own without resorting to drastic measures."

With a deep sigh, Camila turned around and sat back down to hear out what her college had to say.

"Frist, our little arrangement with those pirates was mostly a success. Thanks to them, the Alliance is being forced to bring back the troops that recently left this system to shore up the border's defense. I've made sure to propagate news stories about their disappearance, and that because of the lessened security, the Yuson System became a target for outlaws. Public opinion has stated to sway in favor of what we want.""

"Obviously, that was one of the major goals of bringing those scum together here after I used them in other systems as means to elevate myself. Surely you have something else to tell me other than that, Adder."

"Of course, and congratulations on your promotion to deputy chief." Adder said, absolutely no true sincerity in his expression.

After that, he told her that some of the pirates that had been meant to escape got caught up in a surprise attack from one of the mercenaries at the last moment.

This caused several goods that were supposed to make their way to him to end up in police custody.

"I don't happen to have the connections to get them back without drawing attention to myself, but it should be easy enough for you to do, eh, deputy chief."

"I can't make any promises. My promotion is new after all, there are still some eyes on me. I'll do what I can, though not for you, but for our mission." Camila said, a disdainful gleam in her eyes as she accepted Adder's request.

Unfortunately, this was not the end of him brazenly trying to exploit the position she had recently obtained.

He also slid over a data pad to her and waited for her to read it.

"So, this is the mercenary that slightly disrupted our plan. Still, why bother me with this? He's just a single insignificant mercenary. That's hardly worth my time. Just hire an assassin if you want him dead."

Camila showed almost no interest in the subject that Adder had just handed to her. She might have harbored some negative emotions towards the unexpected variable that had turned what should have been a near perfect success into only an adequate one. But it was from enough for her to waste any energy on something so small in the grand scheme of things.

"If you would have just read the entirety of what I gave you, the relevance would have become apparent. The mercenary himself is of no consequence. Just some trash from the Yuson II colony that got his hands on an advanced vessel. One we failed to procure from Storren Crop. not too long ago."

Hearing this reignited Camila's interest, and she read through every bit of the report that Adder had given her.

"SCXD-011 has reappeared. So, what do you want me to do about it?" Camila said, looking more intent to work with Adder than she had since sitting down across from him.

"Well, as it turns out, our agent, along with the six other crew members that had been along for its first test flight in open space, were all found dead by the mercenary that located it. Now, the police downloaded logs that show he had nothing to do with the deaths, and that he legally found the spacecraft abandoned in space. But, with your position, that evidence could find itself distorted, or missing entirely. Perhaps the young man didn't 'luck' upon it, but had originally been a part of the plot, and only now came to gain his ill-gotten gains to make himself look innocent."

Adder continued to spin multiple narratives that would twist the facts to make Avery look guilty, and in turn, have him lose possession of his ship.

Normally, it would be impossible to do something like this, but if Camila was a bit heavy-handed and fabricated some evidence. it would be doable considering her position.

"Still, even if we are successful, SCXD-011 will likely just end up going back to Storren Corp., since it technically would be their property if the one that found it turns out to be a criminal involved in stealing it. Unlike the items the pirates had, this will be too high profile for me to make off with."

Nodding his head, Adder had to agree on this point.

Nevertheless, he was already formulating all manner of plans to obtain the cutting-edge vessel that evaded them once before.

"We could have some 'pirates' intercept on the way back to Storren Corp. Headquarters, or even hatch another plan to steal if from them. We've still got a few agents among the company's ranks. Just getting it away from the mercenary that currently has it will be enough to give us plenty of options."

Naturally, they could also go after Avery directly, but that came with its own risks. Using such a method increased the likelihood that their prize ending up destroyed in the attempt, or possibly even escaping.

"I'll see what I can do about both of these matters. And don't expect me to forget about this. You owe me at least two favors now." Camila said.

Not long after their discussion ended, the waiter came back in with their orders and placed the elaborate dishes utilizing expensive ingredients in front of the two people that had been scheming against the Alliance.
