Chapter 530: Chapter 530: A Stingy Man
Now that he was dead, the past seemed to have died with him.
Suddenly, Chloe didn’t know if she should keep on hating him.
A hand suddenly waved in front of her eyes. She snapped out of it to see Claire Monroe smiling warmly at her.
"What’s on your mind? You seem so lost in thought."
Chloe lowered her gaze, her long lashes fluttering. "He put me in danger so many times," she said. "But in the beginning, we were friends."
Claire blinked. "He’s dead. Are you sad?"
"I’m just wondering what Vera Holloway did to make him so utterly devoted to her." Chloe’s hand at her side clenched into a fist.
Claire patted her shoulder. "Whatever the reason, the fact is he hurt you time and again. You have no reason to be sad. He deserved to die; he got what was coming to him. The moment he decided to kill you, you should have known that you two stopped being friends a long time ago."
Chloe’s breath hitched. She looked up at her and slowly nodded. "Yes, you’re right."
Claire’s lips curved into a smile. "Don’t get caught up in pointless emotions. They’ll only cloud your judgment and make you indecisive. What you need to do now is shut down your feelings and make yourself stronger. After all, your enemies are the Vances."
"Claire Monroe."
Just then, Walker Grant’s voice cut in, tinged with a distinct chill. "Don’t give her bad ideas."
But Claire countered, "Am I wrong?"
Walker strode over and stood in front of Chloe. "She shouldn’t be moping over Miles Hawthorne, that’s true," he said evenly. "But she can’t just shut off her feelings. She’s only human."
"Ha..."
Claire burst out laughing, a mocking smile playing on her lips as she looked at him. "You’re just scared that if she shuts down her emotions, she’ll care about you even less. Right?"
Walker’s eyes grew cold.
"Hah, looks like I hit a nerve," Claire said, clearly enjoying herself. "You’re so anxious and afraid now. What were you thinking back then?"
Walker’s gaze grew even colder. "The rest of your payment," he said in a low, dangerous voice, "you don’t want it anymore?"
The smile on Claire’s face froze. She crossed her arms. "Walker Grant, that’s a low blow. Don’t threaten me with money. I don’t like it."
But Walker said, "Then watch what you say. And stop giving people unsolicited advice."
"Hmph!"
Claire scoffed, turned, and walked away.
Even from a distance, they could hear her mutter, "What a petty man."
Walker was left speechless.
He suddenly regretted letting Chloe meet Claire.
’She’s a ticking time bomb!’
’What if Claire becomes a bad influence on her?’
He turned to look at her, only to find her staring at him with a strange expression.
Walker’s heart skipped a beat, but he kept his expression calm. "What is it?" he asked.
"What’s the point of going after her? I don’t like you anymore, remember?"
Walker fell silent.
’She really knew how to twist the knife.’
Chloe changed the subject. "What are your plans for Miles Hawthorne?"
"I’ll hand him over to the Hawthornes," Walker said calmly.
She looked at him. "Aren’t you afraid the Hawthornes will come after you?"
"Miles Hawthorne died of a sudden illness. What does that have to do with me?" Walker replied nonchalantly, but a deadly chill flashed in the depths of his dark eyes.
’For Miles Hawthorne to die just like that... he got off too easy.’
’He tried to kill Chloe time and time again. He should have been kept alive, forced to suffer a fate worse than death.’
