Chapter 565: Chapter 565: Do I Have No Chance?
Preston Vance never imagined she would say something like that. He froze on the spot, looking at her, momentarily at a loss.
"Chloe..."
He opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but when he met her cold gaze, it was as if his throat had closed up, and he couldn’t get a single word out.
A light breeze blew past, and Preston Vance actually felt a chill.
Chloe Reed watched him calmly. The moment she finished speaking, she turned to leave.
"Chloe."
Preston Vance’s voice, trembling slightly, came from behind her. "What happened before was my fault. I didn’t realize... but I was framed. You can’t just write me off because of this..."
He walked toward her, step by step, his voice low and hoarse. The look in his eyes was now tinged with sadness and desolation.
He felt deeply unsettled being rejected like this.
Chloe Reed stopped and turned to face him. "Preston, maybe we aren’t suited to be friends."
"But I think we have a relaxed, happy time when we’re together," Preston Vance said, gazing at her earnestly. "Or is it that Walker Grant told you not to contact me?"
"It has nothing to do with him," Chloe Reed said, looking at him. "It’s just... I’ve finally found some stability in my life, and I don’t want to go through that kind of turmoil again."
A desolate air clung to Preston Vance. "Chloe, do I not have a single chance?"
Looking at his crestfallen expression, Chloe Reed was momentarily at a loss for words.
’He always makes me feel like I’m the one breaking his heart.’
’But we’re just friends.’
Chloe Reed’s expression was complicated. She pursed her lips and looked at him. "Preston, thank you for all your concern in the past. I have to go, I have things to do."
She didn’t linger.
’I can’t afford any more accidents. I need to build myself up and confront Vera Holloway head-on.’
’I will get my revenge.’
’My goals are clear. I need to resolve the questions about my origins. Once it’s all over, I’ll divorce Walker Grant and choose a different path in life.’
’I’m actually looking forward to that future.’
’As long as nothing unexpected happens in the meantime.’
Preston Vance watched her back as she walked away, his hands balling into tight fists at his sides.
’She rejected me just like that, without a hint of hesitation.’
’So in the end, she still chose Walker Grant, didn’t she?’
"..."
Chloe Reed walked right out of the residential complex and saw Walker Grant’s tall, imposing figure standing by the car. A cigarette was pinched between his fingers, faint smoke curling into the air.
’Why did he look so desolate and lonely?’
Chloe Reed’s expression faltered for a moment before she walked toward him.
He looked up, his dark eyes quivering slightly as he asked in a slow voice, "What did he say to you?"
Chloe Reed shook her head. "Nothing much."
Then she opened the car door and got in.
She reached over to grab the seatbelt, but he suddenly leaned in close, took the belt from her, and fastened it himself.
Even after it clicked, he didn’t pull back, continuing to stare at her from point-blank range.
Chloe Reed’s long lashes fluttered. ’This is too close.’
"What do you think you’re doing?"
She leaned back, her body tensing as she tried to put some distance between them.
Walker Grant, however, stared at her intently. "Why won’t you tell me? Do the two of you have secrets now?"
Hearing this, Chloe Reed raised an eyebrow. "That doesn’t seem to have anything to do with you, does it? We’re on the verge of divorce, remember?"
