Chapter 412: Chapter 411: A Constant Warning
Yan Feifan was happy to see that the two of them had reached a mutually beneficial agreement in just a few words.
Dr. Kevin Vega readily accepted Dr. Qiu Ge’s invitation to that evening’s symposium and also agreed to give a keynote presentation the next afternoon.
Naturally, Mr. Vega also got what he wanted.
Before dinner, Yan Feifan met with Lu Yao.
He had come to apologize on behalf of Zeng Ni.
Lu Yao explained with resignation that Zeng Ni was the only girl among their generation of cousins and was spoiled rotten, which was why she often acted so recklessly and without regard for the consequences.
He also said that Zeng Ni had been grounded and was on her way back to Jingcheng to face further discipline.
Yan Feifan wasn’t concerned about this so-called "discipline."
His only goal was to make the Lu Family aware of the situation.
"Um... I watched the surveillance video from that day again. The high-definition version."
With a complicated expression, Lu Yao said slowly, "This time, I watched it in slow motion. I watched very carefully."
"After I pushed you, your expression changed drastically."
He let out a long sigh and said with a hint of wistfulness, "That’s how I know that what you said to Zeng Ni was true."
Yan Feifan said earnestly, "Lu Yao, regardless of how I would have handled it, your first instinct was to save me. You acted immediately, and the outcome was good."
"That’s enough."
"Strictly speaking, I’m the one being petty by not being willing to truly acknowledge that you saved my life."
"That was wrong of me."
Lu Yao forced a smile. "I definitely wouldn’t call it saving your life..."
After a moment of silence, Lu Yao changed the subject. "I heard the medical technology company you invested in successfully raised capital."
"Congratulations!"
Yan Feifan replied politely, "Thanks. It was just a bit of luck. Whether it ultimately succeeds will depend on the market’s reaction once the product is launched."
After a few more moments of awkward small talk, Lu Yao took his leave.
After dinner, Yan Feifan went to the director’s office at the plastic surgery center. He buried himself in his work while waiting for midnight to arrive.
"Huh? Are you... writing math problems?"
The sudden voice pulled Yan Feifan out of his concentration.
He turned to see Wang Chuan, who had appeared beside him at some point, and explained, "They’re mock exam questions for Xiaoyu’s high school entrance exam."
"I’m trying my luck, predicting the questions."
"If her exam scores are too low, it would reflect poorly on me, wouldn’t it?"
Wang Chuan clicked his tongue. "You have that skill too? You can still remember everything from middle school?"
"Oh, right. I forgot you have a photographic memory."
Yan Feifan said with a hint of pride, "Director, tutoring middle and high school students has always been my strong suit."
"My tutoring income paid for my sister’s and my living and school expenses all through middle school, high school, and college."
Wang Chuan couldn’t help but ask, "Self-reliant at such a young age? Didn’t your parents or grandparents look after you?"
The moment the words left his mouth, Wang Chuan felt he had misspoken. "Feifan, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to bring up painful memories."
Yan Feifan said nonchalantly, "It’s fine. It’s been so many years. It’s all in the past now."
"After my father and mother divorced, they both started new families and had other children, so they naturally grew distant from us."
"Kids without parents have to grow up fast. My sister and I just did our best to take care of ourselves."
Hearing this, Wang Chuan felt a pang of sympathy for him.
Even though Yan Feifan spoke of it casually, Wang Chuan could imagine the hardships the two children must have faced, living cautiously without the protection of their parents.
He clapped Yan Feifan on the shoulder and said mysteriously, "Put those mock exams aside for now. Come on, I’ll show you something that’ll really open your eyes..."
Following Wang Chuan to a patient’s room on the seventh floor under the pretext of doing rounds, Yan Feifan finally understood what he meant by "something eye-opening."
It was an eighteen-year-old girl whose chest strained against her clothes as if she had two volleyballs stuffed under her shirt. They were incredibly eye-catching.
It was the first time Yan Feifan had seen a pair that large in person.
He visually estimated they must have weighed at least sixteen or seventeen pounds.
While having a large chest was something many women desired...
...being *too* large was a serious burden on the body, affecting balance and spinal development.
And many people, especially in China, don’t enjoy constantly being the center of attention and drawing stares.
He went along with Wang Chuan, perfunctorily asking a few questions before they left the room.
"She’s eighteen, the age when development typically stops."
Wang Chuan explained quietly, "Now that the college entrance exams are over, she’s thinking about getting breast reduction surgery before starting university. She wants to be a normal size and not be the center of attention because of them."
"Feifan, are you interested? I can ask Dr. Qiu Ming to let you take this surgery."
Hearing that she was the patient of Dr. Qiu Ming, the well-known cross-dresser, Yan Feifan quickly shook his head. "No, thanks. It’s not my specialty, and I wouldn’t want to take away his case."
Wang Chuan chuckled. "Feifan, Dr. Qiu’s skills are nearly on par with my own. The cross-dressing is just a hobby."
"Don’t be prejudiced against him. You two could exchange techniques and experiences."
Yan Feifan gave a noncommittal reply, "Maybe when I have time..."
The two of them returned to the office.
Wang Chuan’s voice turned grave. "Feifan, the surgery on that bride-to-be... it failed."
"How bad is it?" Yan Feifan asked, concerned.
Wang Chuan sighed softly. "Most of the repairs are acceptable, but there are obvious problems with the work done on the left corner of her mouth and the area above her right cheek."
"You can already see that her mouth is crooked and her facial muscles are distorted."
"As the muscle memory settles, the condition will become even more pronounced."
Yan Feifan said, "Oh," and asked, "What’s the plan? Have the two sides agreed on compensation?"
Wang Chuan shook his head. "She’s still in the post-op recovery period. That guy Tang Zheng is still keeping her in the dark, trying to convince her that as the incisions heal, things will gradually improve and she’ll get the results she wanted."
Yan Feifan asked, "Director, if this all blows up, what’s the likely outcome?"
Wang Chuan said quietly, "Any surgery carries the risk of complications. That’s why the consent forms signed before an operation all have liability waivers."
"Even if they go to court, Zhiyin won’t face severe penalties, but its reputation will definitely take a huge hit."
"Usually, the two parties will reach a private settlement, and the patient will receive some form of compensation."
"If the bride-to-be makes an exorbitant demand that’s more than Zhiyin can afford, then their only option will be to go to court."
As Yan Feifan remained silent, he heard Wang Chuan continue worriedly, "If she really does make an exorbitant demand, that’s actually the better scenario. We can just negotiate slowly."
"What I’m worried about is that her fiancé will break up with her over this. Between that and the disfigurement, she might not be able to see a way out and do something drastic."
"For now, we can only take things one step at a time."
Wang Chuan added, frustrated with the man’s incompetence, "I just hope Tang Zheng learns his lesson from this and stops relying on sheer luck."
He then turned to Yan Feifan and cautioned, "And that goes for you, too. Never, ever take a risk you don’t have to."
Wang Chuan’s tone grew sterner. "Especially you. You’ve always been overconfident and daring."
"Feifan, we’re doctors. When we make a mistake, the patient pays the price with their health, or even their life."
Yan Feifan defended himself, "Director, I’m always meticulous in my work. I only proceed when I’m absolutely certain of the outcome."
"What you call ’risks’ are just emergency decisions I have to make when there are no other options."
Wang Chuan grunted. "It’s always good to have a reminder..."
At eleven o’clock that night, Yan Feifan and Wang Chuan were waiting when Ah Yimu arrived.
She was right on time, not late at all.
