Chapter 410: Chapter 409: Help Me Get Even
The young nurse’s actions left Yan Feifan dumbfounded.
For years, he had either been studying at school or working in a hospital. His life experience was relatively limited. He’d never encountered anything like this before.
When Yan Feifan saw the young nurse forcefully yank out another lock of her hair, the roots still attached to a small, bloody piece of scalp, his own scalp tingled. He was horrified.
He ducked behind a bunk bed and shouted, "What are you doing? If you need something or have a request, just say it!"
"There’s no need for this, really."
The young nurse’s eyes were already brimming with tears. It was hard to tell if it was from the pain or just part of her performance.
She spoke through sobs, "If I don’t do this, how could I get you to agree, Dr. Yan?"
"How do you know I won’t agree if you don’t even try? I’m a very approachable person. Please, don’t do anything foolish!"
’A wise man doesn’t court disaster.’ Yan Feifan decided to placate her with words first and get out of this unnerving situation.
"You’ll really agree?" The young nurse froze.
Yan Feifan suddenly felt this young nurse was a bit dense.
He nodded quickly. "You came to me because you’re seeking medical treatment for yourself or a loved one, right?"
"A doctor’s heart is like a parent’s. I’ve always been a soft touch; I can’t stand to see people begging in desperation."
"It’s just that... what you’re doing right now is honestly scaring me a little."
The young nurse glanced at the bloody welt on her chest, then at the lock of blood-matted hair in her hand, and burst into tears with a loud WAIL.
"SOB... SOB... My mom... she has a spinal tumor."
"SOB... My mom raised me all by herself. I can’t lose her."
"I went and begged Dr. Lo, but he said the waiting list is too long. My mom’s condition is too urgent, she can’t wait."
"SOB... No matter how much I begged, he wouldn’t agree."
"I was out of options, and someone gave me this idea..."
With a tear-streaked face, the young nurse looked at Yan Feifan and pleaded, "Dr. Yan, I only did this because I was truly out of options."
"Dr. Yan, can you still agree to help me?"
She quickly added, "Dr. Yan, as long as you promise to save my mom, I’ll do anything for you."
"Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do it. Anything at all."
The young nurse added pointedly, "Even *that*."
’Hmph.’ Yan Feifan pursed his lips. ’You’re cute enough, I guess, but you’re nothing compared to my Su Ye.’
’It’s just that with Mr. Yu’s diagnosis and my sister’s constant supervision, all I can do is look, not touch.’
Yan Feifan knew he couldn’t provoke the young nurse right now. He nodded hastily. "I promise, I promise. And you don’t have to do a thing."
A flash of joy crossed the young nurse’s face, but she quickly caught herself.
She asked suspiciously, "Dr. Yan, you’re not just humoring me, are you? You’re not going to go back on your word as soon as you leave?"
Just as Yan Feifan was about to assure her he wouldn’t, the young nurse said, "Things have already gone this far. I have to get some insurance first."
The young nurse pulled a small GoPro camera from her pocket. She set it on the lower bunk on the left side of the room, aiming the lens directly at the bunk bed on the right.
"Dr. Yan, let’s do *it* first."
The young nurse then threatened, "If you don’t, I’ll scream that you’re trying to assault me."
"Given the situation, I doubt the police will believe you!"
At these words, Yan Feifan’s expression darkened.
The young nurse’s actions had crossed a line for Yan Feifan.
He suddenly realized something.
The young nurse was a petite girl, maybe 5’2" with a slender build.
’And I’m a man of about 5’10".’
’I might not be a bodybuilder, but I’ve been working out for the past few months. I’m strong enough.’
’Most importantly, I’m a doctor—a very good one.’
’I know exactly which parts of the body to strike to make someone lose their ability to resist from intense pain, or to knock them out quickly.’
’As a surgeon, my hands and feet are extremely agile...’
No sooner said than done. After quickly running through several scenarios for subduing her in his mind, the look in Yan Feifan’s eyes changed as he looked at the nurse.
Just then, a KNOCK KNOCK came from the door.
At the same time, a voice carried in from outside.
"The police won’t believe you. I heard everything, and I recorded it on my phone. I can be a witness for Dr. Yan."
"Open the door!"
Yan Feifan recognized the voice. It was that silver-haired weirdo, Zeng Ni.
Hearing this voice, the young nurse collapsed to the floor and burst into tears, completely breaking down.
"WAAAAH... I really had no choice..."
"WAAAAH... Dr. Yan, please, save my mom..."
Yan Feifan started to walk past the young nurse, but she grabbed his leg. "WAAAAH... Dr. Yan, please..."
Yan Feifan dragged her with him to the door and unlocked it.
Zeng Ni, who was standing outside, first gave Yan Feifan a concerned look-over, then crouched down to the sobbing nurse. "Stop crying."
"I heard everything about your situation."
"Sigh, I’m just too soft-hearted. I can’t stand to see people cry. I’ll help you."
The young nurse stopped crying and asked suspiciously, "How can you help me? Can you make decisions on Dr. Yan’s behalf?"
Zeng Ni chuckled. "Heh. My family has close ties to Jingcheng Bai Ning Hospital. I can pull some strings and get your mother moved to the front of the line."
"Really?" The young nurse’s face was a mixture of shock and disbelief.
Zeng Ni snorted. "In a situation like this, do you have any other choice but to trust me?"
"I believe you! I believe you!"
The young nurse nodded quickly, then said in a choked voice, "Miss... Miss... Baining Hospital is very expensive."
"My mom doesn’t have insurance, and my family doesn’t have that kind of money... WAAAAH..."
Zeng Ni said with a look of disgust, "Stop wailing."
"I might as well go all the way. Fine. I’ll pay for your mother’s surgery, too."
Seeing the young nurse about to speak again, Zeng Ni waved her hand dismissively. "Alright, alright, don’t bother with the thank yous."
"What can I say? I’m just a softie who can’t stand to see people in misery."
"Just take down my phone number..."
After giving the nurse her number and dismissing her with a few quick words, Zeng Ni turned to Yan Feifan, who had been watching coldly from the sidelines.
She flashed a brilliant smile. "Well, Dr. Yan, I just solved a huge problem for you, didn’t I?"
"A child raised by a single mother has a very deep bond with her."
"If she hadn’t gotten what she wanted this time, who knows what extreme thing she might have done next."
"Wouldn’t you agree, Dr. Yan?"
Zeng Ni added smugly, "And by arranging her mother’s treatment through Baining Hospital, you won’t be affected here at the Affiliated Hospital at all."
Yan Feifan said coldly, "Zeng Ni, just spit it out. What do you want in return?"
Zeng Ni put on an embarrassed expression. "Oh, Dr. Yan, I was just helping that poor girl out. My sympathy got the better of me. I just can’t stand to see people suffer."
Pausing for a moment and noticing that Yan Feifan’s expression remained cold and impassive, she changed her tune. "But... if you really want to thank me, Dr. Yan, you *could* do me a small favor."
"I got screwed over by someone a while back. You could help me get even, Dr. Yan."
Zeng Ni continued enthusiastically, "With your photographic memory, it would be easy for you..."
"Zeng Ni, do you take me for a fool?"
Yan Feifan couldn’t take it anymore and cut her off bluntly. "You and that fake nurse put on this whole act together, and you really thought I wouldn’t see through it?"
Zeng Ni’s expression changed instantly. She demanded loudly, her voice filled with indignation, "Yan Feifan, what is that supposed to mean?"
"What does it mean?"
Yan Feifan pointed to his own eyes. "Let me tell you something, Zeng Ni. I don’t just have a photographic memory."
"My powers of observation are also extremely sharp."
"And I have to say, your acting is terrible. Not even a third as good as the fake nurse’s."
"The micro-expressions on your face told me you two knew each other from the start."
"And another thing..."
Yan Feifan said with utter disdain, "’My sympathy got the better of me? I can’t stand to see people suffer?’ Coming from a rich kid like you, not even a three-year-old would believe that."
With that said, he didn’t spare Zeng Ni another glance and simply walked away...
