Chapter 389: Chapter 388: Unwritten Rules
Yan Feifan didn’t exactly loathe Lu Yao, but he certainly didn’t like him.
He was, of course, willing to repay this so-called favor.
Yan Feifan told Lu Yao to email him the person’s medical records, and he would give a concrete answer after reviewing them.
Having achieved his goal, Lu Yao knew it was time to leave. He gave Yu Suye a long, hard look before quietly exiting the private room.
Once the door to the room was closed, Yan Ziruo sighed softly. "That look of longing in his eyes... I suddenly feel a little sorry for him."
"Feifan, I think you went a little too far."
Yu Suye came to his defense. "Sis, I don’t think it was too far at all."
"Feifan said it well: if a door is unwilling to open for you, it’s rude to keep knocking."
"The sooner Lu Yao gives up on this, the sooner he can have a fresh start."
Yan Feifan, not wanting to continue the topic, urged, "Let’s just eat."
"After we eat, you all can wander around the hospital or nearby. Once I finish my afternoon surgery, we’ll head back to Binhai together..."
It was just past two in the afternoon when Yan Feifan completed his third puncture and injection surgery of the day.
As he walked out of the surgical area, he was invited into the office of Yu Youhai, the vice president of Baining Hospital.
Yu Youlian of Baining Medical Technology was also waiting in the office.
After the men exchanged pleasantries, sat down, and were served tea, Yu Youhai got straight to the point. "Mr. Yan, neurosurgery experts from all over the country are greatly looking forward to the seminar in August."
"The number of applicants we’ve recently confirmed with Mr. Lo has already surpassed one hundred and fifty."
Yan Feifan said with a hint of pride, "I’m also a little surprised the seminar is getting so much attention."
Yu Youhai chuckled. "It’s mainly because the effects of your puncture and injection technique are so remarkable. Every neurosurgery expert wants to personally witness these miraculous results."
"Mr. Yan, it’s like this..."
Yu Youhai took a sip of his tea before continuing, "Based on our and Mr. Lo’s projections, the number of attendees will definitely exceed two hundred, and it’s possible it could even pass three hundred."
"Not only does a seminar with that many people become much more difficult to organize, but the effectiveness of the live observation and discussion sessions will also be very poor."
When it came to the specific organizational details of the seminar, Yan Feifan was completely hands-off and didn’t participate in any of it.
He asked directly, "Mr. Yu, do you have a proposal?"
"Hold two seminars!"
Yu Youhai elaborated, "Baining Hospital and the Affiliated Hospital, one in the south and one in the north, could hold separate seminars at different times. Applicants could then attend whichever is closer."
Yu Youlian added, "Alternatively, one seminar could target general neurosurgery, and the other, cranial surgery."
"Mr. Yan, if you have two or three hundred people gathered together, it’ll be chaotic. If everyone spoke for just five minutes, you’d run out of time in a single day."
’Too many people. That’s definitely a problem that needs attention.’
Yan Feifan mulled it over for a moment before saying, "Mr. Yu, Mr. Yu, I’m not involved in the specific organizational work for this seminar."
"Why don’t you discuss this with Mr. Lo? Whatever you decide, I have no objection."
Yu Youhai and Yu Youlian exchanged a glance, and the former chuckled. "Mr. Yan, with you saying that, we can rest easy."
After a brief pause, Yu Youhai smiled again. "Chuan Bai once mentioned the medical technology company you’ve invested in and established."
"For the financing, the two of us are willing to personally invest ten million each."
Yu Youhai quickly added, "Don’t worry, Mr. Yan. Chuan Bai didn’t leak any of your product secrets."
"We made this decision primarily out of our trust in you."
Yu Youlian took over the conversation, explaining, "And also because of that fellow Chuan Bai’s performance."
"We know him quite well, and in all these years, we’ve never seen him so passionate about doing something."
Yu Youlian sighed. "It shows that leaving the family business to strike out on his own was the right decision. It also shows his belief in your company and his confidence in its future."
"Having you and Chuan Bai is enough for us to make our judgment."
Yan Feifan said politely, "Thank you for your vote of confidence."
"Sometime next week, you should be able to see the detailed product introduction and financing plan."
He then remembered something else and asked, "Mr. Yu, are there any new developments regarding Baining Hospital building a branch campus?"
The question made Yu Youhai instinctively rub the bridge of his nose.
"There are still some people who are firmly opposed, but it’s the inevitable trend. Making this decision is just a matter of time."
"Several cities have already caught wind of it and have specifically sent people to get in touch with us."
"However, our primary targets are still first-tier cities like Binhai, Guangshen, and Chongcheng."
Yu Youhai smiled again. "And now that your Mr. Liu has been fortunately promoted to President of the Affiliated Hospital, the possibility of us choosing Binhai has increased quite a bit..."
Next, the three of them talked for a while about intelligent surgical robots.
Yu Youlian stated that the surgical robot would make its debut at the upcoming seminar, where it would give an exciting demonstration.
The entire R&D team was now working overtime, day and night, to ensure the demonstration would be flawless...
At 3:10 in the afternoon, Yan Feifan, Yan Ziruo, Yu Suye, and Song Yi left Baining Hospital and began their journey home.
「Meanwhile」
At Binhai University Affiliated Hospital, Wang Chuan was also receiving a guest.
Dr. Ling Weidong, the vice president of Huarong Medical Beauty.
This man was about the same age as Wang Chuan but half a head taller. He looked quite sturdy, with a rugged, square face.
His appearance made it hard to believe he was a renowned plastic surgeon in the industry; he looked more like an orthopedic surgeon.
Having just finished a surgery, Wang Chuan invited Dr. Ling Weidong into his office.
Once they were seated as host and guest, Wang Chuan spoke with a smile. "Mr. Ling, coming to see me during the busiest time on a weekend, I doubt you came just for a friendly chat, did you?"
Ling Weidong gave a cold laugh. "You’re the one who’s busy on weekends, not me. In a little while, I’ll be so free I could take a long vacation."
Hearing the veiled meaning and resentment in his words, Wang Chuan just smiled faintly and sipped his tea.
Ling Weidong waited a moment, but seeing that the other man wasn’t taking the bait and asking, he couldn’t hold back any longer.
"Mr. Wang, although there’s competition between us, it’s always been healthy competition. We even cooperate occasionally."
"But having your plastic surgery patients deliberately spread rumors, telling everyone that Huarong Medical Beauty is inferior to you—that’s going too far."
He stressed heavily, "Way too far!"
Wang Chuan put down his teacup and said unhurriedly, "Mr. Ling, that’s a rather serious accusation."
"Do you have concrete evidence?"
"You want evidence? Of course, I have it!"
Ling Weidong took a tablet out of his briefcase, tapped on it a few times, and pulled up several photos.
"These two women—don’t you dare tell me they haven’t had plastic surgery at your hospital!"
Wang Chuan took the tablet and looked.
He actually recognized the two women on the screen.
They were both Yan Feifan’s patients. One was Li Mei, whose features were perfect yet somehow disharmonious.
The other was Yang Susu, whose smile had once looked worse than a grimace.
Ling Weidong continued his accusation, "These two women, on the internet, at friendly gatherings, and in various other settings, have repeatedly denigrated and disparaged our Huarong, while singing your praises again and again."
"Mr. Wang, what exactly did you give them to do this?"
Wang Chuan smiled faintly and handed the tablet back to him.
"Mr. Ling, the only ’benefit’ we gave them was making them more beautiful."
"When patients share their personal experiences and opinions, that’s word-of-mouth. It’s not something you can buy with money."
Ling Weidong snorted. "Mr. Wang, I refuse to believe you can’t see that both of these women previously had surgery at our Huarong."
"Mr. Wang, your hospital also has patients whose surgeries have failed or not met expectations."
"What if we also found such people, made them more beautiful, and had them go around telling everyone how bad you are?"
"How would you feel then?"
Ling Weidong said in a low voice, "Mr. Wang, by doing this, you’ve broken the unwritten rule between us."
This unwritten rule stipulated that the country’s major, equally-matched medical beauty and plastic surgery institutions would not take on patients from a competitor’s failed surgeries.
First, revision surgeries on such patients are extremely difficult, and the chances of success are very low.
Second, if the revision surgery were successful, it would offend the original clinic.
Third, to evade responsibility, medical beauty clinics will, in most cases, give the failed patient a long-winded explanation about unavoidable complications.
But then, that same patient has a successful revision surgery at your institution.
The patient would then likely turn around and pursue legal action against the original clinic for their failure.
All these lawsuits going back and forth would make life difficult for every medical beauty clinic.
Yan Feifan, being a newcomer, knew nothing of these unspoken industry rules; he just saw them as challenging cases and took them on.
As for Wang Chuan, who did know about them, as long as it helped Yan Feifan improve his technical skills, he couldn’t have been happier for him to take on more of these highly difficult plastic surgeries.
Only now, the other party had come knocking on his door.
Wang Chuan could only say vaguely, "Mr. Ling, my student took on these two cases. He doesn’t understand these things, and by the time I found out, it was already too late."
"Something like this won’t happen again..."
